Admission Requirements
Before applying for a course of study, please note the formal requirements. We can only process your application successfully if you have a suitable higher education entrance qualification and can demonstrate the required language skills.
If you would like to study with us, you will need a higher education entrance qualification that is valid for German universities (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB).
You can check in the anabin database or DAAD database on admission requirements whether your foreign educational qualification is recognised in Germany.
Your higher education entrance qualification directly entitles you to study in Germany?
Your educational qualification meets the admission requirements for studying at a German university or university of applied sciences. You can apply directly for an undergraduate course (bachelor’s, Diplom and State Examination programmes) and do not have to attend a Studienkolleg (preparatory course) beforehand.
Your higher education entrance qualification indirectly entitles you to study in Germany?
You will need to pass an assessment test known as the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) before commencing your studies. You can take this assessment test either externally or following a preparatory course at the Studienkolleg.
Both an indirect and a direct HZB may be subject-specific. A subject-specific HZB is only valid for certain degree subjects.
Most of our undergraduate degree programmes are taught in German, although we do offer a few English-language courses. Depending on the degree, we have certain requirements for your language skills.
Studienkolleg (preparatory course)
To be eligible to apply at the Studienkolleg, you will need a German certificate equivalent to B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is also possible to submit proof of 500 hours of German lessons. The Preparing for your studies page has more information.
Undergraduate programmes taught in German
At a minimum, you need German language skills corresponding to the “German Language Exam for Admission to Higher Education” at level 2 (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang, DSH-2) or an equivalent recognised in the Framework Regulations for German Language Examinations for Studies at German Universities (see §2 and §8, section 2).
At the start of your application it is sufficient to provide a certificate of German language proficiency at B2 level. Please note that you must provide a copy of a recognised certificate proving that your German is at a level in accordance with DSH-2 by no later than when you enrol.
In the case of applications for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine, you will need the required knowledge of German equivalent to the DSH-2 by no later than the end of the application period.
You can only prove your proficiency in German by providing a certified copy of one of the following German certificates:
- “Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang, Niveaustufe 2” (DSH-2)
- “Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache”, level 4 (TDN 4 in all categories; it is not possible to offset a 3 against a 5)
- “Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz, Stufe II” (DSD II)
- “Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung” (ZOP)
- “Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (formerly “Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom” and “Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom”)”
- “Zeugnis über die Feststellungsprüfung (FSP)”
- “interDaF–Prüfung C1”, level 2
- “Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch C2” (ÖSD C2)

Undergraduate programmes taught in English
You will need proof of your knowledge of English. Details of which documents we accept as proof can be found in the study regulations of your chosen subject.
Additional foreign language skills
You may also be required to provide evidence of further foreign language skills for your chosen degree programme.

Application Procedure
There are various application procedures at our university. The correct application procedure depends on your nationality, your academic qualifications and the desired degree programme. Please note our information for the respective applicant groups and use our checklists to ensure that you apply correctly.
Please submit your application documents in full, on time and in the prescribed manner. If your application does not meet these requirements, we will not be able to consider it in the admission procedure.

Please note the special regulations on applications from EU and EEA countries for the degree courses Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Law and B.Sc. programs with restrictions on admission.
If you have a foreign educational qualification, please apply via the uni-assist application portal. The application via uni-assist is an online application. Therefore, please upload the necessary appliation documents electronically using uni-assist’s MyAssist portal. Please observe the relevant application deadline. Please do not send certified documents or originals by post to uni-assist. Please submit your documents in the original language as well as a certified translation into German or English. Documents in English do not need to be translated.
The following documents are usually part of a complete application:
- secondary school leaving certificate, including subject grades (e.g. Baccalaureate, School Leaving Certificate)
- certificate for university entrance examination (if applicable)
- certificate for the Feststellungsprüfung (‘assessment test’) at the Studienkolleg (if applicable)
- if you have already studied at a university: evidence of credits and degrees already required
- evidence of the required language skills
- applications from China, India or Vietnam: certificate from the competent Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) – please refer to the APS webpages for the currently applicable terms and conditions: APS China, APS India, APS Vietnam.
- applications for higher semesters of study: credits form (Anrechnungsbescheid) from the competent Landesprüfungsamt or examination board at our university
You may have to submit other documents in addition to the above application documents. It is therefore advisable to find out which application documents are required for your country before sending your application documents:

You acquired your general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) in the Federal Republic of Germany or at a German school abroad and are not a German citizen? Please apply online via our AlmaWeb application portal. Please note the information about applying online.
Please note that the IB Diploma does not count as a German qualification.
If you are a citizen of an EU or EEA country, please note the special regulations which apply to the degree programmes Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, veterinary Medicine, Psychology and Law as well as the admission-restricted B. A. and B. Sc. degree programmes.
Applications for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine
If you wish to apply for the first semester of study on one of these degree programmes, please apply via the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung. Please use this procedure regardless of whether you are already enrolled with us or not.
Applications for the first semester of study on degree programmes which are subject to the centralised study place allocation procedure (Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy) as well as for the first semester of study on programmes covered by the DoSV must be submitted via the portal of the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung. Application periods and deadlines may vary from those of our university and those of uni-assist. Please refer to the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung for specific dates.
In this respect, please note the changes to the selection criteria in the central allocation procedure.
Applications for Law as well as B. A. and B.Sc. programmes with restrictions on admission
The admission-restricted B. A. and B. Sc. courses as well as Law take part in the so-called dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV). You can find out which degree programs these are on the DoSV website. If you wish to apply for the first semester of study on one of these degree programmes, please register via the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung. You will receive identification numbers (BID, BAN), which you will need for your later application. Please then apply via
- uni-assist if you have a foreign educational qualification and are not yet enrolled at our university.
- AlmaWeb if you have a German Abitur or are already a student at Leipzig University.
You have completed your course at the Studienkolleg Sachsen and have received a conditional offer to study at our university? The correct application procedure depends on your desired degree programme:
Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry
- If you are a citizen of an EU or EEA country, please apply via the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung.
- If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU or the EEA, please visit the International Centre in person during its regular office hours to inform us of your preferred study programme.
Law as well as B. A. and B. Sc. programmes with restrictions on admission

If you intend to apply for Law or an admission-restricted B. A. or B. Sc. course, register with the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung. You will be given identification numbers (BID, BAN) which you will need for your further application.

All other degree courses
If you have completed your preparatory course at the Studienkolleg Sachsen and received a conditional offer to study at our university, please apply via our AlmaWeb portal. Then hand in the printed and signed application form to the International Centre.
Graduates who have not received a conditional offer to study at Leipzig
You have completed your course at the Studienkolleg Sachsen and have not received a conditional offer to study at our university? Please apply via the uni-assist service.
Changing to the degree programmes in Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry
- If you are a citizen of an EU or EEA country, please apply for the first semester of study via the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung.
- If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU or EEA, please visit the International Centre in person to register for the first semester of study on your desired degree programme.
Changing to the degree programmes Law, B. A. and B. Sc. programmes with restrictions on admission

Are you already enrolled with us and would like to change your field of study?
- Please apply online via our AlmaWeb application portal.
- Hand in the printed and signed application for enrolment or admission to the International Centre by the applicable deadline.
Are you already studying and would like to apply for a higher semester of study at our university? Browse our courses to find out which semester of study you can apply for in each case. If you would like credits you have already acquired to count towards your new studies, then you will need to have those credits recognised by the relevant body. The relevant body depends both on whether you acquired the credits abroad or in Germany and which degree programme you want to change to.

The credits you already have were acquired abroad?
For the Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry programmes you will need a credits form (Anrechnungsbescheid) from the competent Landesprüfungsamt. In this case, please contact the relevant address with a personal application and translated and certified copies of certificates:

The credits you already have were acquired in Germany?
Do you wish to switch to Leipzig University from another university in Germany and study on the same or a similar programme?
- You will need a credits form from the competent examination board at our university.
- Please indicate your previous degree programme and current semester of study and also submit an enrolment or study certificate from your last German university.
- Please also submit a document detailing periods of study from enrolment to the current semester (known in German as a Studienverlaufsbescheinigung).
Are you a student of medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine or dentistry and interested in switching to our university? Please include the following documents with your application:
- copy of your letter of admission from the other German university
- enrolment or study certificate from your last German university, indicating the degree course and semester of study, plus a Studienverlaufsbescheinigung (see above)
- proof of preclinical studies in the form of individual certificates (pursuant to the Licensing Regulations for Physicians) or a copy of a complete overview confirmed by the examination office
If you are applying for a clinical semester, you will also need a non-certified copy of proof that you have passed the Erster Abschnitt der Ärztlichen Prüfung (for Medicine), the Erster Abschnitt der Pharmazeutischen Prüfung (for Pharmacy), a certificate from the Naturwissenschaftliche Vorprüfung or the Zahnärztliche Vorprüfung (for Dentistry), or a certificate from the Vorphysikum or Physikum (for Veterinary Medicine). Individual certificates from preclinical studies are then not required.
Selection Procedure
Programmes with no admission restrictions
At our university we offer degree programmes with and without restrictions on admission.
For programmes with no admission restrictions, you will be admitted if you fulfil the formal admission requirements and successfully apply on time and in the prescribed manner.
You can apply to Leipzig University for a maximum of one unrestricted degree programme. Browse our courses to find out whether your desired degree programme is subject to restrictions on admission.
Programmes with admission restrictions
For some degree programmes we receive more applications than there are study places. These programmes have restrictions on admission and places are awarded through selection procedures based on fixed criteria. The selection procedures also depend on where you come from and which degree programme you are applying for.
You will be subject to the same criteria and selection procedure as German applicants. Please find out about the selection criteria for degree programmes with local restrictions on admission (NCU), with national restrictions on admission (NCZ), and degree programmes which participate in the ‘dialogue-oriented service procedure’ (DoSV).
Study places for your applicant group are allocated on the basis of a ‘quota’ for international students. At our university, this quota is:
- for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine: five per cent of available study places
- for all other programmes with admission restrictions: ten per cent of available study places.
The decision on whether to admit you is based on various criteria:
- Grade of your higher education entrance qualification (HZB)
Your HZB grade is the most important criterion for the allocation of study places. You will be informed of your grade as soon as uni-assist has checked your application and sent you a review report. If you are applying for a degree programme with admission restrictions, you will compete with all other applicants for a place on this degree programme. The better your HZB grade is compared to that of the other applicants, the greater your chance of being offered a place. - Nationality
As a rule, we can allocate a maximum of one place per country of origin for a degree course. Up to two places can be allocated for countries of origin whose population is at least as large as that of Germany. - Draw
If two or more candidates are equally eligible, admission is decided by drawing lots.
You can improve your HZB grade by taking the TestAS aptitude test. If you achieve a score of at least 90 Percentage, 0.2 points will be deducted from your grade. With both parts of the test, you can achieve a bonus of up to 0.4 points.
An aptitude test (Eignungsfeststellungsprüfung) may be required for your degree programme. To find out whether this is the case, check the overview of aptitude tests or ask at the relevant institute. Please note the registration deadlines for the aptitude tests.
Admission
We check your application documents as soon as you have submitted them in full, on time and in the prescribed manner and we have received them from uni-assist. Due to the large number of applications we receive, this process may take some time. We then carry out the selection procedure for degree programmes with restricted admissions before informing you whether your application was successful.
The letters are generated automatically and are valid without a seal or signature. We do not send these notification letters by post.
uni-assist forwards successful applications that meet the formal requirements to our International Centre. We then send you login details for our AlmaWeb study portal by email. There you will find your electronic letter of admission or rejection once we have processed your application and completed the selection procedure. We will inform you by email as soon as your letter is available.
- Log in to AlmaWeb using the details we sent you.
- In the menu, go to “Account” and then click on “Documents” on the left to retrieve your letter.
- Download your letter and print it.
Once the application and admission procedure comes to an end, we will make your electronic letter of admission or rejection available to you on AlmaWeb. We will inform you by email as soon as your letter is available.
- Log in to AlmaWeb using the details we sent you.
- In the menu, go to “Account” and then click on “Documents” on the left to retrieve your letter.
- Download your letter and print it.
The letters are generated automatically and are valid without a seal or signature. We do not send these notification letters by post.

Please check your AlmaWeb and email accounts regularly, including spam folders. If you read our email too late, you may miss the deadline for accepting your place at Leipzig University.
Have you been offered a place at Leipzig University? Congratulations! Before you can commence your studies, you must officially accept your place.
- Fill in the declaration of acceptance on the last page of your letter of admission.
- Send the declaration of acceptance as a PDF file to the email address provided by the specified deadline. You usually have two weeks to do this.
- As soon as we have received and processed your declaration of acceptance, you will see that the status of your application on AlmaWeb has changed. You will then receive further information on enrolment and paying your semester fee. Not until you have paid the semester fee and enrolled in person will your enrolment be complete.
