Hired, fired, retired: These seafood executives changed jobs in April

Several seafood executives were on the move in April. Here's a roundup of the biggest shifts.

April was full of executive changes at global seafood companies. Here is our roundup of the biggest shifts last month.

Longtime Mowi communications director departing

Ian Roberts, director of communications for Mowi Scotland, Ireland and Canada, is stepping down from his position after 31 years with the group, the executive told IntraFish in early April.

Roberts officially leaves Mowi on Aug. 1.

Seafood industry veteran joins US surimi seafood maker

Lott most recently served as the vice president of global sales for offshore warmwater aquaculture company Forever Oceans.

Previous to his role at Forever Oceans, Lott served as vice president of global sales at Pacifico Aquaculture, a producer of ocean-raised striped bass.

He has also served as vice president of sales for North America for Regal Springs Tilapia, as well holding a leadership position with Harvest Select Catfish.

Bumble Bee names former StarKist executive as CEO

Bumble Bee Seafoods appointed Andrew Choe, the former head of rival US-based canned tuna producer StarKist, as its new CEO.

Choe, whose appointment at San Diego, California-based Bumble Bee became effective Apr. 1, spent more than a decade at StarKist, including eight years as CEO.

He was appointed to his new position by Bumble Bee Chairman Jerry Chou, who has been serving as interim CEO since the departure in July 2022 of predecessor Jan Tharp.

Cod farming group loses finance chief

Arne Kristian Hoset, chief financial officer (CFO) of Norwegian cod farmer Norcod, resigned from the company after only one year in the role.

In a statement to the stock exchange, Norcod said Hoset decided to resign to take a new position in another company and industry.

CEO steps down from Aqua-Spark-backed aquaculture feed innovator

The CEO of Norwegian hatchery feed innovator Molofeed resigned in April.

Marcell Boaventura held the position for just over three years, during which time the Aqua-Spark backed company developed processes and products, scaled production and built an R&D aquaculture facility in Brazil.

Tilapia giant appoints company veteran as CEO

Brazilian agro-industrial giant C.Vale appointed company veteran Edio Jose Schreiner as its CEO, a newly created post under a modernization drive at the cooperative.

C.Vale is Brazil's second largest tilapia producer behind rival cooperative Copacol.

Canned seafood giant Princes names new CEO

Mitsubishi-owned food and drink group Princes, a major player in the shelf-stable seafood category in the UK, named Simon Harrison as its new CEO in April, replacing longtime executive Cameron Mackintosh.

Since Harrison's appointment as deputy managing director last June, Princes said it has seen growth across all key business units and has also successfully acquired a number of major strategic customers, which the business said has led to record trading performance over the last 12 months.

Global Seafood Alliance names new CEO

The Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) named Mike Kocsis as its new CEO, replacing longtime leader Wally Stevens.

Kocsis, who has extensive seafood industry experience spanning two decades, joined the organization in April 2022 as chief systems officer to oversee certification operations and information technology and was most recently promoted to chief strategy officer last August.

Kocsis’ career includes leadership roles at leading seafood brands such as High Liner Foods, King & Prince Seafood and Gorton’s Seafood.

US wholesaler names new CFO

US seafood wholesaler Stavis Seafoods named Mark Emmith its new CFO in April.

Emmith replaces Mary Fleming, who will be leaving Stavis in June after more than 40 years at the company.

Nordic Halibut appoints new CFO

Nordic Halibut appointed Thomas Scheele Berg as its next chief financial officer, effective Aug. 1, the company said in April.

Berg, an investment manager, will join the Norwegian halibut farmer from the investment firm Fred.Olsen Investments, where he has experience in mergers and acquisitions and both equity and debt capital markets.

He will replace outgoing CFO Kenneth Meyer, who announced in January he was stepping down to pursue new career opportunities.

Norway names new fisheries minister

Norway appointed Marianne Sivertsen Naess as its new minister of fisheries.

Naess was elected as a representative to Norway's Parliament, the Storting, in 2021 and has since 2022 been chair of the energy and environment committee.

The appointment makes Naess the sixth minister of fisheries since January 2020.

Outgoing minister Cecilie Myrseth was appointed to the job last October following a government reshuffle where Bjornar Skjaeran was ousted from the position.

Aquaculture equipment maker names new CEO

Aquaculture equipment supplier Billund Aquaculture named Kristoffer Lund as its new CEO in Denmark.

Billund specializes in developing land-based fish farms using recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) technology.

Lund was previously the group technical director of Vestas Aircoil, a Danish manufacturer of air coolers, intercoolers and cooling towers. He joins Billund with broad experience in organizational transformation, the company said.

A new CEO takes the wheel at land-based salmon farmer Gigante

Kjell Lorentsen was appointed CEO of Norwegian land-based salmon farmer Gigante Salmon as the company tries to tackle a substantial hike in capital requirements.
Lorentsen has been acting CEO since Helge Albertsen was removed from the role in March in response to the cost increases.

Tilapia genetics firm names new CEO

Tilapia breeding and genetics group GenoMar Genetics named Gustavo Bozano as its new CEO.

He will start in his new position on May 1, the company said in a statement.

Bozano has more than 30 years of experience in the Brazilian aquaculture industry, where he has held various technical, managerial and leadership positions.

Top executive departs Stavis Seafoods

Soren Dalsager, interim CEO of US seafood distributor Stavis Seafoods, has left the company as part of a management reshuffle.
He will be replaced by Juan Lopez Martinez, the company's current vice president of purchasing, Stavis said in a statement sent to IntraFish.

Dalsager has also left his post as the CEO of Profand USA, the US division of Spanish seafood giant Grupo Profand, which owns Stavis.

Fortune Fish executive makes quick exit to retailer BJ's

Fortune Fish & Gourmet's new vice president of frozen seafood left the group to join discount retail giant BJ's Wholesale Club.
Steve Gwozdz, who has had a lengthy career in seafood and protein purchasing with major retailers, left Fortune Fish after just six months with the Boston-based group, he wrote on his LinkedIn page.

Gwozdz held roles at US retailers Giant Food, Price Chopper and Stop & Shop in his nearly 20-year career in the sector.
