C E L E B R AT I N G 100 YEARS OF R O YA L P A T R O N A G E

GILES COOPER CHAIRMAN After all that the country has been through over the past couple of years, it feels great to once again be able to say, ‘Welcome to the Royal Variety Performance!’ On behalf of the Royal Variety Charity, ITV Studios and the Royal Albert Hall, I’d like to thank everyone for attending this evening and extend a very warm welcome to TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with huge thanks for supporting this annual British Institution once again - it’s so very much appreciated by everyone in the entertainment industry. 2021 marks a very special year for us at the Royal Variety Charity, as it marks exactly 100 years of patronage from the reigning monarch, in an unbroken line since 1921 when King George V became our first Patron. 2021 also marks 100 years since the show has been called the Royal Variety Performance; the two previous shows in 1912 and 1919 having been staged as ‘one-offs’ and titled Royal Command Performances. It’s so fitting that we should return to the Royal Albert Hall during their 150th anniversary year and be a part of their own historic celebrations and I’d like to thank Lucy Noble and Dave Gamble for their fantastic help and assistance - I can’t believe it was as far back as 2018 when we first met up and discussed planning this evening! I’d also like to thank the whole team at Lifted Entertainment/ ITV Studios, together with my fellow voluntary Officers, Vice-Chairman Phil Dale and Treasurer Ian Freeman and most especially Honorary Life-President Laurie Mansfield, for all his help and assistance. Above all, I’d like to thank Her Majesty The Queen, for her unwavering support as our sole-Patron. Lastly, but by no means least, a very big thank you to all of the artists performing in tonight’s show, all of whom have donated their services in support of the Royal Variety Charity. I’m sure you’ll ‘do us all proud’ and thank you so much for committing your valuable time and energy to this evening’s production. So, without further ado, please sit back and enjoy what will undoubtedly be a fabulous night of entertainment.

C E L E B R AT I N G 100 YEARS OF R O YA L P A T R O N A G E

LAURIE MANSFIELD LIFE-PRESIDENT At last!! We are back with a full blooded Royal Variety Performance in our new home the Royal Albert Hall proudly celebrating the 100th anniversary of our Royal Patronage. We owe an enormous debt to the support that the Royal Family have given to this charity…indeed it is not an exaggeration to say that without this support our charity would not exist. As we celebrate our new long term contract with ITV I would like to acknowledge the support, commitment and enthusiasm of Fiona Clark and her team in what has been an incredibly difficult 12 months. As you can imagine this has been a traumatic year for the charity and Royal Variety Performance. We are all incredibly proud of all of the hard work and commitment of those who put so much love and care in to the purpose of our charity, particularly at Brinsworth House, and so my thanks and gratitude go to our Matron Tatree Preece RGN and all of her remarkable staff at Brinsworth. Our charity has never been so needed and so essential as it has been over the last 12 months. I would also like to thank the members of our Executive Committee and my fellow Trustees who have managed to meet throughout the pandemic to ensure that we are able to help and support when needed. On a personal level I would like to acknowledge our Chairman Giles Cooper who has worked tirelessly to ensure the success of tonight’s show. We give our grateful thanks to TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, their presence here tonight is very much appreciated. And finally and most importantly thank you all for your support and attendance because without you there would be no Royal Variety Performance.

2021 marks a very special year for the Royal Variety Charity, as it marks exactly 100 years of patronage from the reigning Monarch and also 100 years since the title of the charity’s annual fundraiser has been the Royal Variety Performance. The Royal Variety Charity (RVC), originally called the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund, was established in 1908 and shortly after in 1912, the first Royal fundraiser took place in aid of those who had hit hard times working in the entertainment industry. His Majesty King George V and Her Majesty Queen Mary agreed to attend a ‘Royal Command Performance’ at the Palace Theatre in London’s Cambridge Circus in aid of the RVC and its proposed plans to build an extension to its Care Home for elderly entertainers, Brinsworth House. This first staging was a lavish occasion with over 3 million roses draped around the auditorium The Stage said that “whilst the show would undoubtedly enjoy financial success for the entertainment industry’s charity, this was as little compared with the fact that Royalty, in the persons of the King and his Consort, have officially set their seal of approval upon the work of that large body of people who are to be found in what is comprehensively termed the variety profession.”

There was a large chorus portraying the Allies and the Colonies. In one scene, six hundred clothed in white, fanned out from a large centre-stage flight of steps. Four trumpeters from the 1st Life Guards blew a fanfare, before Sir Edward Elgar conducted music arranged by the appropriately named Mr Dove! Then from the top of the white steps at the rear of the stage, appeared Ethel Hook dressed as Britannia, to herald the singing of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, before leading the National Anthem. The previous Royal Command Performances in 1912 and 1919, although huge successes, had been ‘one-offs’, but the 1921 show was the first of the more regular stagings.

He added that the Monarch, or a senior member of the Royal Family, would attend an annual performance, in aid of Brinsworth House and the Royal Variety Charity, once a year thereafter, to demonstrate the family’s love and support for the entertainment industry and its associated charity.

continued… …Buckingham Palace that the show should ‘clearly reflect all areas of showbusiness popular amongst the masses of the time.’ Hence, a variety of entertainment, including music - of all genres, comedy, music-hall, speciality acts - rather than for it be incorrectly perceived as one reflecting the Royal Family’s own specific choice of artistes. It was the brainchild of Harry Marlow, Chairman of the Royal Variety Charity, to establish a regular series of shows, and his idea was warmly welcomed a Buckingham Palace. Indeed, HM King George V, a great fan of variety, agreed to become Life-Patron of the charity and decreed in the same year, that the Royal Variety Performance would become an annual event. Her Majesty Queen Mary joined her husband the King, as joint Patron of the charity, shortly afterwards. King George V added that ‘the Monarch or a senior member of the Royal Family, would attend an annual Performance, in aid of Brinsworth House and the Royal Variety Charity, once a year thereafter, to demonstrate the Royal family’s love and support for the entertainment industry and its associated charity.’ There were fears that the public might not respond so well and at first tickets sold slowly. But the timely announcement of Princess Mary’s engagement to Viscount Lascelles and the news that their first public appearance would be at the Hippodrome, guaranteed a full-house. A feature of the evening was the recital by Milton Hayes of his own verse, The Book of Variety. Another star was bass, Malcolm Neil McEachern. The evening raised £2,000 for the charity, which included £50 which the King gave himself for his seats in the Royal Box! King George V remained a stalwart Patron until his sad death in 1936 and when King George VI was crowned in December of 1936, he too became a devouted Patron of the Royal Variety Charity.

THE LONGEST RUNNING AND MOST SUCCESSFUL SHOW IN THE WORLD with King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in attendance. A policeman on duty expressed the general feeling of excitement and wonder: ‘Most of the young folks here had no idea that London could put on an event like this. This is really something like peace.’ Two of the ‘young folks’ present that night were the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose, who joined the King and Queen at the Coliseum for their Royal Variety Performance. His Majesty, dressed in naval uniform, and his family were given a rousing reception when they entered the Royal Box. When Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952, she continued the devotion shown by the Royal family towards those in the need in the entertainment industry, which has continued to this day.

The Royal Variety Performance continued as an annual event from 1921, until war broke out in 1939.

The Royal Variety Performance is now the longest running and most successful show in the world, achieving an average of 152M television viewers around the globe, each year.

The 1945 Royal fundraiser was billed the Victory Royal Variety Performance, coming as it did a matter of months after the end of the Second World War. Inevitably it was an occasion of patriotic celebration

This year we therefore celebrate and thank all those members of the Royal family who have contnued to support the entertainment industry with such love and devotion for over 100 years.

T

his year, I’d like to commend the wonderful efforts of the Management Body of the Royal Variety Charity. We are all volunteers, giving our time freely to aid the outstanding work carried out by our employees at our care home, Brinsworth House and of our charity’s grants team, assisting those entertainers in need all over the UK.

Phil Dale Vice-Chairman

What is so unique about the charity’s voluntary Officers/ Trustees is that each one of us brings our own special skill-set to aid the work of this great charity. For example, myself and Life-President Laurie Mansfield have worked as theatrical agents in television for more years than I care to remember(!), our Chairman Giles Cooper is a renowned concert promoter and show producer and our Treasurer Ian Freeman, is a diligent businessman and PR guru.

The Officers/ Trustees, together with the Members of our Executive Committee, volunteer their services every day of the year for this, the entertainment industry’s very own charity - bringing help, comfort and joy to so many in our industry. However, we couldn’t do it without your support, particularly at this world famous, annual extravaganza, so thank you most sincerely and please enjoy the show!

IAN FREEMAN TREASURER

A

t last, the Covid-19 pandemic appears to be under control and we are able to welcome a live audience back to the Royal Variety Performance, our major annual fundraising event. As Treasurer, I am more aware than most of how important this gradual return to normal is to the sector in general and to our great charitable institution in particular. Your support tonight means the world to us and to those who trust us with their own care or that of their loved ones and the many other beneficiaries of our financial and moral support. Throughout the past 20 months our nursing, care and administrative staff have shown extraordinary fortitude as they performed their duties assiduously and steadfastly under difficult circumstances. Our Finance Director, Martin Dalby’s painstaking work in helping to ensure our fiscal stability is a constant source of comfort to me and I thank him profusely.

Ian Freeman Treasurer

As we enjoy tonight’s show in the 150th year of the Royal Albert Hall and the 100th year of the Charity’s patronage by the reigning Monarch, we remain eternally thankful that we have such loyal supporters, stakeholders and staff. My fellow Trustees, Officers and I will not falter in our efforts to ensure the continued well-being of this wonderful Charity.

ROYAL HRH THE VARIETY PRINCEPERFORMANCE PHILIP, DUKE OF 2021 EDINBURGH

20 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2021

ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2021

A TRIBUTE TO HRH THE PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH 2021 has seen the passing of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in the centenary year of his birth. Prince Philip was connected to 750 organisations and we were honoured that The Duke was an enthusiastic supporter of the Royal Variety Charity. His Royal Highness attended 29 performances during his long life of commitment to our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen, our Nation and beyond in the Commonwealth. The first of these attendances took place at the London Palladium in November 1947, just a few days before his wedding, when Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, RN accompanied HM King George VI, HM Queen Elizabeth, his bride-to-be HRH The Princess Elizabeth and HRH The Princess Margaret Rose, to an unforgettable show headlined by the iconic comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy. Reports from the time record the special romantic atmosphere of the evening and coming so soon after the end of the war, the West End was lit up in anticipation of the Royal Wedding and of better years to come. Comedy was strongly represented again when the now Duke of Edinburgh attended the first Royal Variety Performance of the new Reign with Her Majesty The Queen in 1952. There was noticeable laughter from the Royal Box during a sketch featuring Tony Hancock as a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy (perhaps His Royal Highness was remembering the fun concerts at sea he would have attended and recognising the navy jokes!). Life-President, Mr Laurie Mansfield, met The Duke of Edinburgh many times during the Royal Variety Performances and remembers him “as a man with a keen eye for detail”. The last occasion His Royal Highness attended the Royal Variety Performance was during the most special of times, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year of 2012, it also being the 100th anniversary year of show. It was a full 64 years since the young engaged Royal couple first graced the Royal Box together for our charity. Mr Giles Cooper, Chairman of the Royal Variety Charity, escorted His Royal Highness that night in 2012 at the Royal Albert Hall and recalls “HRH had the most amazing sense of humour with an uncanny ability to immediately put you at your ease. What I found amazing was his extraordinary knowledge about show business and how to stage a show. I will certainly miss how he made me laugh”. The Royal Variety Charity will miss the presence, keen eye and comments of The Duke of Edinburgh at our shows, and thank him for all he did for those working in the entertainment industry over so many decades.

ur residents at Brinsworth took to gardening again last month to help commemorate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which will be celebrated throughout 2022.

A cherry tree was planted on the main lawn as the Royal Variety Charity’s personal contribution to The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), a unique initiative which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is Patron of the QGC. With a focus on planting sustainably, this exciting initiative is encouraging the planting of trees to benefit future generations and create a legacy in honour of Her Majesty. Our residents and staff at Brinsworth were thrilled to take part and think of those in the years to come who will enjoy the garden, this new tree, and the story behind it. If you would like to plant your own tree, visit queensgreencanopy.org Our residents are actually no strangers to gardening, as earlier this year they took part in the Chelsea Fringe Festival where they created a garden installation entitled ‘Bring Us Sunshine’. This incorporated a life-size cutout of the much-loved comedy duo Morecambe and Wise and flora from the Brinsworth garden itself. Created with the assistance of artist Annie Newman, the installation stood on the lawn for passers-by to admire and recall appearances of Eric and Ernie at many Royal Variety Performances. And once again this year, the posy of flowers presented to HRH The Duchess of Cambridge has incorporated foliage from the Brinsworth garden. Residents took particular care in cutting greenery from the garden, knowing it would form the basis of the posy for our Royal guest, which this year is being presented by Poppy Clee, aged 10.

ROYAL VARIETY CHARITY WEBINARS FOR MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING

T

he Royal Variety Charity, in collaboration with the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM), hosted a series of Webinar workshops during 2021 for people working in all areas of the entertainment industry. These sessions were focused on mental and personal wellbeing, which has become increasingly important and recognized over the past year. It has become apparent from online forums, first-hand accounts and through the Royal Variety Charity’s own network, that many from the entertainment world feel that their mental health has suffered during the imposed period of lockdown, with theatres and entertainment venues closed due to the global pandemic. Many people have been affected from our world, whether they be performers, technicians, crew members, working on stage or behind the scenes. The initial three Webinars were themed to assist distinctive groups. The first webinar was aimed at managers in the performing arts industry. It considered the risks to health and who is responsible and offer tools and techniques to look after your own health as a manager and the health of those you are working with. The second webinar was aimed at giving support to backstage technicians in the performing arts industry, often the unsung heroes, and lastly a session providing support for performers and entertainers. All presented by experts in their individual fields.

MANY FROM THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD FEEL THAT THEIR MENTAL HEALTH HAS SUFFERED DURING THE IMPOSED PERIODS OF LOCKDOWN The Chairman of charity, Giles Cooper said: ‘For over one hundred years, the Royal Variety Charity has assisted those in need from the entertainment industry. Not only do we provide accommodation at Brinsworth House, our care home in Twickenham, but also run a successful national grants scheme. Now, for the first time, we can utilize Webinars. The need for these has become very apparent after hearing so many stories from those that have been unable to work during the past year because of the global pandemic. The Royal Variety Charity is pleased to be in partnership with the British Association for Performing Arts for these Webinars and hope that those taking part will benefit from each tailored session.’ If you or someone you know would like to access the materials from these webinars, please email enquiries@royalvarietycharity.org

THE QUEEN’S COMMONWEALTH BATON

L

ast month, the Royal Variety Charity was honoured to be present at Buckingham Palace to witness the launch of The Queen’s Baton Relay. Carrying Her Majesty’s message to those taking part in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Baton has now commenced its 90,000 mile, 294 day journey through 72 nations and territories and is due to arrive at the Opening Ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on July 28th, where Her Majesty’s message will be revealed. In total, over 7,500 people will be ‘Batonbearers’, representing every community in the Commonwealth. Tonight, as we watch the Royal Variety Performance, the baton is 7,000 miles away in Malawi. Dame Louise Martin, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation said that the Baton Relay is “one of the most special aspects of the Commonweath Games” and Giles Cooper, Chairman of the Royal Variety Charity added that “although we are all here tonight in the Royal Albert Hall enjoying a spectacular show, the ITV production of the Royal Variety Performance will be seen by over 152 million viewers worldwide, including a number of Commonwealth countries. If you happen to find yourself in Australia, New Zealand or Canada, on Christmas Day, don’t forget to tune in!”

THE REGENERATION OF BRINSWORTH HOUSE STATEMENT FROM CHAIRMAN

“S

ince being elected as Chairman of the Royal Variety Charity, I have made it my absolute focus to put the residents of Brinsworth House at the very heart of all that we do. Brinsworth is so rich in entertainment history and heritage, having been a ‘home from home’ for so many from the entertainment industry, often at those points of time in their lives when they most need our support. For Brinsworth House to survive and continue to remain fit- for- purpose as the very last surviving, not-for-profit care home - specifically for those who have served the Entertainment Industry - we really are going to need your support. Whether you or your organisation are able to pledge enough for us to convert a bedroom into an en suite, or you are able to contribute toward the new 13 person lift, whatever you are able to pledge, I assure you that the money you give will go a very long way to improving the quality of the lives of our residents, not just in the short term, but for long in to the future. Thank you very much, in advance, for your support and generosity.” Very best wishes, Giles Cooper Chairman of the Royal Variety Charity

INTRODUCTION

T

INTRODUCTION

he Royal Variety Charity is a highly aspirational organisation with a great deal of passion for ensuring that support is given to those who’ve worked professionally in the entertainment industry and are in need of help. We continually strive to support all those, both young and old, who’ve worked on the stage, in the wings, in front of a camera, or behind it, as well as all those who have spent their lives working in the numerous support industries dedicated to entertainment. It’s a little known fact that thousands of people who work in the entertainment industry face desperate financial problems each day. The vast majority live from ‘job-to-job’, from ‘season-to-season’, many spending long periods with no work at all and with little ability to make any plans for their futures, or providing themselves with any security should they have an accident, or fall ill. A Nielsen survey conducted in 2017 found that 94.2% of the industry earn below the average UK wage!

ROYAL VARIETY CHARITY IS HERE TO HELP

In the Rules and Constitution of the Royal Variety Charity, we state that so long as a prospective resident meets our eligibility criteria and have professionally served the industry and so long as we can safely take care of them and meet their clinical needs - we would never turn down a prospective resident. Around a third of our current residents’ fees contain a shortfall of some sort, which is then ‘topped up’ by a grant from the Charity.

THE REGENERATION OF BRINSWORTH HOUSE

THE REGENERATION

I

t is unique and often referred to by many in the industry as ‘The Old Pro’s Paradise’. The entertainment industry is often described by those working within it as being very much like a family - and never is this more true than for the residents of Brinsworth House. Having a mutual connection in common with a fellow resident, allows for a degree of familiarity amongst our residents before they’ve even met, one which always seems to breed a family atmosphere in the home, the like of which is rather unparalleled. The care home has gone through a significant period of change over recent years, which has seen it move from being solely a residential home, to one that now also provides quality nursing care. However, this additional service presents new and difficult challenges due to the layout and design of the building. Brinsworth House is a Grade II listed building, the exterior and outward appearance of which is protected by law and therefore incredibly difficult to significantly alter. Given the history and heritage of this beautiful landmark, the only option available for us is to refurbish the home internally, upgrading the rooms and communal facilities within the existing framework. This will allow Brinsworth House to not only meet more stringent guidelines and requirements for Care Homes, but crucially

enable the residents to have an improved quality of life in a modern, highly functional home. To overcome this, we have begun an extensive programme of refurbishment in order to upgrade the existing building and develop modern facilities that match the need of the residents currently and future proof this national treasure, which is Brinsworth House. To do this we really need your support.

AS A CHARITY-RUN CARE HOME WE RELY ON THE GENEROSITY OF OUR SUPPORTERS TO FUND THE CONTINUOUS LIFE CHANGING WORK THAT WE DO WITHIN THE ETHOS OF PROVIDING A SAFE AND SECURE HOME

STATEMENT FROM MATRON the most vulnerable of our society can be sustained for the future. One of the most significant changes over the years is the need for intricate, person centred nursing care providing a lifeline for those who require help and support in their time of need. Purpose built en-suite bedrooms, wider corridors and upgraded facilities are desperately needed to guarantee we meet the growing needs of our residents and to remain compliant under complex regulations. The dedicated staff work very closely with our residents in supporting them to live fulfilling lives but I fear that without essential renovation work, Brinsworth House will no longer be able to survive. As a charity-run Care Home we rely on the generosity of our supporters to fund the continuous life changing work that we do within the ethos of providing a safe and secure home for our many residents.

I

t has been seven years since I accepted the position of Matron at Brinsworth House, a unique and special Care Home that provides a home for retired members of the entertainment world. We have now come to an important milestone in our history and it is our mission to renovate Brinsworth House to ensure that the safe and caring environment that we provide to

I would like to please ask that if you are able to help, that you please do so by making a donation to the Royal Variety Charity, or by leaving us a legacy in your Will, so that we may continue with our life-changing work and our mission of securing Brinsworth House to serve the entertainment industry, for the next 100 years. NEED FOR REGENERATION - CONTINUED

IMPACT & NEED GP STATEMENT I write as senior GP partner at Cross Deep Surgery in Twickenham. We are responsible for the medical care of the residents of Brinsworth House Nursing Home. It is an excellent Nursing home with wonderful residents and staff, but we have been aware over recent years, that there is a need for a significant refurbishment, particularly when comparing it to newer nursing and residential homes locally. We write to support an application for the refurbishment and upgrading of the home. We have a close working relationship with the staff at Brinsworth House and we do regular home visits to many of our patients. We review them on an as needed basis, but also will work with the nursing staff to provide detailed care plans, particularly for those who have more complex medical needs as well as end of life and palliative care for those residents who are more seriously ill. It is the opinion of the partners at Cross Deep Surgery that Brinsworth House provides a very high level of care to all its residents, and the atmosphere of the home is unlike many modern day facilities, as it contains much character, history and charm. The residents are well looked after medically and holistically. However, as the years pass, it is quite apparent that Brinsworth House facilities, when compared to modern day, purpose built care and nursing homes, are increasingly lacking. Most of the bedrooms do not have en suites, and for many of the residents with significant medical needs, this is far from ideal. Also wider corridors and a much larger upgraded lift providing access to the first floor of the home would hugely benefit the quality of life of the residents and help the home compare more favourably with the more modern residential and nursing service providers in the local area. In view of CQC requirements which are increasingly strict, Brinsworth will find it difficult to remain compliant with the regulations and guidelines required as it stands. Brinsworth House contains an important heritage which if not refurbished and preserved, would be a colossal loss, not just to Twickenham, but to the entertainment industry to which it serves. My partners and I fully support this application for a robust upgrade to the home, and feel it is very much needed in order to preserve the excellent quality care that the residents receive. Yours sincerely Dr Rachel O’Donnell MBChB MRCGP DFSRH DCH Senior Partner Cross Deep Surgery, Twickenham

ARCHITECTS STATEMENT Regarding the necessity of the proposed works at Brinsworth House: Brinsworth House was converted into a residential Care Home in 1911, hence much of the original core of the building falls far short of the standards of accommodation now expected for a Home of this type. In fact standards have changed so much in recent years that the New Wing, added in 1976, does not provide the features that would be considered essential in any new build Care Home, and neither does the Leslie Grade Wing, last refurbished in 1992. The most obvious shortfall is the lack of en suite accommodation for residents – in recent new build projects designed by HTP Architecture the provision of an en suite for every resident is considered an essential basic requirement. This accommodation should therefore be provided at Brinsworth House (to the greatest extent possible, given the constraints imposed by a Listed Building) in order for the Home to continue functioning in the future. Failure to do so would mean that the Home would find it increasingly difficult to attract new residents and would fall even further behind in comparison with other more modern Care Homes. Bedroom sizes are small and in many instances verge on the “minimum” acceptable size. New Care Homes generally have bedroom sizes some 2 or 3 square metres larger than those at Brinsworth House. In the replanning the opportunity will be taken, where feasible, to enlarge bedroom sizes. A further complication arising from the fact that the Home is a converted early 19th century dwelling is that wheelchair access within the building is poor, particularly on the first floor. Widening of the narrow first floor corridors (to something closer to the 1.8 metre width of a modern Care Home) must be implemented if Brinsworth House is to accommodate wheelchair users (and hoists) in the future. The existing 8 person lift is dilapidated and requires renewal, while an additional lift large enough to accommodate a stretcher must be installed – any new build Care Home will have a basic provision of both of these types of lift. Again, this work is essential in order to cater for wheelchair users and for general operation of the Care Home. A general refurbishment of the building is now well overdue, as kitchen surfaces and finishes are deteriorating, mechanical and electrical services are in need of modernisation and finishes in corridors and residents rooms need to be brought up to current standards for hygiene and safety. CONCLUSION The proposed works must take place in order to avoid Brinsworth House becoming outdated as a residential Care Home, making it increasingly difficult to attract new residents, an outcome which could affect viability and may ultimately result in closure of the Home.

THE REGENERATION OF BRINSWORTH HOUSE

THE NEED

B

rinsworth House was converted into a care home in 1911. Although it has served the entertainment community ever since, as the years have passed and the needs of our residents have changed, the home is now in depserate need of refurbishment. People are now living longer, fuller lives, which tends to mean that at the point of admission, their clinical and care requirements are greater than they typically would have been 20 years ago. Residents tend to come to Brinsworth House later in their lives so their requirements have altered and intensified over the years. What was once primarily a residential home has now become increasingly in need of nursing facilities. With current standards and today’s expectations now in the forefront of the Charity’s minds, the need for wheelchair accessibility and private bathroom facilities has become a necessity to address, for the dignity and comfort of our residents. many rooms are without private bathroom facilities ,which is so important for the dignity of the residents.

THE PLAN

T

he plan proposed is to create a fully functional nursing unit on the ground floor of Brinsworth House. The rooms will all be adjusted to include en-suite bathroom facilities apart from the high dependency unit, which will have shared facilities. This is because residents located here are bedbound and require full assistance in this and all areas of their care. The 1st Floor will be completely altered to include all rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Hallways and corridors will be widened to allow proper wheelchair access, bringing Brinsworth House in line with correct standards. In addition, a new 13 person lift will be installed in Brinsworth House. This will make a huge change for the better, as currently it is very difficult for a stretcher to gain access to the first floor in the event of an emergency, thus putting an immense strain on the care team.

THE TEAM HTP ARCHITECTURE

H

TP Architecture is an internationally experienced award winning architecture practice based in Richmond, Surrey. After much consideration, the Royal Variety Charity believed that this team shared the vision and expertise to create and deliver a new fully functional Brinsworth House. HTP have been commissioned on a Full Service basis from initial concept design stage to handover at completion, They been been instrumental from concept design and feasibility, preparing and lodging required planning applications and worked closely with Jackson Coles to ensure a worthwhile build.

JACKSON COLES

ackson Coles are an independent and comprehensive Construction Consultancy, established for over 35 years based in London and Milton Keynes operating primarily in the South East but also across the UK and further afield. They collaborate with Developers, Investors, Planners and Architects to bring their visions to life. The Royal Variety Charity team have worked tireslessly with them to ensure that the costings and timelines are as efficient as possible and considerate to residents, which is of course the main priority. …continued

A message from the Chief Executive of the Royal Albert Hall

Welcome back! After the toughest period in our 150-year history, we’re delighted to open our doors again, and play host to very special events like this one. The Hall is a registered charity committed to providing unforgettable, life-enhancing experiences for everyone. Having lost more than £60m income, refunded £10m in tickets and taken on a £20m debt during our 16-month pandemic-related closure, we know that recovery will take a long time. But there’s now a light at the end of the tunnel and we are so excited to be getting back to what we do best. Supporting other charities by welcoming them to our spectacular building is something we have been doing since opening in 1871. The Hall remains at the heart of British cultural and creative life and proudly supports many charities to full their charitable aims. I would like to thank you for your continued support of the Hall – just by being here today you are helping our recovery. I look forward to sharing our ongoing 150th anniversary celebrations with you in the months and years to come – see you soon!

Theatres and music venues have been closed for most of the year, festivals and outdoor concerts were abandoned and tens of thousands of people working in all parts of the industry, mostly on a freelance ‘job-to-job’ basis, have been left to fend for themselves with little or no support from the Government - not qualifying for furlough, or any other scheme that has been offered.

A graduate of the London College of Music, he’s known for his role in cult sitcom Black Books, as team captain on the anarchic Never Mind the Buzzcocks, appearances on freewheeling panel show QI, many UK and international stand-up tours… and most recently being crowned Strictly Come Dancing champion 2020. Bill’s other notable TV work includes Bill Bailey’s Jungle Hero for BBC Two, about the Victorian naturalist Alfred Russell Wallace, and a brilliant deconstruction of orchestras, Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra, both garnering much acclaim and winning international awards. Bill’s comedy is a fusion of the surreal and the intelligent, blending stories, poetry and deft wordplay that takes aim at the world’s absurdities. Music is the defining feature of his live shows, where you could find Tom Waits singing Old Macdonald or Kraftwerk singing the Hokey Cokey… as the Sunday Times says, “Comedy’s Mozart”. This December, Bill embarks on a new tour entitled En Route to Normal. The tour plays in UK arenas before travelling across the globe until late 2022.

ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2021

HISTORY OF THE  ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

T

he Royal Variety Performance was first staged in 1912, when His Majesty King George V and Her Majesty Queen Mary agreed to attend a ‘Royal Command Performance’ at London’s Palace Theatre in support of the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (now the Royal Variety Charity) and its proposal to build an extension to its Home for elderly entertainers, Brinsworth House, in Twickenham. No expense was spared at this first Performance with 3 million roses strewn around the auditorium and the Royal Box. The show opened and closed, as would become traditional, with ‘God Save the King’, and performers included the legendary Scottish singer Harry Lauder and male impersonator Vesta Tilley – the Queen reportedly covered her eyes with her programme at the sight of a woman in trousers. Ballerina Anna Pavlova was also in the line-up, having two years earlier caused a sensation in the Palace Theatre by slapping her male dance partner for dropping her by mistake. The controversial dancehall star of the day, Marie Lloyd, was not invited to perform as she was embroiled in a professional dispute and was in any case deemed ‘too risqué’ for royal eyes; she defiantly staged a rival performance at a nearby theatre instead, billing it as ‘By command of the British Public’, but it was not a success. This original show has grown from comparatively humble beginnings into a spectacle watched by a TV audience of over 150 million worldwide in 65 different countries. In Norway, for example, it has even become a New Year’s tradition to watch the Royal Variety Performance, which is broadcast at midnight on January 1st! The second Royal show in 1919 was the first to be given the current billing of ‘Royal Variety Performance’; held at the London Coliseum a year after the end of the first World War, it was declared ‘a celebration of peace’ and featured performers from allied countries including Australia and France. In 1921, His Majesty King George V agreed to become Life Patron of the Royal Variety Charity – the start of an unbroken line of Royal patronage from the reigning Monarch, which continues to the present day. The show subsequently became an annual event when the King decreed after the Performance that ‘the Monarch, or a senior member of the Royal Family would attend a performance in aid of Brinsworth House and the Royal Variety Charity once a year thereafter’. By 1923 the show had become such an established and popular event that tickets would sell out as soon as they were issued. It was therefore decided in 1926 that that year’s Performance should be broadcast on BBC radio, for enjoyment by a wider audience. In the early 1930s the Royal Variety Performance moved to the London Palladium, which was to become its spiritual home for many years. Many stars still

recognised today as timeless variety names performed in this period, including Max Miller and Gracie Fields; the 1932 show also saw debut performances by six comedians who went on to form the Crazy Gang, one of the most successful comedy troupes in British history. 1935 saw the Silver Jubilee of an ailing King George V and Queen Mary, and that year’s spectacular sell-out show proved sadly to be a fittingly grand end to the great support these Royals had shown the Variety Performance. The Jubilee drew huge crowds to the show, with people from all over the world desperate to get their hands on a ticket; one American millionaire offered a staggering £500 (around £36,000 in today’s money) for a pair. That year’s line-up included Stanley Holloway, Jessie Matthews and the Harry Roy Band, and was an enormous success; but the King who had paved the way for a century of Royal patronage and dedication to the Entertainment’s Industry’s own Charity unfortunately died a few months later, in January 1936. A one-year interlude followed, during which King Edward VIII’s crown had barely touched his head before British rule and the reins of Variety Performance patronage were taken up once more by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother). The 1937 event was held again at the London Palladium, and it was widely agreed that controversial comedian Max Miller stole the show.

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

Although no-one could have foreseen it, 1938 turned out to be the final show before World War II stopped play for the next seven years. As if anticipating the dark days ahead, seminal performances were given by an incredible 250 artistes, making it the biggest night in RVP history. Riding high on Hitler’s defeat, Britain channeled the spirit of victory into 1945’s event, billing it ‘The Victory Royal Variety Performance’ and turning it into a national celebration.

Tommy Trinder played host to a cast of acts that included Sid Field and Vic Oliver, and Robert Nesbitt made his debut as director for what was to be an impressive 25 further shows. Our current Queen Elizabeth attended as Princess, aged 19, accompanied by the King and Queen and her younger sister, Princess Margaret Rose. Presenter of the 1947 Performance, Val Parnell, caused controversy by choosing several high-ranking international names at the expense of some rather less familiar, home-grown acts; he defended himself by pointing out that the purpose of the event was to showcase the Variety business to its best possible advantage for their Majesties’ enjoyment, adding as an aside that ‘We cannot afford, when people are paying ten guineas a seat, to experiment too much’. The Royal Variety Performance continued to reach new heights in the ’40s and ’50s, the precocious star of the 1948 show being an enchanting 13 year-old Julie Andrews, who followed up her solo spot by leading the cast in a verse of the National Anthem in the finale. The original TV recording can be seen on our website and Facebook pages. In 1951 Michael Bentine, future Goon, pulled together an eccentric and hugely popular comedy troupe from six acts who had been regulars on the Royal Variety circuit since 1932; The Crazy Gang was born, and raised the rafters. This was also the year in which surprise appearances were made in the Royal Box by an absent King George VI’s two private nurses; Queen Elizabeth reported to his well-wishers that the King was, regrettably, too ill to attend, ’but he is listening in’. Richard Murdoch and Kenneth Horne sang His Majesty’s health. There was much excitement around 1952’s Variety Performance, being as it was the first in the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. No doubt to everyone’s relief, upon seeing the programme the Queen declared it ’the best show of all’ – one which featured the Beverley Sisters, Ian Wallace and Norman Wisdom. The Duke of Edinburgh took a particular shine to comedian Tony Hancock and his impersonation of a French Royal Navy commander. The decision of the Crazy Gang in 1951 to do away with the audience’s long-running fear of becoming too raucous in the presence of royalty proved such a success that in 1954 they took the idea to the next level; before the Royal family arrived, the Gang gave the audience a thorough warm-up by strolling in and out of their Box dressed as cleaners, and selling icecreams in the auditorium. By a stroke of good fortune, two Royal Variety Performances were arranged in 1955; this meant that the country was perhaps not as disappointed as it could have been when 1956’s show was cancelled due to brewing unrest surrounding the Suez Canal. The performers themselves were distinctly piqued, however, and a disgruntled Jimmy Wheeler launched into his act upon hearing the news, announcing ’I’ve rehearsed this bloody act for a fortnight so somebody’s gonna hear it’. Fortunately not the Royals, however, as his impromptu act was somewhat more risqué than the prepared version.

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE

The organisers finally gave in to the lure of televisation in 1960, a year in which the show was utterly eclipsed by Sammy Davis Junior. “In eight electrifying minutes,” the Daily Sketch excitedly reported, “this entertainer made the word ‘star’ seem inadequate”. The year 1963 was the year Beatlemania hit the Royal Variety Performance. The Beatles attracted ecstatic fans outside the Prince of Wales theatre and through the Sunday rehearsals the noise of the throng could be heard by the artistes on stage. It was necessary to construct a screened passageway between the theatre and the hotel next door, where the Beatles were staying, in order to get them in and out of the theatre without being seen. The effect of the crowds obviously affected the other artistes on the bill and Marlene Dietrich made a point of always being in evidence when the photographers were around! The first 1955 show was held at the Opera House in Blackpool, with predominantly regional talent such as Tower organist Reginald Dixon, comic doubleact Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warriss, and a couple of young comedians by the name of Morecambe and Wise. The London line-up was more traditionally diverse, and included Benny Hill and the Chinese Classical Theatre Company. Independent Television’s bid to broadcast the show that year was swiftly quashed, on the grounds that TV would threaten the variety format. The format began to undergo some changes in 1958 at the hands of Bernard Delfont and Robert Nesbitt, not all of them well received. Delfont decided to cut back on long-established British acts in favour of the big American artistes of the day, Pat Boone and Eartha Kitt, as well as fresh local talent like Roy Castle, Max Bygraves and magician David Nixon. The omission of the adored Crazy Gang from the bill caused minor uproar. Further change was afoot in 1959 when the Performance was held, for the first time, in Manchester Palace Theatre. As well as the traditional comic element in the form of Al Read, an 18-year-old Cliff Richard made an angelic and well-scrubbed appearance.

During rehearsal Paul McCartney managed to get his guitar caught in the curtains, but on the night itself the Beatles took the show by storm and John Lennon passed into Royal Variety history when he made his celebrated suggestion that those in the cheap seats should clap their hands; the rest could just rattle their jewellery. The original TV recording of the Beatles’ performance of three songs can be seen on our website and Facebook pages. A gifted comedy quartet comprising Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers were a massive hit at the 1965 Royal Variety Performance, which returned to the London Palladium. Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey were also on hand to provide a quintessentially 60s musical element. The entire English football team took bashfully to the stage after their World Cup triumph in 1966, while the French singer Gilbert Becaud was forced to watch silently from the stalls after having lost his voice.

ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2021

Girl Power made its first appearance in the 1967 show, which was crammed to bursting with female entertainers after their absence had led to complaints the previous year – a modest Sandie Shaw was seen to have changed out of her revealing stage outfit to meet the Queen, commenting that ‘I am told it would be more elegant to be presented to the Queen in something a little more special!’ Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, a seasoned music hall and variety afficionado, announced that the 1968 Performance was one of the best ever. Des O’Connor, Englebert Humperdinck and Petula Clark all played their part, and former Supreme Diana Ross used the occasion to make a moving tribute to Martin Luther King, whose tragic assassination had rocked the world earlier that year. By the 1970s the RVP had really got into its stride, pulling the crowds in with line-ups that positively glittered with stardom; national treasures like Ronnie Corbett and Elton John rubbed shoulders with international sensations including the Jackson Five, Carol Channing and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. A rather risque sketch from the popular BBC TV comedy ‘Till Death Us Do Part’ found its way onto the 1972 bill, much to the consternation of a public keen to protect their delicate Royals. In the event, all went smoothly on the night and a rather harried Bernard Delfont reported afterwards that the Queen Mother had said ‘Well, that wasn’t too bad, was it?’ with evident relief. 1974 was the year in which the Variety Artistes’ Benevolent Fund became the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (EABF), allowing a wider cross-section of showbusiness to fall under the charity’s protective net. The use of ’Crossroads’ star Noele Gordon as the show’s first ever female host was an additional landmark for that year.

72 | ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2021

In 1976, after 16 years of pre-recorded broadcasts, the Royal Variety Performance took a nervewracking leap into the world of live television. The long-suffering Bernard Delfont wearily recalls the poltergeist-level disruptions that beset that year’s show, including falling microphones, power outages and a persistent sound fault that rendered poor Mike Yarwood’s voice practically inaudible over a deafening orchestra. After two years in which to retreat and lick their wounds, the organisers braved the live format once again in 1978. Although all went well, the experience and the potential for embarrassment and disaster were deemed overall too stressful to make it worthwhile, and the show has wisely been pre-recorded ever since. In 1979, a no doubt grey-haired Lord Delfont passed the organisational baton to Louis Benjamin, highly

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE qualified by dint of his position as managing director of Associated Television, chairman of Stoll Moss Theatres and life governor of the EABF. The show was held at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane for the first time. The 1980 Performance marked Her Majesty the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday, and as such was a nod to all the variety show greats of the last 50 years who had kept the Queen entertained throughout her reign.

1981 saw another innovation, stimulated by the need to counter the mounting costs of staging the show. For the first time, sponsorship was introduced to offset the unavoidable production costs and as a less contentious alternative to raising seat prices. Louis Benjamin also alleviated the financial problem by selling advertising spots in the Performance programme, and re-negotiated screening fees in the UK and abroad. 1986 was the BBC’s 50th anniversary, so in a fitting tribute this was the year the company produced and presented the show. From then until 2010, broadcasting and production alternated each year between the BBC and ITV. ITV contractor London Weekend Television staged the Performance in 1987 and a galactic cast included Stephen Fry, Sarah Brightman and Tom Jones. Two breaks from tradition followed a few years later. The 1990 Royal Variety Performance, staged by the BBC, was billed as Queen Elizabeth’s ‘Royal Birthday Gala’ and took place in July in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. Roger Moore, Sir John Gielgud and the Band of the Grenadier Guards all made an appearance. The following year, a performance of the musical ‘Miss Saigon’ was put on for the show at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. After this, the Royal Variety Performance was held in London’s Dominion theatre for the next five years with a roster of household favourites such as Lulu, Cilla Black and Tom Jones. American rabbi-turned-comedian Jackie Mason vastly outstayed his allotted stage time, the adulation he was receiving seeming to blind him to the TV monitor mounted on the theatre’s circle flashing ‘GET. OFF. NOW!’ at him in large red letters. Since 2008, Simon Cowell’s hugely successful ITV show, ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ has generously donated a proportion of the money raised from viewers’ telephone votes to the Royal Variety Charity. In return, the Royal Variety Charity arranges for the series winner of the talent show to be awarded with the much-coveted prize of a spot on that year’s Royal Variety Performance. The first winner to perform was opera singer Paul Potts, followed by the incredible 14-year-old street dancer George Sampson, then the ten-strong dance troupe, Diversity. Gymnastic group Spelbound wowed the audience the following year, followed by Scottish CONTINUED OVERLEAF

singer Jai McDowall in 2011, Ashleigh and Pudsey in 2012, Hungarian shadow dancers Attraction in 2013, Collabro in 2014 and Jules, Matisse & Friends in 2015. In February 2011, the Royal Variety Charity awarded exclusive broadcasting and production rights of the show to ITV1 for the next ten years, securing the future of this great entertainment institution until at least 2021, and further strengthened the Charity’s links with the country’s most prominent commercial broadcaster. The year 2012, saw a very special production of the Royal Variety Performance to mark its centenary year. The event was staged at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time, in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. A spectacular international line-up was presented that included, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Placido Domingo, Bill Bailey, One Direction, Girls Aloud, David Walliams, Rod Stewart, Andrea Bocelli and Neil Diamond, The 100th anniversary evening was celebrated in style with a further fund raising event at a lavish aftershow banquet at the Hilton Hotel on London’s Park Lane. This one evening of entertainment raised over £700,000 for the charity. The Royal Variety Performance has been hosted by many cities outside London, in its lifetime, including Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Blackpool and Manchester. 2014 was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the first time and was held at the London Palladium. It included a glittering cast including host Michael McIntyre, Bette Midler, Shirley Bassey, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Golding and One Direction. On 26th June 2015, the Executive Committee of the EABF met for an historic Annual General Meeting. Chairman Giles Cooper had previously gained approval from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office to change the name of the charity from the EABF to

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE the Royal Variety Charity and Buckingham Palace and the Cabinet Office followed by awarding the charity the honour of official use of the title ‘Royal’ within the charity’s name. The Executive Committee subsequently voted on that day to change the name of the charity with immediate effect. The 2015 Royal Variety Performance was staged for only the second time at the Royal Albert Hall and marked another first, with the attendance of HRH Prince Harry for his first time. Security was tight for the ever-popular Prince and it got even tighter as the night progressed and news of the numerous terrorist bombs in Paris spread amongst the security services. The show was led by its youngest ever host at 29 years old, Jack Whitehall, who introduced acts including the debut return of Jeff Lynne’s ELO, together with Little Mix, Brandon Flowers from the Killers, Ricky Martin and Sir Elton John. A highlight included a magical show stopping moment from the cast of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s multi-award winning musical Mary Poppins, when Mary flew to the stage suspended by a zip-wire stretching the entire length of the Albert Hall! However, a surprise addition from the relatively unknown cast of the Play That Goes Wrong, for many stole the show, and included some surprise star cameos including participation from Kylie Minogue, Josh Groban and Jack Whitehall! The 2016 show returned to London’s Hammersmith Apollo for only the second time in its history and was attended by TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. Hosted by David Walliams, highlights included Lady GaGa, Sting, Robbie Williams, Gary Barlow and Barry Gibb. The Royal Variety Charity then staged its official aftershow party and banquet at Grosvenor House on Park Lane for the first time. In 2017, the show returned to the London Palladium and welcomed back the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge for a night of spectacular entertainment hosted by Miranda Hart.

The Royal Variety Performance 2018 was ‘a first’ on many fronts. The show was staged at the London Palladium exactly six months (to the day) following the marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended their first Royal Variety Performance together on 19th November 2018. Her Royal Highness was pregnant with the Royal couple’s first child and huge crowds gathered outside the Palladium, on a wet and windy November night to catch a glimpse of the Royal arrival. The show included the Invictus Games Choir singing the national anthem, the original West-End cast of Hamilton, where the original stage set had been flown in from New York’s Broadway the previous week and the cellist from the Royal Wedding Sheku Kanneh-Mason. 2019 continued the run of spectacular shows, this time with the hugely supportive Duke and Duchess of Cambridge back in attendance. Emile Sande & the Bee Vocal Choir provided a very emotional rendition of ‘You Are Not Alone’, to highlight the plight of mental health and the new Mary Poppins musical made the Duchess remark that the young Prince George and Princess Charlotte had wished they could attend the performance, but alas, it was way past their bedtime! Robbie Williams performed twice, the second time replacing Sir Rod Stewart who had unfortunately fallen ill with a throat infection on the morning of the show. 2020 brought with it the onslaught of the Covid pandemic and therefore proved one of the most challenging in Royal Variety history. The show was staged at the spectacular Royal Opera House Winter Gardens in Blackpool with host Jason Manford. However, lockdown restrictions meant that the show had to be without a physical audience in the theatre. Instead, it was streamed virtually to an invited audience of charity supporters and Blackpool’s NHS and keyworkers. LED TV screens were placed in each of the stalls seats, so the performers could see the faces and reactions of their virtual audience! The Prince of Wales made an impassioned video message in support of the Royal Variety Charity and thanked all of the performers for taking part in the fundraising extravaganza during such an awful year for the entertainment industry. A particular highlight was the inclusion of Captain Sir Tom Moore who performed his No 1 Hit, with Michael Ball OBE and the NHS Choir. As always, the show was broadcast on television throughout the world over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

NICK HOPKINSON MBE DL - R.I.P.

O

ne stalwart supporter of the Royal Variety Charity is not in the audience this evening for the first time in 16 years. Nick Hopkinson MBE DL - known to all as ‘Hoppy’ - died in September, after a sudden recurrence of cancer. He had already booked his seats for tonight’s performance. Nick was an inspirational entrepreneur who built a national kitchen and bathroom business from scratch - whilst at the same time supercharging the fundraising for youth club provision. This started with Bolton Lads and Girls Club - which became a Beacon of Excellence - and a template for the Onside Youth Zone network of fourteen state of the art youth clubs across the UK, for which he raised tens of millions of pounds. He was awarded an MBE in 2009 for his work in this field - and continued his fundraising mission - once raising a million pounds in one night with his legendary auctioneering skills. He led nine trips up Kilimanjaro - taking well over 100 fundraisers with him - and whilst there, supported charities in Tanzania. The guides and porters knew him as Hoppy Babu. He was an art lover and serious art collector - but even managed to turn this passion into a means of fundraising - persuading some significant artists and sculptors to donate some editions of their work for him to sell or auction. One such collaboration with Harland Miller and White Cube Galleries, raised £2.5m worldwide for charities affected by the pandemic. Nick was appointed High Sheriff of Cheshire in 2020/2021. His online presence reached out to many Cheshire charities and individuals during that year - not only by raising huge sums of money but encouraging and supporting those in need and giving them energy and new ideas. Hoppy was a giant of a man who dedicated much of his life to supporting those less fortunate than himself. We need more people like Hoppy.

BRINSWORTH HOUSE IN THE NEWS 2021 THE GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER First published in April 2021 From entertainers to seafarers, care providers are moving to bespoke offerings catering to niche markets

B

rinsworth House, a care home for retired light entertainers, is a paradise for old pros, whether they are former wig makers, set designers or the one-time stars of the show. Among faded playbills, treasured programmes and portraits of actors lining the walls of the Middlesex care home, residents live out memories from before their final curtain call. “This home speaks to my soul,” said Rosario, a former flamenco dancer who will celebrate her 90th birthday at Brinsworth House in June. “We hold the memories of all the performers who have lived here. We have all lived very interesting lives and understand each other’s journey through life, so can talk about our thoughts, ideas and talk about the past. This home is quite extraordinarily perfect.” More than 80% of the UK’s care home market is made up of independent, small and medium-sized providers. The last year has been tough for them, with some experts estimating that 6,500 could close over the next five years. Care homes had tens of thousands of deaths during the pandemic, which has left many beds vacant.

Rosario, a former flamenco dancer, at Brinsworth House: ‘This home speaks to my soul’.
