This is one of the most visited sites in Vienna so plan accordingly. I went on a Monday morning in the second half of April, and the crowds touring the palace interiors were really intense. I had purchased the Sisi ticket in advance so I wouldn’t be forced into a timed entry. This ticket also covers the Sisi Museum at The Hofburg and Imperial Furniture Collection. At Schonbrunn, the ticket covers the Grand Tour plus the audio guide, which is good. If I were to do this again, I would research the guided tours on offer through the official site - maybe that helps with the crowds a bit? Regardless, the part I enjoyed the most was the gardens, and those are free and extensive. I did buy a ticket for the maze, and that was fun. If you are a budget traveler, I would honestly consider skipping the palace and visiting the free gardens!

The hype about the beauty of the buildings and and architecture is verifiable by this writer. The old town is elegant. easily walkable, and yes, the pastries and coffee is delicious around the historical area. Walk and drink up the history. Include Vienna on you list.

Despite being smaller than the British Museum in London or The Louvre in Paris, this Viennese Arts History Museum is equally impressive and most of all beautiful to the very last detail. From the wealth of pictures and sculptures to the beautiful Cafe and historic jewelry shop inside the museum, everything gives you the measure of the pacific imperial role Austria has played for more than 600 years in the heart of Europe. Watch out for the seasonal thematic exhibitions they host, which could surprise and enlighten you.

I had visited previously several years ago so this was a return visit for me. I didn’t pay to enter the alter or other areas this time; rather, I used the stair climb at the South Tower to try to fight jet lag; it was around 6 euro as I recall. The views are definitely worth the climb and it surprisingly wasn’t very busy- perhaps most go there elevator route. I must admit that my claustrophobia kicked in about halfway up. Luckily, I just took it slowly and had a lovely conversation with a lady who was on her way down! It’s definitely worth visiting but my suggestion to visitors is to walk around the entire structure- the details on the exterior is amazing and so many people miss it!

Very nice park with a lot of green. Beautiful fountains and statues. Park is perfect for walking.
Walking distance from the old town (St Stephan’s cathedral) is 30min.

The entire Hofburg complex is amazing and it’s worth it just to walk around and explore the exterior. The complex includes the Sisi Museum (which seems to be flooded with tourists at all times), Burgkappel where the Vienna Boys Choir sings, the Spanish Riding School and many other buildings. The complex is well sign-posted so you will know what you are viewing. Most of the buildings require a ticket for entry, but I would still visit the complex even if you don’t plan on entering any buildings because the architecture is amazing. It’s also bordered by several glorious parks.

The zoo is relatively compact so most visitors won’t spend all day here, but I did and there’s definitely a lot to do. I visited on a Tuesday during the second half of April and it wasn’t very crowded, likely because of intermittent light rain, but it was still a great visit. The website shows a map with the schedule of feeding/training times; it’s great because the times are spread out throughout the day so you can experience several sessions if you like. The sessions are accompanied by a guide in German, but they all answered questions in English after their talks. I didn’t realize the zoo had koalas and pandas, which aren’t common in zoos so it was fun to see different types of animals. The cafe in the historic building in the middle of the zoo is breathtaking and good quality; there are more casual options. The zoo is closest to the Hietzing u-Bahn stop although most probably visit in combination with Schonbrunn, which I toured the previous day. If you are short on either time or budget, I’d consider skipping Schonbrunn Palace and visit its free gardens and the zoo; those were the best bits as the crowds at the palace were overwhelming, even on a Monday in April.

The Schonbrunn gardens are amazing; I visited towards the end of April when the wisteria was unfortunately starting to fade; regardless, the gardens are diverse and very interesting. I didn’t pay to see the specialty gardens - I only paid to visit the palace, maze, and zoo. In my humble opinion, the gardens and zoo are the stars of the show. I went on a Monday and the crowds at the palace were overwhelming. If you are on a budget or stressed for time, I’d skip the palace and just visit the gardens- they are well sign-posted!

An impressive collective of famous and not so famous art from the late 1800s onwards. Monet, Degas, Renoir and the list goes on. Very popular and gets busy but not surprising. Plan a good half-day to do it justice.

The opera house is absolutely stunning. I saw Carmen in late April and the cast was phenomenal, along with the music. It’s truly an unforgettable experience. My advice is to study the seat map on the official website with care; my tickets were “kategorie” 2 at a price of 190 Euro; I consider that extremely expensive. I sat in seat 1, row 1, of Loge 3. Anything on the left third of the stage was impossible to see. It didn’t seem that way when I was looking at the seat map, but I should have considered that and asked about this specific seat before I bought.

Harry potter style Library. Very nice to have a look around. But cannot read any books here. Sort of a small museum. The main library is in a different section. This is more of a small museum. Nice to take photos.
