Thinking of leasing a Toyota Corolla?

The U.S. News Best Price Program saves users an average of $1,824 off the MSRP, and a lower price equals lower monthly lease payments. That means you could see a savings of $90 a month on a 36-month lease.

Drive & Performance 5.9/10

The Corolla isn't especially thrilling to drive, but its small size and light steering make it easy to maneuver in crowded parking lots and tight urban environments. The Toyota's suspension is tuned for comfort, which affords a smooth ride that's sure to please occupants on long hauls.

The standard 2024 Corolla sedan and hatchback have one engine option: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. It comes paired with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). This engine is adequate for driving around town and making the occasional highway excursion, but it feels sluggish when pulling away from a stop and when passing or merging. Making the run from zero to 60 mph takes a leisurely 9 seconds, according to Toyota, and the engine tends to drone when the accelerator is pressed hard. On the plus side, the CVT is unobtrusive and mimics a traditional automatic fairly well. If you're looking for extra performance, go for the more powerful GR Corolla, which we review separately.

Fuel Economy 9.7/10

The 2024 Corolla gets good gas mileage for the compact car segment. Depending on configuration, the Corolla gets an EPA-estimated 30-32 mpg in the city and 38-41 mpg on the highway.

Interior 6.7/10

The interior design of the 2024 Corolla focuses on function over form. The cabin is well-constructed, ergonomic and fairly inoffensive, but many rivals' interiors feel more modern and upscale. Build materials are of good quality for the most part, but there are lots of hard plastics that are a reminder you're in a value-oriented car. The Corolla seats five people. Upfront, the seats are comfortable and supportive, and the available sport seats are effective in helping you stay put around tight curves thanks to their additional side bolstering. Head- and legroom is plentiful, as well. The back row is on the cramped side, and tall adults will likely feel constrained by the tight legroom.

The Corolla has below-average cargo room for the compact car class. The sedan has 13.1 cubic feet of trunk space, which is enough for stowing a few pieces of carry-on luggage or a large load of groceries. The rear seats fold down, which makes stowing longer items easier. The hatchback model has slightly more room, providing 17.8 cubic feet of space in the rear cargo area. The hatchback's folding rear seats and wide cargo opening make it easier to stow larger items.

Value 9.4/10

The 2024 Toyota Corolla has a good value rating for the compact car class. We determine value based on the vehicle's estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle's MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety 9.3/10

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2024 Corolla an overall rating of five out of five stars, and we like the base Corolla's standard safety features, which include forward collision warning, traffic-sign recognition and lane-keep assist.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. This LATCH system is among the easiest and most versatile to use.

Quality and Reliability 76.0/100

The 2024 Toyota Corolla does not have a predicted reliability score at the time of writing.

Critics’ Rating 7.1/10

The 2024 Toyota Corolla receives a critics' rating that is below average for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.

Pricing

How Much Is a 2024 Toyota Corolla?

The 2024 Toyota Corolla starts at around $21,900 for the base LE sedan, which offers a long list of standard features, including navigation and a Wi-Fi hot spot. The SE trim is available in both sedan ($24,340) and hatchback (around $23,355) models and gains niceties such as proximity keyless entry. The XSE, which costs around $27,000 for the sedan and $26,655 for the hatchback, gains a slew of extra features like synthetic leather upholstery and a moonroof.

Which is the best Toyota Corolla Model to Buy?

The base SE trim is the best choice for most shoppers, as it comes with a long list of standard features, including an 8-inch touch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward automatic emergency braking, push-button start and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. It also gets the best fuel economy of the nonhybrid lineup. We also recommend opting for the hatchback body style, as it brings extra versatility and practicality in a more stylish package for a small increase in price.

U.S. News Expert Review

John Vincent is the Senior Editor and Correspondent/Vehicle Testing for U.S. News Best Cars. He aims to help car shoppers find the right vehicle at the right price.

There’s an old saying that nobody has ever gotten in trouble with their parents when they buy a Toyota Corolla. While the latest generation of the long-popular Corolla sedan and hatchback might not be the most thrilling compact car you can buy, I think it’s still a rock-solid choice in a competitive segment. I tested a Corolla XSE hatchback, the sportiest model short of the exhilarating Toyota GR Corolla, with a 2023 as-tested price of $28,450 (including destination).

What We Like

The Corolla was one of the first compact cars to provide a full array of safety and driver-assistance technology, and I feel that the latest version of Toyota Safety Sense still beats most competitors in both breadth and unintrusive performance. Though not the best in the class, the Corolla’s infotainment system is straightforward and easy to use, offering advanced features such as wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. The hatchback I tested was fitted with Toyota’s NuLuxe leather substitute, which is about as good of a synthetic leather as you’ll find at any price point. We don’t yet have an official score for the 2024 Corolla’s predicted reliability, but it has a decades-long reputation in the marketplace for excellent quality and longevity, which helps its resale value when it’s time to move on.

What We Don’t Like

While it's assembled with excellent quality, the design and layout of the Corolla’s cabin are merely average for the class. It’s better than the Subaru Impreza, for example, but doesn’t hold a candle to the Honda Civic or Mazda3. I found the Corolla hatchback’s front seats to be comfortable and roomy enough for extended drives, but I’m sure most adults wouldn’t find the rear seats as accommodating (that’s not uncommon in the compact car class). All-in-all, the Corolla hatch just doesn’t feel as roomy to me as the Civic for passengers or cargo. Though the Corolla does have a reputation for quality, its warranty coverage is not as good as either the Hyundai Elantra or Kia Forte.

How It Drove

The Corolla XSE hatchback has a sporty look, with a black roof, 18-inch dark gray wheels and fog lights. Unfortunately, that’s where the sportiness ends, as it’s equipped with the same 169-horsepower four-cylinder engine that all Corollas offer (short of the potent GR Corolla). Toyota has done a good job of forcing the continuously variable automatic transmission to act like it’s shifting gears, but the vehicle still drones as it claws its way to highway speeds. On the flip side, though, the powertrain gets excellent gas mileage for a non-hybrid car, with my test car consistently reading in the mid-30-mpg range in a mix of highway and city driving.

Is the 2024 Toyota Corolla a Good Car?

Yes, the 2024 Corolla is a good car. It comes with a long list of standard tech and driver-assistance features, a sturdy cabin and a roomy and comfortable front row. The back seat is cramped, and cargo space isn't the best, but there's enough room for a weekend's worth of luggage or a large load of groceries. This little Toyota, which isn't designed to corner hard, has a sufficient but unexciting base engine. These traits are arguably balanced out by a comfortable ride and impressive fuel efficiency.

If you want a small car with more enjoyable driving dynamics, a long list of standard features and a slightly larger trunk, the Hyundai Elantra is worth a look. The Honda Civic is a top-ranked compact car that has a nicer interior and is more fun to drive than the Corolla, but it has a lackluster base engine. The Mazda3 is a good alternative if you don't mind sacrificing some cargo and passenger room for sporty handling and a nicer interior. The Mazda3, like the Toyota, is also available as a more cargo-friendly hatchback model.

There's also the Toyota Corolla Hybrid, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross Hybrid and performance-tuned GR Corolla. We review each car separately.

2023 vs. 2024 Toyota Corolla: What's the Difference?

The Corolla Nightshade Edition package returns for 2024. Like previous iterations, it includes the SE trim's standard features and adds unique black and bronze exterior styling elements. Otherwise, there are no major differences between the 2023 and 2024 Corolla models.

Here are the key changes for the Toyota Corolla over the last few years:

  • 2024: Nightshade Edition trim package returns
  • 2023: refreshed exterior styling; updated infotainment system; GR Corolla performance hatchback debuted; L and XLE trims and 1.8-liter engine discontinued
  • 2022: no notable changes
  • 2021: Android Auto became available
  • 2020: sedan fully redesigned with revamped interior and exterior styling; Apple CarPlay made standard; more powerful base and available engines

2024 Toyota Corolla Versus the Competition

Toyota Corolla vs. Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is one of our top-ranked small cars and for good reason. It comes with plenty of standard tech and driver-assistance features and an upscale cabin with good fit and finish. It's more fun to drive than the Corolla, and like the Toyota, it's available as a hatchback. Both the Corolla and Civic have lackluster base engines that won't inspire any joyrides, but — also like the Toyota — the Honda has a performance-oriented model that's a blast to take around corners. If you're looking for a good compact car, the Civic is a must-see.

Toyota Corolla vs. Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra has a lot in common with the Corolla. Both come with value-packed sets of standard features, fuel-efficient base engines and well-built cabins. The Toyota feels a bit more upmarket inside than the Hyundai, but the Elantra has a slightly lower base MSRP than the Corolla and offers more entertaining handling dynamics.
