Vsevolod II Ol’govich

 

Date of birth unknown; died Aug. 1, 1146. Prince of Chernigov (1127-39) and Kiev (1139-46); son of the Chernigov prince Oleg Sviatoslavich.

Vsevolod II Ol’govich fomented and skillfully manipulated feuds between the princes in order to retain the throne of Kiev. During the reign of Vsevolod II Ol’govich, exploitation of the urban population was intensified, and the prince’s stewards, Ratsha and Tudor, brought about the ruin of many of the inhabitants of Kiev. Vsevolod II Ol’govich regarded Kiev as his hereditary property. Soon after his death there was unrest in Kiev.
