They daily cleaned the suite, changing the towels. For breakfast we had a various buffet: croassants, different cakes, biscuits, high quality yogurt and jams, dried and fresh seasonal fruit, cheese and ham. I must mention the relaxing and scented garden surrounding the pools and all the villa buildings.
Definitely Villa Mon Repos is a privileged place to live a relaxing and romantic vacation in Taormina.
You think you might be staying in the main building and that is what almost all the photographs are of but actually most of the rooms are in a block of apartments next door which has many other apartments owned by other people and rented out independently to the hotel. Anyone can enter the site by driving or walking and get into the buildings, the pool area or the balconies. There is no oversight as to who should or should not be there.
Our apartment was broken into whilst we were out at dinner by simply wrenching the patio door open with a screwdriver. They took many valuables but even more sadly the combination of this and the absolutely awful behaviour of the hotel manager in dealing with this completely ruined our stay here.
The hotel does not provides any safes in the room ( why not??) and even the comment from the police was that the doors are not very secure for such an expensive upmarket hotel. It didn't take much for someone to open the door and there are no alarms or visible security to deter anyone from walking in to the block.
The hotel manager completely lacked any customer service skills and in fact she made the whole experience worse. At the price you pay to stay here security and customer service should be a given but she failed to recognise this.
There was only one other couple staying in the hotel at the same time and given that it was the height of busy season I now wonder why it was so empty. There were other guests in the apartments but they had booked directly through accommodation websites and not with the hotel. Taormina was super busy so there was no shortage of tourists but clearly not many had chosen to stay here, and even then the hotel failed the guests they did have!
I wouldn't take the risk of staying here and having the same happen to you. There are many other options available in Taormina so why take the chance! If you do decide to stay make sure you check that your room and belongings are secure!
We stayed in Room 2 in the annex building i.e. not the main villa house. The room was cleaned daily. The bed/bedding in the main room and towels seemed clean. However we were disappointed with the location, service and accommodation for a few reasons.
We arrived with 2 large suitcases and a small hand luggage. The gentleman at reception seemed a nice person but struggled with a lot of basic front of house tasks e.g. he escorted us to our room, taking the small hand luggage, leaving myself and my wife to carry the 2 heavy suitcases. He made no effort to help my wife with the heavy case, even when she asked for help getting the suitcase up the stairs so I carried mine then returned down the stairs to help her whilst he watched! Not a good start. He did not orientate us to the room so we struggled to work out the phone and ended up making trips to the main house reception for simple queries.
This is very much a B&B. There is no restaurant on site or food provision other than breakfast which was okay - coffee, croissants, cold meats, cheese, cereals, but some times, these ran out for guests who arrived later
It was located half way between the beach and Taormina town so at least 25 minute walk to either location for the nearest store or restaurant. The roads are narrow and winding so only advisable if you are up for the walk. Taxis are standard rate of 15 euros, so even a short round trip cost 30 euros
The room was a 2 bed suite with a small outside area. The outside area for our room and neighbouring Room 1 was in the shade and had minimal sea view.
The lounge and bedrooms were a good size but the decor was basic and tired.
The bathroom in the suite was disproportionately tiny and unpleasant to use. The bathroom had severe rising damp. The toilet seat was broken i.e. the seat cover would not stay up and essentially rested on your back when seated. The shower cubicle was extremely small with a broken shower head holder. It was hard to see how staff could be unaware of these issues as they were so obvious within moments of our arrival and cleaning staff kept replacing the broken shower holder off the floor. The shower holder only got fixed once we reported it but we were casually informed that the toilet seat could not be fixed during our stay. The shower cubicle was so small that the shower door was not able to open fully to enter. There was no ledge to put anything on so showering was a juggling act or repeated bending to reach for bottles on the shower tray and bumping into the door etc
There was a small mirror in the bathroom but no other mirror in the entire suite.
The second bedroom (in line with the bathroom) was dark and smelt; it too had rising damp. The spare duvet in this room smelt strongly of damp.
There was no safe in the suite, which made us uncomfortable leaving our valuables; an issue as a previous review mentioned that they had been burgled in this annex
There was no iron in the room.
There was a kitchenette unit in the lounge, with a sink, gas stove and mini-fridge, but no utensils, crockery or cutlery provided or available when we asked. Bottled water was replenished in the fridge and cost 3 euros each. There was no kettle or coffee/tea in the room which would have gone a long way to making us feel comfortable. There was a working TV in the lounge and main bedroom.
Overall, we did not like being in the room but enjoyed the grounds and an amazing wedding. Our impression was that the hotel lacked the concept of hospitality. The standard of the service and the accommodation was poor. There was no sense of the staff being guided by anyone senior or anyone overseeing the general experience of the hotel guest. At this price point, the accommodation fell far below our expectation. Many fellow wedding guests stayed in local Air BnB rooms for a fraction of what we paid and described a better experience. We will not be returning to this venue.
The bed and sofa were both comfortable- no complaints, there was a table and four chairs, two televisions - no international channels - Italian only, a minibar ( broken) which was promptly replaced. There were no other facilities no opportunity to make hot drink, I doubt that room service would ever arrive, and if it did it would be at a premium price , of course. The room/ suite is at the end of the building with no view, was overlooked by several other apartments. It is pretty much unusual for any property to be without a view on this side of the town. The upstairs neighbours were very social having friends around for meals with much scraping of chairs on tiled floors and much animated conversation, all very audible. The breakfast offered was basic - fruit platter, coffee, some assorted sweet pastries, water, juice- anything else is at extra cost. Sometimes it was necessary to call down to the basement or look around to find someone to serve you. There were other negatives, but you probably get the idea! This was not good value for money £2000 for one week.
There were positives, the staff were without exception, charming and helpful, this was the biggest redeeming feature of the stay. The position of the property afford beautiful views to Isola Bella on the one side and the bay with Etna in the background on the other. The villa itself was a charming building with much history, it is living too much off its heritage.
Unsurprisingly we will not return, fortunately there are many alternatives at a more reasonable cost.
1) VIEW. Our room is above the breakfast dining room. The view from our room was fabulous, one window with the sea view, and, from the balcony we could see the garden, the lovely pool and the Catania bay and Mountain Etna. The garden and the pool were both just too pretty, make sure you spend some time exploring them.
2) ROOM. The room itself was comfortable and bright. The high-ceiling definitely contributed towards that. The bathroom was spacious as well. When I was booking the room I saw an elegant cast iron window and some comfortable safas on the website which I thought would be in our room, in fact they were in the public area. Luckily it was very quiet the night we stayed, which almost made us thought we were the only guests. We spent some time in the living room drinking red wine, didn't watch TV in case of disturbing others.
3) INTERNET. We couldn't manage to use the wifi during our stay (the password was correct but for some reasons it just didn't work). It didn't bother us much as we didn't really need it.
4) TRANSPORT. I only knew they have their own parking but didn't really know where it was. It turned out to be just 10 metres up the hill from their main gate. Maybe it's me being blind but if they could make a P and an arrow signs on the wall of the main gate it would be much more helpful. We booked our dinner at a restaurant which was about 10-15 mins walk. The road was narrow and didn't really design for pedestrians. It was rained heavily when we finished our dinner so we took a taxi and it's 10 euros.
5) SERVICE. The girl at the front desk helped my friend moved our small suitcases into the villa when I went to park. She was always there when we needed her help. The next morning there was a nice man from the hotel kindly answered lots of questions we asked about Taormina and gave us several tips.
It's more like a boutique B&B rather than a hotel for us, and that's exactly what we want. If you are self-driving and looking for a romantic place to stay I would definitely recommend this place.
