      Critics Consensus

While Walking With the Enemy tells a stirring and little-known true story, it's ultimately too heavy-handed to fully resonate.

Audience Member I had written this film off as average to poor but the final third makes up a lot of ground and it ends in my mind on a high. Yes it is far from perfect. Yes I have no idea how much is true and how much has been elaborated but you do get to understand the brutality and unfairness of war. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review panayiota k The film is so bad that I couldn't even finish it. Some of the scenes transition so harshly that they make me question the director's observation skills. And don't get me started on the accents. I don't know how accurate they are but they sound ridiculous. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Another film inspired by a true story. I am not familiar with the events in Hungary during WWII, so I found this a little confusing at times, but it was interesting to see the role the Swiss played in helping some of the Jews in Budapest. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A very inspiring story Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review roger g Good portrayal of a Hungarian Jew who infiltrates the Nazi SS during WW II to save fellow Jews from sure annihilation. Good enough film to invest the time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent movie. Me and my wife fumly enjoyed it. Ella Taylor NPR An old-school drama so sincere, yet so ham-fisted, it borders on parody. Apr 27, 2014 Full Review Justin Chang Variety A little-known tale of Jewish resistance during the final days of WWII gets tackled with appreciable ambition and blunt, sporadic emotional force in "Walking With the Enemy." Apr 27, 2014 Full Review Cary Darling Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com Sometimes awkward and melodramatic, the debut film from director Mark Schmidt nevertheless derives strength from its little-known true-life story of Holocaust heroism. Rated: 3/5 Apr 25, 2014 Full Review David Parkinson Radio Times A compelling story is clumsily told in debut director Mark Schmidt's à clef account of the wartime heroics of Pinchas Rosenbaum. Rated: 2/5 Oct 14, 2021 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com A daunting amount of better made films recounting the period flounces the necessity of Schmidt's picture. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Sr. Rose Pacatte National Catholic Reporter Walking with the Enemy is an intense and stirring war film that reveals several heroes heretofore unknown to most of us, and this is a good thing.
