Tutush I (1057-1095) was Emir of Damascus from 1079 to 1095, succeeding Abaaq al-Khwarazmi and preceding Beylerbey Duqaq of Damascus.
Biography[]
Tutush was born in 1057, one of the sons of Sultan Alp Arslan. In 1085, he seized Syria from his brother Malik Shah, who recaptured it a year later; he would reconquer Syria in 1094. Tutush was the emir of Damascus, ruling over a large realm that encompassed lands from southern Turkey to Aqaba in the Arabian Peninsula to the south. In 1095, he was slain in battle at Rayy, Iran, and his son Beylerbey Duqaq of Damascus succeeded him, leading to his brother Radwan of Aleppo revolting against him, fragmenting the Seljuks in Syria.
