      Critics Consensus

Resting on a love triangle played out by poorly drawn characters, Very Good Girls succeeds mainly in making viewers want a better project for Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen.

Samuel P Two underage girls fall in love with the same creepy, possessive, rude, perverted, asshole dude for some reason. The main character keeps her relationship with him a secret. If any of the characters talk to each other, everything would be solved immediately, but they decide to lie to each other instead. The movie concludes with the characters talking to each other and everything is solved. Terrible movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Audience Member Not as bad as people make it out to be. I've enjoyed the work of Fanning and Olsen over the years, and they do a solid job here. However, I found the plot kind of thin and claustrophobic. If it's supposed to be about teens coming of age (bit of a stretch with the actresses being 20-24), then more of the world should be involved; adding more characters and locations might have given the movie more energy, which dragged a bit at times. Ultimately, the emotionally immature and unprepared run into problems which are overcome in the end through solid friendship. Good but not great film overall. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review dave j Coming of age story that revolves around teen Lilly (Dakota Fanning) than it does around her best friend Gerri (Elizabeth Olsen) who is at the stage of her life when she is on the brink of moving and to start a new college. Such as her dad is a physician who cheats on his mom (Ellen Barkin) as well as Lilly keeping a secret from her best friend that she is seeing the same guy as her best friend. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member La trama es muy estúpida. Elizabeth tiene demasiado talento como para actuar en cintas de este tipo. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member It was decent for what it was. The lead characters were well acted, albeit, too old to play graduating high schoolers. It also makes a flaw that most movies make for the purpose of having a story period. That flaw is all the problems could be solved with any form of communication. Susan Wloszczyna RogerEbert.com Will any film this year feature a moment more pretentious than David asking Lily to read a few lines of Sylvia Plath's poetry before their first kiss? That guy deserves a smack to the kisser all right. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 25, 2014 Full Review Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer Very Good Girls has a breezy yet bittersweet, vaguely nostalgic vibe. Rated: 3/4 Jul 25, 2014 Full Review Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times Despite a finely wrought lead performance by Dakota Fanning, the drama feels more like the stuff of a mild - and dated - YA novel than an involving exploration of female experience. Jul 24, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Foner's screenplay gets seriously bogged down in the development of the romance between Fanning and the barely serviceable Boyd Holbrook. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Yip Wai Yee The Straits Times (Singapore) The actresses try all they can to breathe life into their poorly drawn characters, but there is little they can do with the uninspired material that they have to work with. Rated: 2/5 Aug 24, 2018 Full Review Neely Swanson Easy Reader (California) Without better development, the multiple betrayals - Lilly of Gerry and Lilly's parents of each other and their family - would have resonated far more. Still, "Very Good Girls" is a good film and worth spending time with. Sep 16, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews
