Jenny has rejected her tumultuous family and cut off communication, seeking a more ordered life far from her roots in the Bronx. And she's almost ready to commit to her longtime fiancé when her sister Lucy — the personification of all that Jenny has been trying to flee — surprises her at a critical time. Lucy and Jenny's combustible reunion brings both of them to unforeseen places, shattering and reconstructing the worlds they have both carefully constructed.

Film #3 among my 52 Films by Women 2017
Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino is Lucy, and Lucy is the Bronx drama queen who floods every frame of this picture with her whining, crying, disparaging, ridiculing, cussing, frustrating bravado. She's the diva, the fashionista. She's the woman scorned, the blabber mouth. She's the bull in the china shop. Her demands for attention are infuriating and her insensitivity is deplorable.
Bottomline: You gotta love her ... or else!
Writer-directer Nancy Savoca cleverly shows us Lucy on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but spoon-feeds us very slowly the personal problems that have led her to this point. We start off the Tuesday before Thanksgiving with Lucy's arrival by train at Union Square…

Nancy Savoca's film never quite allows it's audience to decide if it is OK to laugh or if we should feel ashamed. This thin line between dark comedy and dark drama is the gateway toward Savoca's point. The film seems a bit slight, but it lingers with you.
This is the kind of filmmaking it would be nice to see more of -- a realistic story about human damage. We are used to seeing movies about human damage, but it usually delivered in blunt doses leading to bleak ends. Or it is delivered with syrupy musical scores and amplified performances the lead to contrite and "quick happiness" endings.

It’s extremely difficult to realistically capture a borderline personality in film, but Nancy Savoca does it in Union Square when she aims her hand-held at Mira Sorvino (very good indeed) as she invades the upscale downtown city pad of her sister who has turned her back on her deeply troubled family and their Italian enclave in the Bronx (a well-modulated performance by Tammy Blanchard, especially when she lapses into her outer-borough accent). Memorable cameos by Patti Lupone and Michael Rispoli [I knew his wonderful mom!] greatly abet. Another excellent film by Ms. Savoca. (Double bill: Rachel Getting Married.)

Cool Jenny has left her Bronx upbringing behind, moved to Manhattan, gotten an ivy league boyfriend and started a trendy organic food business. All is well until her family comes crashing back into her life in the form of her sister, Lucy. Lucy is full of drama, ex-boyfriends, loud talk, smoking and drinking and she brings news that will rock Jenny's world. Most of the action takes place in Jenny's business/apartment, but there are a few New York street scenes to add some variety and context. Mira Sorvino and Tammy Blanchard are terrific as Lucy and Jenny. Union Square is well-written, beautifully acted, and realized in a close, intimate, personal and heartfelt style. This is a wonderful movie.

Film about two sisters who are completely different, one paying a surprise visit to the other who ostensibly has tried to forget her family. Drama ensues. Very well acted. Mira Sorvino isn't in nearly enough movies. She should be.

"Union Square" starts with Lucy(Mira Sorvino) arriving in Manhattan to do a little shopping right before Thanksgiving. After failing to get in touch with a friend, she shows up unannounced on her sister Jenny's(Tammy Blanchard) doorstep where she runs an organic food business out of her apartment and Lucy has to take off her high heel boots. So, Jenny warns her husband Bill(Mike Doyle) not to invite Lucy to spend the night.
Even thought it takes full advantage of New York City locations, that does not stop "Union Square" from being a rather shrill comedy for its first act. However, things do eventually get better. But that is at the cost of any sort of character consistency which might work in the television series "Intruders" but not here. That's a shame because in the right hands, this could have been a perceptive movie about the relationship between sisters and identity.

Slight but the strength of Sorvino and especially Blanchard elevates this to something of interest. Wisely, Nancy Savoca kept this one very short. At under 80 minutes it, gasp!, lags at times. A nice duet for these actresses.

Fantastic indie film from one of my favorite actresses, Mira Sorvino, here playing it completely neurotic as a Bronx woman trying to desperately to reconnect with her tightly wound sister living in the city. I absolutely loved the twist with Sorvino's character that completely reconfigures how I felt the film as a whole. Highly recommended :)
