While I'd always seen screencaps of this film - I didn't watch it until a few months ago. I wasn't expecting just HOW intense this film would get before reaching the end. After watching the whole thing - I can see how some of the tropes present have bled into other media, and appreciate those things far more.

If you're particularly sensitive about SA, this is NOT the film for you.
It gets a bit graphic in that regard.

The English sub soundtrack was lossless and the surround sound was very good. Even non-anime fans should pick this up because it transcends the medium.

You know you've entered a powerful world when you suddenly realize you've forgotten that what you're watching is nothing but ink and paint. But, oh my god, what this master of animation does with mere ink and paint is absolutely breathtaking. At first, you believe you're watching just some silly, brainless, pop-culture fluff. And, yes, it is showing you what that culture is like. But almost at the same moment, you become aware of a deep, very dark and twisted level of human depravity and pain.

The strangest part of this film is that the director/writer makes you feel sympathy with the worst of the characters he draws for you. Not at first, of course. At first, you are thoroughly repulsed and sickened by these people. But slowly, as you watch what they do and how and why they think as they do, you cannot help but feel a twinge of compassion. They are just as much victims of an ugly, twisted system as those who are openly exploited.

I was under the mistaken belief that this turned out to be the last film made by Satoshi Kon, the creator who made Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers, besides other impressive films. In fact, Millennium Actress, from 2019(?), was, I believe, his last film. These all are outstanding works of art, not just "cartoons". You get the feeling with his work that had he the funds, he would certainly have made live-action versions of his stories. But, budgets being what they are, he had to settle for anime. Still, his work is just as masterful and important as anything coming out of Ghibli. It's just a shame that this man had to die so young. I suspect we've been robbed of some truly unique and powerful films. Oh, well. That's life -- such as it is.

Again, I must emphasize that this film is rather deceptively simple. By the time you've gotten half-way through the story, you are absolutely hooked. Several times, I was rather surprised to realize that my mouth was open in shock at what I was seeing. The power of the sound and images he created is simply overwhelming. You quickly forget that you're watching a film; you are pulled, intellectually, emotionally, totally, into the story this man is telling. And even though the scenes you witness seem to be exploitative, the truth is that he is actually showing you exactly how the entertainment industry exploits the people it sucks into its web.

I'm certain he intended this to be an indictment of the Japanese entertainment industry. But we all know that the world-wide entertainment industry operates along the very same lines. In fact, truth be known, it is far, far worse than any of us suspect. Only recently have some brave individuals been able to come out publicly and reveal just how perverse this industry truly is. Yes, we have whistle-blowers in every industry. But the entertainment industry operates at a truly depraved level of exploitation only recently being revealed. Fascinating how this anime director, twenty-some years ago seemed to be one of the first to sound the alarm. Sad, of course, how no one was really listening.

How can a cartoon send you into a kind bending, question-reality, what-is-real level of mood? Best thing about it, in my opinion is that it is slow burning and you never see the crazy trip it's taking you on until you're already on the ride. IMHO, watch this movie now

Es una lástima que esta película no se comercialice en México (ni siquiera en plataformas digitales) pero por fin se tiene la oportunidad de disfrutarla mediante esta edición de lujo. El precio puede ser un poco elevado pero vale muchísimo la pena si eres fan de la película, fan del anime, fan del terror psicológico o simplemente un cinéfilo buscando las mejores películas para su colección.

El Blu Ray: Contiene la remasterización de la película y se ve excelente y realmente se siente como una buena restauración digital. También tiene la versión en la resolución original. Tiene una buena cantidad de contenido extra, incluyendo unas lecturas de la película con el director Satoshi Kon (Q.E.P.D.) donde explica algunas partes de la película, así como entrevistas tanto al director como al elenco japonés. En resumen, tiene mucho más por ver que solo la película y tiene la suficiente cantidad de contenido como para justificar su precio.

El DVD: Toma en cuenta que es región 1, pero yo lo pude probar en mi computadora que afortunadamente es región libre. Pensé que el DVD solo tendría la película (ya que es muy común hoy en día ver que las ediciones en DVD son las que menos contenido tienen) pero también tiene todos los extras del Blu Ray a excepción de las lecturas de la película con el director y la versión de resolución original (esto por obvias razones ya que el DVD es definición estándar).

Como extra, tiene una portada reversible. No es como que yo usaría esa portada pero debo mencionarlo en caso de que te interese o te parezca un buen detalle.

El único punto negativo que tiene es que no tiene subtítulos ni doblaje en español, solo el audio original en japonés con doblaje y subtítulos en inglés. Obviamente si sabes inglés no creo que sea un obstáculo pero si quieres mostrársela o regalársela a otra persona que no sepa inglés, yo creo que deberás tomar en cuenta eso.

En general es una excelente edición de este clásico de la animación y es bueno saber que esta es la versión que es más fácil de conseguir (hay otras ediciones en Blu Ray o DVD pero probablemente le dolerá más a tu cartera al ser significativamente más caras).

En cuanto al servicio de Amazon: Excelente. Llegó con su slipcover (que es de muy buena calidad, dándole un aspecto elegante y digna de colección) y en perfectas condiciones salvo unas pequeñas deformaciones en su slipcover, pero es casi que algo inevitable al ser de importación y ser pasada por muchas manos.
