The All Day Breakfast revival was called 'The Mall'. As I recall it was more of an Eldorado pisstake with none of the AA characters, until the owner of The Mall is revealed to be Boadecia Overall.

If my memory isn't on the blink, that is.

benthalo

Strange bit of quoting there, TJ!

Yep, now that you mention it there was an Eldorado parody. Not a patch on The Full Wax one.

I blame Porter's Beer.

Or "The Bureau", for that matter!

Now that I've been reminded of it, The Mall was Britain's first "three times daily" soap yep? Another straight line, there.

The Mrs Overall cameo in All Day Breakfast was a bit of a smug, audience-fellating 'Pulling A Lazarou' moment.

I didn't see the revival on TV60 though. Was it any good?

AA on DVD:

is this a tad dodgy or wot?

QuoteVIDEO TO DVD TRANSFER

This is not a commercially released DVD, the source material has been researched in accordance with listing policy and found to be in the public domain.

So in answer to your query, yes it is.

I read that just as she appeared on screen! All Day Breakfast is very uneven and frustrating anyway - overlong sketches, an ad parody which goes on for bloody ages... but every item is usually saved by a couple of outstanding lines. And why does she abandon the format at the end and perform a solo routine and song to a studio audience? Very strange, but I respect the Alan Rickman appearance - done with the same disrespectful spirit as having The Moody Blues on Kenny Everett.

As for the Overall appearance, well it is a bit. But I'll save "You don't have to be mad to work here..."/"Oh good" exchange - Walters' flatness is lovely. On the whole, turning the sketch into a camera-wandering-into-view shoddy programme seemed strange after ten minutes of wooden but perfectly straight soap.

TV60 was spoilt by the gushing celebrity audience which bookended it, and Michael Parkinson wiping his eyes. Really horrible, but the sketch itself has its moments, if perhaps a reheat of the As Seen On TV behind the scenes film. At least it's a proper attempt rather than the horrors of the Sketch Show Story. The sketches for those 2001 specials are uniformly dreadful anyway. Easily her worst work.

I've just found the Wood & Walters tape so I'll have a stab at sticking something up later.

Very sorry Mr Moderator - my bad.

I think the Acorn Antiques revival in TV60 was pretty good. I liked the scenes before the actual episode with ( the actress playing )Miss BAbs saying something to the effect of

"Its modern, its new, its nineties!"

And of course the great speeded up close up to Mrs O's face as she utters he fact that she is in fact a  you-know-what!

What was the plot of the Sketch show Acorn antiques?

Did she do any other sketches? Was Julie in them>? Why were they so bad (according to one poster above?)

What does anyone think of the upcoming Acorn Antiques The Musical??APparently I have heard it will only be on for a 16 week run from March. Also, in early rehersals Victoria herself didnt attend, some unknown actors were there though. Imrie, Duncan and Walters are definitely in it tho....I really think WOdd should be too.

I cannot stop worrying about how it might turn out.

I am just hoping for a replica of the tv show. In other words, instead of a badly made tv soap, I hope we get a badly made musical. The plot should be of secondary importance, as it was in the original.

Think of how good it COULD be....seeing Mrs O waitning in the wings for her entrance, coming in at the wrong time. Or imagine Miss Babs finally singing "Anyone Can Break A Vase", complete with vase-based choreography from Mrs O and Berta in the background. Or Mrs O having difficulty with on stage props, like having her fly during a fantasy sequence only for the wires to snap, (dont know if Julie would be keen to do that every night for 16 weeks tho!)
The music starting at the wrong time, actors in the wrong position on stage, and trying to edge into position a la Berta,
Basically I am hoping that anything that CAN go wrong in a musical DOES go wrong...after all that is the true spirit of AA!

Jemble Fred

This is the first I've heard of it, but I can hear my credit card crying already.

Neil

Channel 5...NOW!

Have I missed the Frank Skinner one?  Oh, knickers.

EDIT:  Boom, first clip they open with is the "Kimberley" one.

Alberon

And they finished with a clip of the 'Let's do it' song.

Gavin

They are available at UKNova.com, although they are listed only by transmission date, not comedian!

Neil

Cheers Gavin, any ideas which one was the Frank Skinner one?

Anyway, just noticed that Victoria Wood is in a programme later on tonight:

QuoteVictoria Wood - Moon Walking
Time: 22:00 to 22:30 (30 minutes long).
When: Wednesday 13th October on ITV1

Cameras follow Victoria Wood and fifteen thousand women and men as they walk a night marathon through London to raise money for cancer research and cancer care.

Acorn Antiques The Musical, is that a joke?

Darrell

Quote from: "Neil"Acorn Antiques The Musical, is that a joke?

No, it's an actual musical they're doing!

Neil

Cor, that's amazing news, and Imrie, Duncan and Walters are confirmed to be in it?  Imagine being in the audience for that, I'd love to see Julie Walters belting out numbers as Mrs Overalls.  I bet this'll only be in That London though.

What's with this trend for musical versions of things these days?  I quite like the idea mind, but was it the Abba one that made them popular again?

Bums on seats dear, bums on seats.  It seems the only way of getting the general public interested in theatre or musical comedy is to remake a film/TV show, build something around a musicians' work or bring in the Americans.

Cases for the offence currently in Londontown:
The Rod Stewart Musical, Mamma Mia!, We Will Rock You, When Harry met Sally, Billy Elliot, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Fame, Jailhouse Rock, Lion King, Mary Poppins, The Producers (yes please), Saturday Night Fever... with more to come when "Bad Girls: The Musical" arrives*.  Really.

I'm still waiting for Ray Davies' "Come Dancing" as The Kinks' music has always been quite theatrical.  And, getting back to the point, I'm moist in anticipation of an Acorn Antiques musical.

*Not that I'm excited by this one.  Honest.  Ahem...

fanny splendid

She was on BBC Breakfast this morning promoting the Acorn Antiques musical, and I think, a new Acorn Antiques DVD. I didn't get too may details as the plumber arrived at that moment to fix the washing machine...

Jemble Fred

It must have been too early for her, she was a bit brusque wasn't she?

Basically, she announced that the tickets go on sale today. Presumably Bertha isn't in the show, as Wood is doubling up as Mrs Overall to give Julie Walters the matinees off. Preston and Imrie are definitely in it. Apparently the first half of the show is the CAST of Acorn Antiques arguing about the kind of show to do with the director, and the second half is the full glitzy AA package.

Mildly Diverting

It's also starring Josie Lawrence and Neil Morrissey.

There's more details here.

There's a report here and some sort of fancy video clip here.  I don't know what's on that as my computer can't play it.

Anyone know where?  I'll be gutted to miss this!

Argh, that sounds bloody great!  God I'd love to see this, can't wait to hear the reports about it from you lucky mainland types.

Godzilla Bankrolls

Darrell

Whilst idly channel flicking earlier I noticed a trail on Living TV for tomorrow's edition of 'Celebrity Extra', which has an interview with Wood and Walters about Acorn Antiques The Musical.

12:30pm on Sun 9 Jan, then.

Incidentally, do we know if this musical will be filmed/recorded at all for broadcast or release yet? I'd be surprised if not, but I'm still worried just in case it disappears as little more than a memory in the heads of some lucky Londoners.

seimaj

Dont know if the musical will ever be released to but on dvd or whatever, but I have heard that ITV2 are following rehersals and pre production for a special Making of type programme for when the musical opens...so I hear anyway.

Acorn Antiques IS being released on DVD on Feb 9 or thereabouts. Sadly I think it is another shitty BBC budget job, with cast interviews being the only extra available. A commentary for AA would have been priceless. Also would be nice to get other stiff like all episodes of the Mall, plus the 2 recent sketches of acorn antiques she has made. Yet another wasted opportunity.

Neil

Ooh, glad I thought to check the TV listings for once:

QuoteVictoria Wood: A BAFTA Tribute

Time: 21:05 to 22:10 (1 hour and 5 minutes long).
When: Saturday 5th February on BBC 1

BAFTA and the BBC join forces to celebrate one of Britain's best loved entertainers with a special gala event. Julie Walters, Lenny Henry, Richard E Grant and Jim Broadbent pay tribute to Victoria Wood, with contributions from Peter Kay and French and Saunders. Featuring a look back over her career with clips of her work. Wood will then be given the prestigious BAFTA Special Award followed by a preview of Acorn Antiques - The Musical.

The Mumbler

Gawd.  The first two lines of about half-a-dozen songs I've never heard - only to be interrupted by Alan Davies, Michael Parkinson and Richard Curtis talking about nothing.

Hans

For those that want to know, don't think it's been noted here, the Acorn Antiques DVD comes out in two days (the 7th).
