Family movies similar to Princess Bride, Willow, Time Bandits, NeverEnding Story, or the Dark Crystal?

REQUESTING

No sexual jokes or nudity!!!!

I’m looking for movies to add to my retro fantasy adventure movie marathon. It can be from the 70s-90s, maybe the 2000s if it’s really good. Thanks!

Labyrinth

Good one.

Return to Oz, also. It’s scary reputation is a bit overblown.

Obviously DRAGONHEART and EXPLORERS are often forgotten. DRAGONSLAYER is good too but a little scary. The original CLASH OF THE TITANS should be fine.

Last Starfighter

Thank you!! Is Explorers a bit childish? Or is it still enjoyable for adults despite the child cast, like the Goonies?

Dragon Slayer, dragon heart, labyrinth, and Return to Oz are definitely going on my list!!

u/N-Finite avatar

Explorers is more from that same time period as the Goonies where children's entertainment was a bit more adult and similar to an older sensibility.

Its scary reputation is a bit overblown.

It’s got a reputation for traumatizing xennials when they were children, not so much for being scary.

Goonies

Adventures of Baron Munchausen

Edit: I forgot Baron Munchausen has nudity thx those that pointed it out

Adventures of Baron Munchausen has boob in it.

But it’s tastefully done, mimicking Boticelli’s Birth of Venus.

I'm not saying it's not, but the OP was pretty clear on the no nudity.

[Edit: and the whole King of the Moon scene with his body humping the Queen is definitely sexual innuendo that OP is looking to avoid.]

I understand, I enjoyed the movie when I was growing up. My mind didn’t register the sexual stuff back then.

Krull (1983)

Legend (1985)

Looks good except that devil in Legend might give me nightmares Lol!!!

Just remember that's it's really Tim Curry and he's a wonderful delight of a person!

Oh my gosh, Tim curry is the one in that costume?!?!?!?? And I thought he was scary as a clown! He’s frickin awesome. Can’t wait to watch that

And you get to see a VERY young Tom Cruise

Liam Neeson made some weird movies early in his career 😂

Love that one, though

You could try The Black Cauldron and The Last Unicorn. Both are animated films from the early 80s. Secret of Nimh might work too.

The tree boobies 😆

Stardust.

While this is a unique request, I think it's worth mentioning that there was a post 6 hours ago, or so, that might have something for you. Somebody requested movies similar to Alice in Wonderland and I've already seen some overlap here. Here's a link to that post.

Honey I Shrunk The Kids (1989)

Honey I Blew Up The Kid (1992)

The Witches (1990)

Dick Tracy (1990)

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)

u/Opus-the-Penguin avatar

Dragonslayer (1981). Warning: there is a swimming scene where you see a guy's butt as he dives into the water and, a little later, the outline of a nude female underwater. Both instances are quite brief and not at all graphic or sexual.

Thanks for the warning! As long as it’s brief and not sexual that’s fine. Is there a lot of creepiness between the king and a girl throughout the movie, or just one brief scene? I’m going off the parent’s guide warning..

u/Opus-the-Penguin avatar

I don't recall a lot of creepiness, but it's been a few years.

Ok that’s good then. Ty!!!

The 5000 Fingers of Dr T

(Animated ok?) Secret of NIMH

9

u/Alternative_Effort avatar

"The 5000 Fingers of Dr T" had to have been made with the aid of a psychedelic

u/troerwei avatar

If animated is OK you also have The Black Cauldron and The Lord of the Rings

Legend.

My first thought was Legend. Tom Cruise with his original teeth! I can never decide which cut I like best. I wish Ridley actually had made a director’s cut of it…

But anyway… Here to specify that it’s the Tom Cruise Lefend not the Tom Hardy one 😬

Can I ask, is there a LOT of romance going on in the movie? It looks really good but I don’t want the main focus to be the relationship. Is it like 80% adventure and 20% romance?

The romance is almost incidental to what's going on; most of it is "saving the princess"

Oh ok, so they like fall in love and then the movie is spent trying to save her? Ok that’s fine, thank you!!

Pretty much, yes.

Iron Giant

Bridge to Terabithia.

It is traumatizing tho. Don't say I didn't warn you.

I watched it as a kid. But haven’t since. I will definitely be rewatching!

A few decades off from the examples but yeah that shit was rough

u/graveybrains avatar

I read the book in 4th or 5th grade and its haunted me ever since. The movie is on my Nope List with Grave of The Fireflies.

Just rewatched it an hour ago and I’m still trying to recover. I don’t remember it being that sad 😥😢 many tears were shed

I know pat pat.

The Phantom Tollbooth is a sweet fantasy that goes from live action to animated and has a crazy tale involving STEM concepts, philosophy, music, the friends we make along the way...lol check it out though. (Also a great kids book by Norton Juster with illustrations by the incomparable Jules Feiffer.)

All five Mythica movies. Crowd funded, incredibly well done heroic sword and sorcery movies. No sex or nudity. Heroic quests. Overcoming evil. Humor. Adventure. Available free through several streaming services.

2001: A space Odyssey

Not getting the connection on that one. It’s not much of an adventure flick, more of a slow, cerebral head trip. With extreme emphasis on slow.

I’ve seen it. I loved it, but not really the same vibe as the movies I mentioned. It’s a great film though
