We’ll Take Manhattan explores the explosive love affair between sixties supermodel Jean Shrimpton and photographer David Bailey. Focusing on a wild and unpredictable 1962 Vogue photo shoot in New York, the drama brings to life the story of two young people falling in love, misbehaving and inadvertently defining the style of the Sixties along the way.

Well made despite its TV movie restrictions and the subjects of legendary fashion photographer David Bailey and his muse Jean Shrimpton are biopic-worthy enough, but I couldn't shake the feeling that Karen Gillan underplayed her part and Aneurin Barnard overdid his.
Everyone in it was completely blown away by the wonderful and tragically now late Helen McCrory. What an actress she was.

Kind of a drag in parts but I like the two leads, and the costuming and cinematography is quite nice.

the chemistry, the fashion, the struggles, the loud-mouthed, blunt, and stubborn but handsome photographer. the instant attraction to the picturesque model. the natural poses. the angles he took. the arguments they had. the script. i laughed. i smiled. i grinned. warm and bubbly. warm and bubbly.
i love it.
I shan't ever tire of watching this charming homegrown BBC4 biopic of Bailey and Shrimpton.
Gillan's Shrimp is a thing of gauche delight, whilst Barnard portrays Bailey by way of channelling something of David Hemmings in Blow Up.
Great supporting from Helen McCrory and, in spit and cough roles, Anna Chancellor, Robert Glenister, Alex Jennings and Natasha Little.
It's great but it's not perfect; a tighter script might have reined in some of the more languid pacing issues but, like Jean herself and the Bailey photographs, it is beautiful. The jazz soundtrack is wonderful too, effortlessly capturing that era.

While this was an average made-for-TV type biopic, it does a decent job of heralding the combative early days of 60s fashion, telling the story of photographer David Bailey and supermodel Jean Shrimpton's famous NYC photo shoot for British Vogue. Bailey and Shrimpton were edgy avante garde bohemians, threatening to the elitist snobs who ran British Vogue, in particular to one Lady Clare Rendlesham, head fashion editor and a real nasty piece of work, according to the movie.
