War on Peace: The End of Diplomacy and the Decline of American Influence Rilegatura all'americana – Stampa grande, 9 gennaio 2019

A harrowing exploration of the collapse of American diplomacy and the abdication of global leadership, by the winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service.

US foreign policy is undergoing a dire transformation, forever changing America's place in the world. Institutions of diplomacy and development are bleeding out after deep budget cuts; the diplomats who make America's deals and protect its citizens around the world are walking out in droves. Offices across the State Department sit empty, while abroad the military-industrial complex has assumed the work once undertaken by peacemakers. We're becoming a nation that shoots first and asks questions later.

In an astonishing journey from the corridors of power in Washington, DC, to some of the most remote and dangerous places on earth?Afghanistan, Somalia, and North Korea among them?acclaimed investigative journalist Ronan Farrow illuminates one of the most consequential and poorly understood changes in American history. His firsthand experience as a former State Department official affords a personal look at some of the last standard bearers of traditional statecraft, including Richard Holbrooke, who made peace in Bosnia and died while trying to do so in Afghanistan.

Drawing on newly unearthed documents, and richly informed by rare interviews with warlords, whistle-blowers, and policymakers?including every living former secretary of state from Henry Kissinger to Hillary Clinton to Rex Tillerson?War on Peace makes a powerful case for an endangered profession. Diplomacy, Farrow argues, has declined after decades of political cowardice, shortsightedness, and outright malice?but it may just offer America a way out of a world at war.

5,0 su 5 stelle Fascinating & alarming...
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 17 febbraio 2019
The work of diplomatic personnel is of necessity largely hidden from public view, unless & until things either go spectacularly right, or spectacularly wrong. However, no one who is even vaguely aware of history could be unaware that the work is essential in times of conflict, but more so in times of stability, for that is when relationships can be established & trust built ready to be activated in a crisis. In other words, there is never a time when their services are not crucial to good world order. Excellent work by the author in illuminating history, & warning of a present/future with military solutions as a substitute for diplomacy.

An amazing read. If I were to sum up this book in a line it would be; What happens when foreign policy is dictated by the Military and not by Diplomats.

5,0 su 5 stelle What's the future of the US diplomacy?
Recensito in Francia il 12 settembre 2018
Excellent book, really enjoyed reading. Every day, I couldn't wait to go back to it. Mr Farrow's writing is funny but he doesn't lose his perspective. If you think you knew how the US diplomacy was handled, read it , you surely learn something new.

5,0 su 5 stelle What I really liked about this insightful
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 13 giugno 2018
What I really liked about this insightful, non partisan and thoughtful book, was that he knew a lot of the players and they trusted him with frank opinions that added depth to his analysis.

A sobering reminder that the Democratic process is in high jeopardy and the world is no longer in safe hands.
