Walton Goggins gives a low key amazing performance in “The Hateful 8”.
I know many don’t consider this film among QT’s best work, but it certainly grows on you after a couple watches. Goggins “Chris Mannix” character is so damn unlikeable through much of the movie, but he may be the most fun character to watch. He ends up gaining some redemption for siding with Major Warren at the end (though it was only because he almost drank the poisoned coffee). I think he proved he is capable of playing a very compelling anti-hero.
Edit: Goggins gives a transcendent performance. Which was my reason for posting. My terminology “low key” seems to have bothered some. I Wanted to give this great actor some praise. Please don’t take my wording as a slight against him. I’m glad that so many others appreciate him. I’m late to the party, but I can’t wait to check out Justified.
“Truth always sounds like lies to a sinner.”
-Boyd Crowder, Justified
Walton crushed this role, was good in The Shield too
"I've been accused of being a lot of things...inarticulate ain't one of them." - Boyd Crowder
The dialogue in Justified is basically backwoods Shakespeare.
“Now I may not know a lot about a lot of things, but I do know how to blow shit up”
"What I need is a $6 blowjob. A smarter move I cannot imagine." Dewey Crowe
The only recent TV show with better dialogue, and this might not even be a fair comparison, is season one of True Detective with Matthew McConahay and Woody Harrelson. That was only 6 episodes and that story line only ran for one season so it's not the same as what Justified did.
For an ongoing series with a variety of characters, I think Justified and Pinky Blinders are two series that are so far beyond the competition that it is almost embarrassing for everyone else.
I think Breaking Bad had a great plot and great characters and solid dialogue but not on that level.
I would have to go back and watch The Sopranos or The Wire to see how they stack up, but off the cuff none of those strike me as having the level of dialogue these shows had.
Agreed. TD Season 1 is nextlevel
I love Justified but you can't say The Wire doesn't compare. The Wire has probably the best dialogue in television because every character sounds special and real at the same time. They all have their own expressions, accents, and rythms, some seem witty, some seem slow. Justified is a great show, however nobody's that articulate all the time. It's immensely entertaining but it's not as rich.
Mad Men, at it's best, is on the same level.
"I don't think about you at all."
No one else could have done Boyd Crowder justice. He was the best character in that show and it's not even close
Ironic that originally they had only planned on him being in the first episode.
He has always been fantastic in all his roles. Even if the show or movie is iffy, he’s made them better.
My favorite is his role on sons of anarchy. Absolutely love Venus van dame!!!!!
And Vice Principals. I love him as baby billy in righteous gemstones too
Cletus van damme
& Vice Principals
GAMBY YOU IDIOT
I loved The Shield and Goggins and Jay Karnes (Dutch) were my favorites. I was ambivalent about Justified - don't remember much from it at all, just watched it because I liked Goggins and Olyphant. Was so glad when QT started picking up on him
Rewatching justified right now as prep for the sequel series this summer, and goddamn I could listen to Boyd and raylan trade barbs all day.
Currently rewatching Justified. Him and Olyphant play off each other so well.
"Oh nononononono. You got me talking politics... I didn't wanna!"
I can hear this , that’s how good he was
I quote this weekly
His delivery of that line is so good it almost makes you forget all of the horrific shit he literally just said, lol. Almost.
Walton Goggins is an absolute treasure. I haven’t seen him give a bad performance yet. He’s got range, comedy to drama he’s solid AF!
And he's amazing in the Righteous Gemstones.
Uncle Baby Billy!!! The husband and father we all aspire to be!
“No, he’s not a baby. He’s a slender, silver haired man in his 70’s.”
‘Now who wants to suck an old man’s dick?’
My wife still doesn't understand why I always say "It's bedtime for Baby Billy!" every night
Baby Billy is one of my favorite TV characters of all-time.
Absolutely, he was great in Vice Principals too which is when I really took notice of him. Someone suggested I watch Justified because of him and it too was great. Again everything is good
Justified is so good and Goggins is amazing the entire way through.
Remember, he was only supposed to be in the pilot.
And then he carried that through right to the finale.

now you need to watch the shield !
Shane. Fucking Shane.
He was freaking amazing in Vice Principals... uniquely amazing.
Vice Principals is great.
And Vice Principals.
GO OUTSIDE, NERD!!!
He totally kills it in Vice Principals. Since watching it I automatically watch anything he’s in, regardless of reviews.
Not to mention he’s super kind! I served him at a restaurant I worked at in LA several years ago. Became an even bigger fan since then
Here’s your sperm.
He’s the best part of gi Joe. You don’t have to see it; just take my word for it.
His deadpan character in community it's amazing. Hell, even as a Voice actor in Invincible he does an amazing job.
I think for me, his best performance was Venus in sons of Anarchy
Edit: the name was Venus not Ava
It was amazing. FX producers must love him. Completely stole those episodes
100% agree. Super underrated performance. He played the humor, sadness and strength of the character masterfully.
hes pretty good in Six on the history channel too!
I've been singing this guy's praises since The Shield.
Probably my favorite actor who acts professionally with a native southern accent. Not as common as you might think.
But he's just amazing in Hateful 8.
"Nice try Bushwacker".
Also possibly currently my favorite Tarantino movie. I've danced on that a lot but I mean look, they made Chris Mannix a sympathetic protagonist by the end of that film. That's a cool movie.
Right on! I think this movie might be my favorite Tarantino film as well. I barely understand why people hate on it so much. I thought it was intriguing all the way through, and I love the single setting aspect of it as well as the mixture of characters. The performances are all incredible as well.
It nails a sort of vibe that’s not seen in movies these days, that like, 50s, 60s filmed for NBC play sort of vibe, which I know QT is all about. Fuckin Stagecoach, Philco Television Playhouse n shit.
What the hell, people hate on H8? Why?
Over the last few years, I've tried to watch Tarentino more often as I haven't seen most of them. So far, I think Hateful 8 is one of my favorites. I've watched it like 3 times now.
Talk about being "capable of playing a very compelling anti-hero." It's difficult to recommend The Shield because there's seven seasons and not every episode is a banger, but I don't regret watching any of it.
Edit: forgot to mention for those who haven't watched it that the last season and series finale makes for up any of the less-good episodes. This ain't Games of Thrones, this is worth watching till the end.
He somehow makes an impression in everything he does. Really entertaining in Shanghai Noon despite brief screen time. Possibly the best thing about the latest Tomb Raider movie as well.
Walton Goggins gives a low key amazing performance in everything he's in. He falls into the same realm as Tucci, Margo Martindale, and BD Wong
Raaaaaaaylan Givens, as I live and breathe, to what do I owe this pleasure?
We dug coal together
It seems I'm out of bullets.
You mean Esteemed Character Actress and Fugitive from the Law Margo Martindale?
You mean former character actress turned fugitive on the freight vessel “Cargo Cartindale”, Margo Martindale?
And don't forget that millennials think BD Wong is a big deal.
When you get to Heaven, look up Margo Martindale! I won't be there, but my movies will!
DAMMIT. Beat me to it.
I was gonna say the same. He always does.
I really wanted him to play Jesse Custer in "Preacher", but they went young with it. Great actor.
I've always thought he'd make a killer Joker. He would have been great as Jesse.
Tim as Batman and Walton as Joker has been my dream casting for as long as I can remember.

I never thought of him for Jesse, but he would have been PERFECT now that you mention it.
I actually liked the casting for preacher overall wish they had continued the series. Rather than Jesse I think he would have been more interesting playing as the vampire bro.
Seriously. Been a fan of his ever since The Shield.
Was wondering when someone would mention that show. It’s when he came to my attention and then of course I had to watch Justified which was an absolutely brilliant performance.
It might not be beloved by everyone here but my family & I quote his character from 'Ant-Man & The Wasp' like crazy.
What a funny unintimidating mob boss lackey.
Can't wait to see him in the Fallout amazon series too.
I would never describe him as low key though.
My exact thoughts. He was great in Hateful 8... he was also among the strongest impressions laid in the movie, along with Samuel L Jackson, Kurt Russell, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Yeah he definitely wasn't Lowkey
I really need to watch some more of his films. Any suggestions?
Watch Justified. 6 seasons of him being amazing.
And The Shield, which I believe was 7 seasons.
33% of my job on reddit it to promote Justified, glad to see other advocates doing the good lawhds work (as Boyd would say)
Justified and Fringe are the two shows I’m constantly recommending on here.
Thanks! I will definitely give that a watch. I had heard of it, but not seen an episode yet.
On the surface it seems like a dumb action show. Like a Walker: Texas Ranger for the 2010s, but it is just so well written it is in a completely different league. Having Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins as the leads in a series that has a lot of dry wit obviously also does not hurt.
Edit: the first season is a bit weaker than the rest, as it had more of a "villain of the week" setup, while from the second season it leans more into having several intertwined story arcs spanning the whole season.
It's fantastic all the way through.
He has a show he did with Danny McBride called vice principals
Also amazing in The Righteous Gemstones alongside McBride.
Uncle Baby Billie!
