Three Days of the Condor - Film Noir or Spy Flick? Both?

I have a weird attraction for this 1975 gem. I watched it again today after several years.

Music, cityscape and intrigue say neo film noir.

Except for the scene where Turner (Redford) says goodbye to Kathy (Runaway).

But that music...

It's not noir (and it would be a neo-noir if it qualified fyi).

It's a paranoia/conspiracy thriller, like the Pakula movies.

Conspiracy or political thriller. It could be argued as a neo-noir but I don't personally consider it as such.

I've never really thought of it as noir.

It's just that the way the shots are blocked and the story arc sends a noir vibe watching it now.

The scenes in Kathy's flat reinforced that. As did Joe and Jobert's scenes.

Max Von Sydow and John Houseman are fantastic . Houseman saying..."thank (slight pause) you".

And Sydney Pollack ain't exactly a piker.

"Runaway"? Nope, Dunaway is her name.

I think it is more of a spy film filtered through the 70s lens of cynicism. In the end, Redford takes the story to the papers. I don't think the protagonist of a film noir would have considered that a useful step.

I love this movie so much. Seems to be kinda under appreciated. It’s a nonstop white knuckle thrill ride from beginning to end. Not really noir, but it’s one of the best political/paranoid/conspiracy thrillers ever imo.

Agree.

Absolutely love the elevator scene with Redford and Von Sydow.

No dialogue? No problem!

Noir has no strict definition notwithstanding the preoccupation of this thread with determining whether a movie is noir. It was a post-facto label applied to a miscellany of films largely from the black and white era; no definitive defintion was ever formulated, just a laundry list of traits, none of which were "required" and no movie had them all. Later films continued to have some or many of of these traits, often with more deliberate intent to be within the genre/tradition/category in reaction to its having been articulated and formulated.

This is an astonishing film. "This is the Colonel".

Joe Turner: I'd like to go back to New York.

Joubert: You have not much future there. It will happen this way....

I believe it’s noir. The cinematography has the telltale sings for me: shows! One of my top 5 favorite movies!

You're not alone here.
