      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Unbroken is undoubtedly well-intentioned, but it hits a few too many of the expected prestige-pic beats to register as strongly as it should.

Bryan S Too many missed pieces from the book and originating story. It tried, and what was good was great, but the rest was left for the imagination unfortunately. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Dale M Good story. Very touching. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Audience Member Get u outta bed the next day typa flick Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Jack M There’s a good story here, but it’s all to satisfied to just tell it simply, without significant performances, and will drown in a genre filled with much more brutal and powerful wartime depictions. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/23/23 Full Review Glenn G Lackluster American war film… or whatever it was. Great idea but poor execution. Kill 30 minute off this film and I guarantee it would have received better reviews. I'm a sucker for "real" true stories though and think this movie deserves a watch one time… A wild plot on what this man had to endure in real life, unfortunately this movie felt like he was tortured longer in the movie than in real life…. can't see myself watching it again unfortunately but not a "bad" movie. Filming wise this movie deserves 2 stars… but bringing light on what this man conquered deserves 5. Good watch if you haven't seen it once, unfortunately I wish the filming was executed better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/13/23 Full Review Derek M Unbroken makes the mistake that the book doesn't. Act 1 should be before the war, Act 2 the war, and act 3 after the war, which is a credit afterthought in the movie. Read the book because the full story is compelling, heart wrenching, and borders on unbelievable. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint Unbroken doesn't penetrate the surface of emotions, remaining a slightly detached, albeit respectful, representation of a potentially touching and inspiring true story. Aug 5, 2019 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online ... so painfully generic that one could probably copy the review of any derivative WWII film and paste it right here. Rated: C Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Claudia Puig The Asahi Shimbun GLOBE (Japan) Unbroken is an odyssey detailing a harrowing ordeal and insurmountable odds. But this polished story feels conventional, overly long and not sufficiently involving. [Full review in Japanese] Rated: 2/4 Dec 19, 2016 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Unbroken” is a competent and well-intentioned movie centered around an inspiring true story. Rated: 3/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film has been carefully constructed into a blind adoration instead of a worthy portrait; it captures events, but not people, not gradations. Rated: 2/4 Jul 13, 2022 Full Review Q.V. Hough Vague Visages "Jolie didn't make a bad movie, and 'Unbroken' might have even won Best Picture 20 years ago, but you can't throw the star under the bus -- especially in a biopic -- and let the antagonist destroy one of the most powerful scenes."
