"Here comes Thomas!"
— Thomas' catchphrase.

Thomas is a blue tank engine who lives and works on the Island of Sodor and is the North Western Railway's number 1 engine.

Biography

Thomas is a blue tank engine that lives on Sodor with his friends. His best friends are Percy, Diesel, Nia and Kana; the five share a roundhouse together called Tidmouth Sheds. He also seems to view Gordon as a father figure.

Personality

Thomas is a cheeky but hard-working engine who is always there to help his friends. He's always willing to keep a "Thomas Promise" and works hard to make up for any mistakes he's made. He simply wants to be the best little #1 tank engine he can be.

Technical Details

Basis

In the original series, Thomas was based on a London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) Class E2 0-6-0T, particularly the second batch of locomotives built with extended side-tanks, built between 1915-1916. In All Engines Go, Thomas heavily differs from his original appearance, though retains a similar outline.

Livery

Thomas is painted blue with red and yellow lining. His number (1) is painted on his side tanks in yellow with red lining. He has a red running board and bufferbeams with black buffers.

Trivia

  • Earlier promotional images for All Engines Go! feature a slightly different design for Thomas' whistle, with the two valves being closer together like in the original show.
  • Since his last appearance in the original show, Thomas has undergone quite a few visual changes:
    • He now has a flat running board, much like he does in the Railway Series starting from Branch Line Engines onwards and also from the Engine Driver Segments starring Mr. Perkins as his cake in the Splish, Splash, Splosh! DVD release.
    • His number "1" is modified to look the same as his Carry-All with rolling wheels.
    • His face was modified to look younger.
    • His nose is now round.
    • His triangular eyebrows were changed to normal ones.
    • He is much shorter in size and length.
    • His footplate is now completely red.
    • His whistles are much larger and set further apart.
    • His smokebox frames now reach the ends of his wheel arches.
    • His cab doors were removed.
    • The handrails on his cab have been removed.
    • His siderods have been removed.
    • He now only has rivets on his smokebox, similar to the twenty-third series from the original series.
    • He returned to his similar first to twenty-second series state but greatly modified, meaning that the steps on his tanks from the twenty-third to twenty-fourth series were removed.
    • He now has blue irises.
    • His wheel splashers and side tanks are now meshed together but most of the merchandise predicted him to have them meshed together.
    • His filler caps on his tanks were removed. Instead, the top panels on his tanks open up when he fills up with water.
    • He now only has one cab window on each side, like the original E2 class.
    • His lamp irons have been removed.
    • His dome is closer to his cab.
    • He only has three boiler bands as opposed to six.
    • His stepladders were removed.
    • His brake pipe has been removed.
    • His bunker and dome now have a lighter tint of blue.
    • His bunker is now shorter.
    • The red lining on the back of his bunker has been removed.
    • His tail-lamp has been lowered.
    • He has both a knuckle coupler and a chain link coupler. Additionally, he can detach it at will.
    • The top of his bunker now has a black door at the top which can open up. This was first shown in the third season episode, Percy's Little Problem.
  • As seen in the storyboards for the test animation and An UnbeLEAFable Day, Thomas is allergic to hay, making him the first engine to have an allergic reaction.
  • Thomas, as the title character, is the only character to appear in every episode of the series.
    • Additionally, he was originally announced as being the lead character of every episode. However, this rule has most likely been disbanded, as from Nia's Perfect Plan onwards, Thomas has occasionally been put into a secondary/supporting role, allowing other characters to take the lead role themselves. Although, there have been plenty of episodes where characters other than Thomas have major leading roles, even before the aforementioned episode was released.
  • According to the prototype of his character file in Meet the Engines, Thomas first arrived on Sodor painted green, just like how he did in the 2015 CGI special The Adventure Begins.
  • Unlike all past iterations, Thomas likes wearing his snowplow.
  • Thomas has the most voice actor changes of any character, having had three within a single season.
