Dr. Tracy Fanara was born on February 10, 1989 near Buffalo, New York.
She was born with a condition called “blue baby syndrome” — also known as infant methemoglobinemia. It’s a condition that turns the skin blue and occurs due to a decreased amount of hemoglobin in the blood.

This condition may occur when babies are exposed to polluted sources of drinking water. Knowing that she may have been a victim of water pollution, Tracy has always been driven to protect anyone else from the same situation.
Another big life event that influenced her adult life happened when she was still living near Buffalo, New York. An environmental disaster in a local neighborhood, Love Canal happened where industries dumped toxins in the community.
She also blames this environmental disaster for the cancer clusters in the neighborhood and surrounding areas. Her mother had cancer at 28 and her best friend’s mother had Multiple Sclerosis in her 20s.

Dr. Tracy completed her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Florida. She continued in the same university for her Master of Engineering in Environmental Technology and then also her PhD in Environmental Hydrology and Water Resources Science.
Her hobbies include science communication, anything outdoors such as camping, hiking, kayaking and playing sports.

During her PhD, Tracy worked as an Engineer at CH2MHill. Her work included stormwater design and hydrologic modeling.
After completing her PhD, she was an independent contractor for the US Geological Survey and then worked at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium for over 5 years.
Currently, along with managing her own outreach online platform, Inspector Planet, she also works at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as a Coastal Modeling Portfolio Manager.
