This movie is great. The framing and camera work is borderline incompetent, the plot makes absolutely no sense, the special effects have all the flair and production value of an early episode of Xena, and the eyebrow acting is straight out of a porn film--the actors often times seem confused as to whether they should be more focused on hitting their mark or making sure their good profile is toward camera, and at all times seem not quite up to the task of holding two thoughts in their heads at once. All of which makes the film extremely funny-- and not funny in a Van Helsing kind of way. That was a film that was funny at all of the wrong moments. This film knows exactly what type of film it is, and it knows exactly how bad it is, and it revels in that. It's all part of the fun, because story and plot and craftsmanship are all more or less beside the point here. And what is the point, you ask? Hot boys, of course. This movie set out with one main purpose: to show extremely hot boys in extremely hot situations. And, once again unlike Van Helsing, when this movie sets out to do something, it succeeds. Does it ever! Wow.. very, very, very hot. And rubbing themselves, too. If I had known that Christian school students sported this many different styles of designer boxer briefs, I might have been converted. So, the point of the plot and everything else is just to make the film bearable when the boys aren't mostly naked.. if it had been just some passable, solid story, it would have done that, but it would have been deadly boring. Instead, it goes full out for hilarious over-the-top camp, and it's never boring for a minute. Well, OK, maybe for a few minutes.
There's a school of thought in film criticism that I very much agree with, and it states that you should not judge a film based on what it is trying to do, but by how well it accomplishes what it set out for-- and by that criteria, this one totally earned the 5 stars I gave it. Bring on the Ed Wood dialogue, electrified confessional booths, and boys strapped to voodoo tables in their underwear!

David DeCoteau has become somewhat notorious over the past three years for creating cheap, formulaic horror with heavy homoerotic overtones and lots of twentysomething male flesh. _Voodoo Academy_ is one of his first flicks in this vein, and like the rest of them. it features no scares or shocks, and relatively little blood. It does have plenty of unintentional laughs, though. The acting is wooden, the dialogue is awful, and the production values are cheap, cheap, cheap.
Of course, none of this matters. If you're watching this -- or any of DeCoteau's recent horror movies -- you basically want to see half a dozen pretty young men walk around in nothing but their skivvies for about an hour and a half. The "restored director's cut" of _Voodoo Academy_ (on DVD) certainly delivers the goods, and for that matter, delivers them better than any of DeCoteau's other movies. It's no _Citizen Kane_ (heck, it's not even _Citizen Toxie_), but it gets the job done.

This very B grade horror film left alot to be desired. Aside from one blasemophous scene where the demon priest sucks on a crusifix to suggest oral sex, and a young man who has ripped open his shirt to carees his pecks sucks his crusifix, there wasnt much to make this unrated. If your expecting to see frontal or rear nudity, forget it! The nearest thing is teenage guys running around in tight calvin Klein undies. However, if your someone who likes to use your imagination, this might be for you. One good thing about this flick is a pre Charmed hottie Drew Fuller rubbing himself all over in his undies. If your a big Drew fan like me, it might be worth buying, utherwise go buy a playgirl.

Obviously this is not an oscar calibur film, but it isn't meant to be. Riley Smith makes this movie. I will watch anything he is in. I am hoping his movie LOVER'S LANE will soon be on DVD too. Voodoo academy is indeed homoerotic as others have mentioned, and it is nice to see this type of thing incorporated into a movie. The same old tired formulas in horror movies--damsels in distress--is outdated. Bring on the guys! DeCoteau is a cool director.

In 24 years, I've wasted a lot of money on a lot of different things, but the ... I spent on Voodoo Academy was the most completely wasted of all my mistakes. This is headed for resale immediately. I'll feel guilty dumping it on someone else but I'm gonna do it anyway. None of the characters in the film have any depth or purpose. Some die--who cares? None of the actors can read a line. The thin plot could have been forgiven if the pace were reasonable, but it drags on like an earthworm crossing a sidewalk. Editing was terrible. Some reviewers refer to "homoerotic scenes"--nonsense, there were no truly erotic scenes. If you still buy this, watch it with the sound off, it's much better that way. The hunks are more interesting if you can't hear them.

slightly better than most of this directors films. the acting was fine 'tho could have used more rehearsal before filming. the story is trite, but is guess the main theme is not about storylines no matter how thin. anyway, it made me squirm.

I only saw this because I bought a dvd boxed set and this was on there. Thinking I was in for a horror film I was looking forward to it but oh dear was i wrong. This is plain and simply a gay movie with a silly supernatual story, don't get me wrong I laughed and laughed at it(whether I was supposed to I don't know) the bad acting and effects and all the men with there shirts off wasn't bad either, but it was just a very surreal experience.
