The Robber Bride Copertina flessibile – 16 febbraio 1999

Exploring the paradox of female villainy, this tale of three fascinating women is another peerless display of literary virtuosity by the supremely gifted author of Cat's Eye and The Handmaid's Tale. Roz, Charis and Tony all share a wound, and her name is Zenia. Beautiful, smart and hungry, by turns manipulative and vulnerable, needy and ruthless, Zenia is the turbulent center of her own perpetual saga. She entered their lives in the sixties, when they were in college. Over the three decades since, she has damaged each of them badly, ensnaring their sympathy, betraying their trust, and treating their men as loot. Then Zenia dies, or at any rate the three women — with much relief — attend her funeral. But as The Robber Bride begins, Roz, Charis and Tony have come together at a trendy restaraunt for their monthly lunch when in walks the seemingly resurrected Zenia...

In this consistently entertaining and profound new novel, Margaret Atwood reports from the farthest reaches of the war between the sexes with her characteristic well-crafted prose, rich and devious humor, and compassion.

5,0 su 5 stelle Femme Fatale

Any woman who has ever encountered a toxic, manipulative rival can identify with all the three women victims in this tale. Each woman has weaknesses and strengths, but none have what it takes to withstand the plotting and treachery of Zinnea. The men suffer, too, but they seem more a Greek chorus rather than fully developed characters themselves. The single male exception is Roz’s gay assistant, who serves as a giver of wisdom, and as a balance wheel for her quandaries. His responses quoted from classic sources give him a certain cachet. It’s a delight to read a literary novel in this time when so many writers fail even the basics of good English usage and don’t use adequate proofreading. None of those problems crop up here, as Atwood is both professional and a gifted artist. Most readers will probably agree the ending satisfies.

'ROBBER Bride has plot that draws you in.
Her spot on descriptions of time , place & character are 'on the money'. The intriuging, Zenia, whom the is the 'Robber Bride, seen through the eyes of those who have been 'robbed' literalky & metaphorically, takes us through their individual experiences of this Jezebel figure. A true Masterclass of story telling, that only Margaret Attwood could think off & 'pull off'. Stunning.

5,0 su 5 stelle A book with probably the best female villain character

I had been wanting to read a book by Atwood for ages but it just did not happen. Her most known book I think is "The Handmaid's Tale" which I did not really felt reading much as it is a dystopian novel. But Atwood is a loved author and I had to pick something from her, so I decided to read "The Robber Bride". And well...This book! This book! Or rather the character - Zenia!
While reading this book, there were days when I woke up in the morning thinking about Zenia - why she does this? What can be the reason? Is she finally telling the truth? What will she do next?
Zenia is terrible woman and you would hate her for whatever she does. But, at the same time, she has this magnetic force that just draws you to her. I as a reader found her irresistable so I can totally understand what the characters felt. The more you find about her in the book, the more you hate her but there remains a part inside you that wants to trust her. It is just something about her that maintains a hold on you and on the characters in this book.
Zenia is a villain and one is supposed to hate her but I liked this character - you can like villains...right? You can have a favourite villain of all the ones you have ever read about. Well, Zenia is now one my favourite literay villains!
When I started this book, I felt it was too descriptive and a bit slow. But as I got accustomed to Atwood's writing style and when the story began to unfold... I just flew through it. All in all, a great fantastic read and I am definitely picking up more books from this author. On a final note, I hope no one ever has a Zenia in her life.
