A 52-year-old employee of a jewellery company carrying gold and diamonds collectively worth Rs 7 lakh was cheated of the consignment by two men who were “asking questions like investigators”. The Samta Nagar police have registered an FIR and are looking for the accused.

Tukaram Undare, the complainant, has been working with the jewellery company based out of Kandivli East for three years now. On September 27, he reported to work in the morning and was asked by his manager to go to the BKC Diamond Bourse with some papers. He was also asked to exchange gold with a merchant and pick up diamonds on his way back to work.
According to Undare's complaint, he went to Bandra station by train and submitted the papers at the BKC Diamond Bourse. Around 1.30pm, he went to a merchant in Bandra where he exchanged 40gm of gold on behalf of his employer. He then took a local train to Kandivli station and went to a seller in Shankar Gully in Kandivli West. His employer had given this seller 100 diamonds (10 carat each) for sale last week but now wanted it back. After carefully placing the box of diamonds next to the packet of gold in his bag, he started to walk down to his workplace in Kandivli East. "Although his employer had given him the auto-rickshaw fare, Undare decided to save the money and walk instead,” a police officer said.
He had reached a foot over bridge to cross from Kandivli West to East when two men on a bike “intercepted him”. They spoke in Marathi and asked if he had consumed anything. Undare said he had had tobacco. The men then asked whether he was carrying drugs in his bag and started inspecting it. They found cash, the packet of gold and the box of diamonds. Leaving the cash, they picked up the gold and diamonds. Undare tried to question them but the men simply asked him to walk ahead and meet their “sahib” in his car. Undare walked ahead but did not spot any car. The men had fled. Undare called up his manager and they decided to lodge a police complaint.

The case was registered on September 28 and Undare gave a detailed description of both the men. The police are examining CCTV footage to establish their identities.
