Product Description
They All Laughed (DVD) New York's Odyssey Detective Agency is hired by two different clients to follow two women suspected of infidelity. Ladies' man John Russo (Ben Gazzara) trails Angela Niotes (Audrey Hepburn), the elegant wife of a wealthy Italian industrialist, while Charles Rutledge (John Ritter) and Arthur Brodsky follow Dolores Martin (Dorothy Stratten), the beautiful young wife of a jealous husband. Their respective cases are complicated when John falls for Angela, and Charles falls for Dolores.

Director Peter Bogdanovich started off the 1980s with this trifle: a sweet romantic valentine to a New York City where bumbling detectives fall in love with their targets. This is a Big Apple where country music blares, taxi drivers are gorgeous models, sass permeates, and Ben Gazzara embodies all that is cool. He is the chief hound in the blue-collar Odyssey Detective Agency specializing in observing wives for their suspicious husbands. John Ritter, who became famous four years later with Three's Company, plays the equally daft Charles, a man who literally falls head over heels with cutie-pie Dolores (Dorothy Stratten). Gazzara falls for a socialite played by Audrey Hepburn (in her last starring role). The veteran actors are at their movie-star best. The film has a casual style and charm, another change of pace for Bogdanovich who was still trying to find the magic of his first films (including The Last Picture Show and What's Up, Doc?). He fills the screen with gorgeous females including Patti Hansen as an all-knowing cab driver, Colleen Camp as a country singer, and Stratten, the former Playboy Playmate of the Year. However, if there is a big surprise, it's co-writer/producer Blaine Novak as the long-haired, roller-skating detective Arthur, who has a tart remark for everyone and nearly steals every scene.
The film ran into trouble in post-production when Stratten, who was now an item with Bogdanovich, was murdered by her estranged husband. The eerie similarities with the movie were another reason no studio wanted to release it. Bogdanovich funded it himself and when it bombed, the artistic and personal loss resulted in the director not making a film until Mask, nearly five years later. --Doug Thomas

Recommended to all Audrey fans! =)
Andrey Hepburn as Angela Niotes gives this movie a lot of glamour and class. By this time, she was not making many movies, so it was amazing that the director, Peter Bogdanovich, was able to obtain her for this film. Audrey would make two more movies after "They All Laughed" before she passed away in 1989.
Another actor that is gone was John Ritter as the endearingly bumbling private eye Charles Rutledge. He and Dorothy had nice onscreen chemistry and was delightful in his role. Ritter's role was based on Bogdanovich himself, so it was no surprise his character ends up with Dorothy's character (Dolores Martin) in the end. This movie was a sweet love letter to Dorothy by Peter, since the two were having an affair and had marital plans after her divorce from Snider was finalized. Peter released the movie after Dorothy died, but it did not do well at the box office.
A pleasant surprise was Patti Hansen as the tomboyish Sam the Cab Driver. She was very good in this role and I'm surprised she didn't get cast in more movies. Ben Gazzara was good as the tough, cynical private detective who attracted many beautiful women. He falls in love with Angela Niotes, but it was he who ended up with a broken heart this time around.
Colleen Camp brought tremendous energy and vitality to this movie. She played Christy Miller, a country-western singer. Colleen also did all of her own singing; she is a talented singer. She did release three songs with John Barry.
This movie is billed as a comedy, but initially I found the plot hard to follow at times. It was rather uneven in parts, combining low-key comedy with romance, zany farce and some drama. I'll admit after watching this movie several times, it grew on me. But I can also see why it was not a hit for Peter Bogdanovich. The humor was perhaps a bit too subtle and uneven for a romantic comedy. Still, it's a nice film to have for the nostalgia factor of seeing actors who are no longer with us.

filmed in NYC which becomes a character in the movie. It is also a movie featuring
Dorothy Stratton who was killed just before this movie was released. If you follow the
thread of the movie you find it ends with a twist.
This is a fun film and an excellent transfer. Blu-Ray soon?

This seemingly forgotten film from class act Peter Bogdonovich (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon) is a real unexpected delight. It starts out like a thriller, where you have absolutely no idea what is going on. It turns into a 30s screwball comedy, though with a beautifully rendered early eighties sensibility (pot, sex and roller disco!). And ends up being a very satisfying romantic comedy drama.
John Ritter (The Waltons' preacher) is fantastically natural as Peter Bogdanovich's alter ego, who falls in love with Dorothy Stratten (who was tragically murdered by her husband before the film was released). Ben Gazarra is as tragically world-weary and charismatic as his role in Saint Jack [DVD ] (also highly recommended). Audrey Hepburn is as delightful as ever in one of her last screen appearances.
And if you enjoy the film I would thoroughly recommend the DVD extra behind-the-scenes interview of Peter B by quirky film-maker and fan Wes Anderson, which tells the story of the real goings-on between the actors, and how the film was shot guerrilla-style, by talented cinematographer Robby Müller.
region 1 which I didn't notice.Thinking buying in UK it would work here.
So I am very disappointed that I still have never seen this film..
The story, a rather disjointed caper, doesn't seem to know exactly what it wants to be: Mystery or romcom or screwball comedy. For me it never quite came together and at times it reminded me of one of Woody Allen's less memorable films. But even at his worst Allen does whimsy better than Bogdanovich here. However, it kept me entertained on a slow night in. If you don't expect too much it may do the same for you.
The DVD itself is fine. It's a Region 1 DVD (and is clearly marked as such in the product description), so check you have a compatible device before ordering. The run time of the film is 115 mins. Extra features included:
- Commentary with director Peter Bogdanovich
- Director to Director: A conversation with Peter Bogdanovidh and Wes Anderson
