Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany has been tipped to replace Roberto Martinez as Belgium manager following their humiliating exit from the 2022 World Cup.
Belgium needed to beat Croatia in their final group game in order to make it to the knockout stage but could only muster a 0-0 draw, with Romelu Lukaku missing many great chances to win the match.
Following on from a lucky win against Canada and a late defeat to Morocco, the Red Devils’ time in Qatar has been fraught with terrible performances and off-pitch drama.
This tournament was viewed as the last chance for Belgium’s ‘golden-generation’ of players like Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard to win a trophy but instead they have suffered an embarrassing end.
Much maligned manager Roberto Martinez will leave his role with his contract now up and his successor will have a tough job on their hands – transitioning the side away from the elder group of superstars to the younger crop of talent coming through.
And Manchester United and Netherlands icon Jaap Stam believes that the Belgium FA should look no further than the former national team captain Kompany.
The ex-defender was an integral part of his nation’s and City’s success over the last decade, earning 89 caps and winning the Premier League title four times before retiring in 2020.
The 36-year-old has begun his managerial career in style, with his attack-minded Burnley side currently top of the Championship.
‘Eventually, I can see Vincent Kompany becoming Belgium’s manager because he’s been doing well,’ Stam told Football Betting.
‘He’s gone into management the right way because you need to learn at different levels and work with different players to eventually manage the national team.
‘What’s doing now with Burnley is good and if he keeps going then I’m sure he can also make the next step to the Premier League.
‘Roberto Martinez is a very good manager, he has a philosophy and knows how he wants to play football. Belgium have several older players now and they need to switch things up and bring in some young, quality players if they’re available.
‘On paper, they have an interesting team, but on the pitch, they’re not good enough.’
