I watched it. I wouldn't say it's going out its way to insult the faith. But also doesn't really try very hard to treat it with reverence. It's neither pro-Catholic, nor anti-Catholic. See it more like the Catholic Church is used as a backdrop to tell a story about human characters that are caught in the personal and interpersonal struggles of living in the power hierarchy of the Roman-Catholic Church.

It's okay as a show, it's decent, nothing special. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it just because you are a Catholic or interested in the Catholic faith, because then it will leave you probably unfulfilled.

This was my impression, too. I only watched a few episodes, and it was just weird. There were some scenes with Jude Law where I was cheering him on, other scenes that pissed me off, and others that were just… odd.

I watched it and I found it exceptional. There are some incongruences with catholic beliefs, but at the end of the story you will love it if you watched it without prejudices. Actually I had them, but after watching the fourth episode I was really surprised for some of the words said by Pius XIII. The second part of the story is really wonderful, the first part could make you believe is the usual anti-Catholic series.

I also think that The Young Pope can be better understood as Catholics.

The paper of the Vatican, l’Osservatore Romano, wrote a recension about it, and it was quite positive. You can search it and read it.

PS: the second season, The New Pope, is nothing special, except for the seventh episode. My comment is referring to the first season, The Young Pope.

It has a whole bunch of sex scenes. I would encourage you to avoid it.

This alone would make it impermissible for a catholic To watch.

Surprised to see all the replies after learning this.

There are lots of movies with nude scenes. We shouldn’t watch anything then, included art.

I recommend it, as long as you understand this is not a documentary

1st season was a fun watch. 2nd season was trash.
