This Is Gold... Or Is It?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 7, 2018
Disky's 2004 release of 'This Is Gold' is not a bad set, and boasts plenty of rarer Fats Domino's songs across 3 x CDs.
With this in mind, why is this only 4*? As much as there is to enjoy, there's a few points that I'd like to bring to your attention.
Point #1 - There is a lack of his early Imperial recordings, so very little in the way of his hit recordings. A few do appear, but overall this looks at his work AFTER he left Imperial Records. There is no mention of this on the box set. Even some of his hit Imperial recordings featured on here aren't his original versions which aren't noted on here (from memory, 'Blueberry Hill' and 'I'm Walkin'' to name a couple).
This isn't all bad though as this material is easily sourced elsewhere, but to the casual listener it's not that obvious.
Point #2 - There are no real sleeve notes anywhere within the CD sets. Songwriting credits are listed but there's no record numbers, chart notations, dates etc.
As the tracks have already been provided on the Amazon page, they won't be repeated.
Positive points however, Fats Domino sounds good and there's lots of rarer recordings on here and even a few instrumentals thrown in. Many feature very little on CDs so Disky have done well to compile these, it's just a shame that a little more care with details such as notes could have made this more 'complete'.
So yes, credit does have to go to Disky as many of these recordings are sought after and rarer, so with such a cheap price it's a good one to have in your collection. It might not be the most essential set for the points noted above, but it's definitely not a bad one to have.
One final note... Disky have released many in their 'This Is Gold' collection and many are in similar manner... lots of music, little in the way of sleeve notes etc. but many are at a cheap price and feature lots of lesser-known recordings not often found on 'greatest hits' compilations. I've found this out with their Bobby Darin and Guy Mitchell boxes.
