Venceslas I, Duke of Luxembourg (also called Venceslas of Bohemia in chronicles ) was born in Prague Feb. 25, 1337 as the only son of the second marriage of King of Bohemia Jean I Luxembourg (1296-1346) Beatrice Bourbon ( 1318-1383 ) and he died in Luxembourg castle 8 December 1383 He was buried in a tomb in the middle of the choir of the old church of abbey of Orval [1]
He became the first Duke of Luxembourg, March 13, 1354 , and the rest until his death in 1383. Venceslas is Duke of Brabant and Limburg 1355-1383 , Antwerp Marquis and Lord of Mechelen. Venceslas died without issue of his wife, Joanna, Duchess of Brabant , but there were three natural sons , which are knights and lords and bear the coat of arms of the Dukes of Brabant [2]
According to the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy , Venceslas had four sons (bastards) :
  1. Gilles , bastard of Luxembourg (1374/1404) , lord of the Tower -devant-Virton and Saulmoury , because of his wife, Governor of Aspremont . It is the second husband ( 1374-1376 ) Clémence de Luxembourg, Josse widow of Aspremont , Lord of Saulmoury and Tower -devant- Virton, daughter of Raoul bastard of Luxembourg and his wife Sophie of Chasteler .
  2. Guillaume , Luxembourg bastard , bailiff of Hannut in 1405 .
  3. Jean bastard de Luxembourg, marries before March 7, 1405 to Mary Mennens .
  4. Charles , bastard of Luxembourg marries after 1411 to Johanna van der Spout , daughter of Bernardus van der Spout and his wife Margareta van der Hulpen , bastard of Brabant. [3]
But according the Bulletin of the Belgian Royal Geographical Society , he also had another natural son [4] :
  1. Godfrey of Brabant,
In 1383 Venceslas , ill, moved to Luxembourg where he died in December of the same year. His wife Jeanne stays in Brussels. Knowing that his days are numbered , Venceslas requests that after his death his heart is sent to Jeanne as evidence of the fidelity of his love. This is the last act of this chivalrous poet prince. Venceslaus died of the plague or leprosy in Luxembourg in 1383. He is buried in a mausoleum located in the middle of the choir of the abbey church of Cistercians of Orval .
His death breaks the union of the two duchies and Brabant continues to be ruled by Jeanne de Brabant . The Duchess Jeanne survives Venceslas until December 1, 1406.[5]
