In saying that been a history geek I entered with my eyes wide open in terms of what to expect in general terms second world war, german then russian occupation, general modus operandi of SS, Gestapo, Enzatgruppen, KGB to name just a few but its one thing watching history docs, reading history books and another been confronted with the actual realities of how these organisations operated.and maintained control over the people and scary to think we are not talking about a period long ago soviet union offically ended in 1990 especially if you view it through thr light of current russian activities in Ukraine.
The things i learned in this musuem were a surprise in many ways because i had expected a focus on germany and whilst mentioned the focus was clearly on thr actions of USSR and what struck me was alot of the actions/practices mentioned were near exact duplicates of those the Soviet Union joined the allies in fighting against during 2WW and we in the west assocaite with 30's and 40's germany but USSR then proceeded to implement post war against all left in thr east.
If you are of a sensitive disposition then maybe the basement prison and execution chamber should be avoided as things do take a dark and graphic turn as your are faced with the grim realities of both dictatoral regimes nothing is dressed up in fact the video played in execution chamber really drives point home of how brutal things were.
One of thr most curious things i found about Vilinus before visiting this musuem was how explicit thr cities support of Ukraine was wheather that be on the messages on public transport, a banner on thr top of one of the most prominant skyscrapers that said putin the hague is waiting for you thr many flags, weaths displayed in ukraine colours when casualties are annouced. - Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada2,287 contributionsWe felt paying 8 euros to enter the tower was a bit steep considering we only spent about 20 minutes inside the small space. There wasn't much to see or do here and we felt the nearby Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania have a better bang for our buck.
The tower has a small exhibit to the history of the tower and includes a small iron wolf pelt. There is also a room to explain the Baltic Way including a picture opportunity. The highlight was getting to the top of the tower and looking out over the city and seeing the flagpole.
We felt you could enjoy the tower from the outside just as well and easily read up on the exhibitions on your own time. We felt for a castle exhibition this was easily one of the most overpriced ones we went to during our stay in the Baltics. The nearby platform gives similar views of the city and nearby three cross monument.
If you have mobility issues we'd recommend not doing this tower but if you want a view from one of the hilltops in Vilnius this would be the place to do it because they have an affordable funicular that is 1 Euro each way. The legend here is that once Napoleon saw the church he wished to take it back to Paris in the palm of his hand.
We went on a Sunday in the morning and poked our heads inside while a mass was taking place. There wasn't anywhere to sit so we decided to come back later in the afternoon to appreciate the interior further. There is a sign across the street in a spot where you can take a good picture of the facade and on the side of the church are examples of the bricks that were used in the construction of the church.
We included this church in a self guided walking tour of Vilnius because there are many things to see here. - Bea705 contributionsThe Church of St. Peter and St. Paul regarded as the most famous Baroque church of Vilnius is recognized worldwide as one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in the world and I cannot agree more. It is definitely a pearl of architecture.
The church’s founder, M. K. Pacas, died in 1682 before construction was completed. M.K. At that time, the city’s defensive wall had ten gates and the Gates of Dawn are the only ones which survived. Today it is associated worldwide by Catholics, Russian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox with worship and miracles caused by Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy. Her miraculous painting in the Gates of Dawn is one of the most famous Renaissance paintings in Lithuania. The miraculous painting is also called the Madonna of the Gates of Dawn or the Madonna of Vilnius. It is located in the chapel and was painted specifically for this chapel in the 17th century, following the example of Dutch painter Martin de Vos. Be aware that quite a lot seemed to be closed in February, and most shops don’t open until at least 11, with many not opening until 12 noon.

The Hill has a few lookouts as well as the cement three crosses that were destroyed by the Soviets and the current three cross monument. It is about a 15 minute walk to the top from any side of the mountain and there are a few spots to rest on the way. There is paid parking near the bottom but if you're exploring the old town area by foot it is easy to incorporate the three cross monument.
Plan to spend about 30-40 minutes walking and additional time going to lookouts if you plan to do this hill. We spent about 75 minutes walking around the 19 different memorial sections. Each one had a sign with information in Lithuanian, English, Hebrew, and Polish. We only saw two other people briefly while walking around - very peaceful, quiet, and emotional. Most of the path was paved, but to get close to some of the memorials you have to leave the path.

You can check out artifacts from this time including a collection of pagan items at the nearby Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania Museum as well as royal artifacts from the crypts.
We spent about 15 minutes inside the church just walking around and admiring the artwork and unique features. We would have spent more here because we were interested in seeing the crypts but we found out that these are only open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for English tours and a booking needs to be made in advance.
We included the cathedral in a self guided walking tour of Vilnius because there are many attractions nearby. There are also many good restaurants to the south and east of the cathedral. Between the cathedral and bell tower there is a "miracle" tile where you can make a wish if you stand there or spin three times.
