Which Scream film had the best Phone Call?

Discussion

They're an iconic, integral part of the franchise. The Ghostface phone call sets up the attack, or gets inside the victims head after an attack they already endured. Over the years, we've had some pretty iconic lines from these calls.

"Do you want to DIE tonight Sidney? Your mother sure didn't." - Scream

"You wish it was Ted. Don't forget to set the alarm!" - Scream 2

"It's always hard being friends with you Sidney. If you're friends with Sidney, you die!" - Scream 3

"Welcome home Sidney. Preview of coming events. Oh poor Sidney, you think it's still all about you you think you're still the star....it will be. SPARE ME THE LECTURE!" - Scream 4

"Really? You can’t save your own sister? All you have to do is say ‘Kill Richie’. Maybe you're too weak for this franchise." - Scream 5

"Who gives a FUCK about movies!?" - Scream 6

Even the weakest films whichever that might be to you, have the iconic calls Ghostface makes to his victims. And sometimes the killer as well. After seeing Scream 6 for the second time, I'm of the opinion this had some of the best calls, and I don't think we've heard Ghostface chuckle or outright laugh maniacally like we have here. It's unique and interesting and I'd love to hear more cause that chuckle from Roger L Jackson is just SINISTER.

I'm still not sure though on which movie had the best lines from Ghostface. I think 4, because so many are so memorable "if you're looking for the hospital I'll be happy to put you there. In the fucking morgue!" And "I never said I was in your closet." To name a few.

But what do you think? Which film has the best calls from our favorite masked serial killer?

Gale had the best phone call in 6 by far. It was both scary, sad and funny! Scary when he was threatening her life, sad when he kept bringing up Dewey, and funny when Gale told him to please hold. Wha—? Lmao.

Gale turning the call on GF in 6 was incredible

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

Hahaha "can I put you on hold?" "Huh?" It's funny to see them caught off guard lol

That quote got a pretty big laugh in my theatre

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

Oh same here a few clapped, one person said "Sid would be proud." Which got MORE laughs lol. Man going to the movies is fun.

“Because I want to know who I’m looking at.” Will always be my #1. It just set the tone of what was to come and it was very chilling.

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

I actually always thought his line before that "I want to see what your insides look like." is more chilling than his cover up cause it's just like....IMAGINE being told that on the phone you'd be in a state of shock.

u/iannmichael avatar

I’m 99.9 percent sure he says “because I want to know who I’m looking at,” before he says “I want to see what your insides look like.” But very creepy none the less.

He does :)

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

Well time to rewatch the first movie cause I could've swore he said "looking at" as a way to cover up saying you know, he wants to stabby stab her in the gut. Guess I had it in the wrong order but still we all seem to agree the line is cold asf lol

Why didn’t anyone mention cutting Sydney’s eyelids open so she can watch from 4. That one was brutal.

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

God visceral shit. "I'm gonna slit your eyelids in half so you don't blink when I stab you in the face. You'll die when I want you to. Not a moment before and until then, you're going to SUFFER." Like shit you can feel that rage he holds for her.

4 for me had the most sinister and had such deep vitriol calls out of all of them.

Scream 4 - "Spare me the lecture! You've done very well by all this bloodshed haven't you well how about the town you left behind? I've got plans for you, I'm gunna slit your eyelids in half so you don't blink when I stab you in the face"

Scream 1: "Hello, Sidney."

Scream 2: "You'll never be the leading man and you'll never get the girl."

Scream 3: "Don't you want to know, Sidney, who killed her? Don't you want to know who killed your mother? She'd have been so happy, Sidney, to know that we'd be together."

Scream 4: "Welcome home, Sidney. Preview of coming events." or "Tell Sidney heads are going to roll tonight! Tell Sidney it's all because of her!"

Scream 5: Sidney: "I'm tired of this!" Ghostface: "Wait!"

Scream 6: Can't decide right now.

4 had the most brutal calls. Roger is so talented at differing the Ghostface’s personalities through calls alone— you could really feel Charlie’s anger and brutality through it. Jill had fun with Kirby’s call and it showed. I’d say 5 is up there too. 1996 is a classic though.

u/87regal avatar

“No! You listen little bitch, you hang up on me I’ll gut you like a fish, you understand?”

4 without question

Collectively I’d say 5. Combines an even amount of taunting and wit. The whole Judy phone call sequence is incredible.

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

I actually really love that in 5 we see Ghostface make the call IN PERSON during the hospital scene. It's so rare to see him talk in person and it made things so much scarier. I hope they do more of that here and there cause they didn't really do that in scream 6. Like imagine if Ghostface had spoken to gale in person during her attack that would've been scary asf. Or if he'd taunted the group during the ladder scene.

The call that started the entire series. The only on screen phone call that more perfectly defined a movie franchise in the last 30 years is Liam Neeson’s Taken monologue.

u/ghost4ces avatar

1 or 5. Gale’s in 6 is also a masterpiece.

Technically "Who gives fuck about movies" wasn't a phone call but one of the best lines in 3D in the theater. I was like.. well damn.. they are taking it there.

And then Bailey's acting and all the survivors happened and like many others, it kind of takes away from the intensity of the movie at a whole.

You named most of the best lines and I agree, hearing him laugh and chuckle was interesting.

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

Well I didn't wanna go TOO spoilers but my actual favorite line from Ghostface is his initial call with Sam. "You should be thanking me. They were going to kill you and your sister but I prevented that from happening." Then that evil little chuckle he does when Sam asks if he's looking out for them so good. I don't know why that's my favorite but something about it.... like imagine if we DO get like a vigilante Ghostface is so interesting to think about.

The initial call Bailey gives Jason was really good too. "You're on FIRE" something about that is funny.

Would have been cool if he set him on fire lol

“Who gives a fuck about movies?!” Wasn’t a phonecall but I definitely think it will become iconic and synonymous with the Scream franchise. Had a huge smile on my face when Ghostface said that.

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

I really think that's the line the franchise needed to step away from the whole stab movie thing. It was fun but now they can have the motive be WHATEVER THEY WANT going forward which is huge.

The OG is the standard, but man does 4 have some insane calls

Okay. In terms of ghostface - 4. Jill was the most brutal and savage shit talker easily.

In terms of recipients, it goes to Gale in Scream 6 10000% as someone else already said. “I’m gonna have to put you on hold” “Wait wha-“

She literally pulled a Scary Movie moment right there

I really like in 5 where sid says "I'm bored"

Scream 1, the opening call.

I used the opening call from Scream in an English class as part of my script reading exercise for my higher level students.

I will never forget how every class would react when he says "i want to know who I'm looking at." Which is where I'd stop the scene. The students went WILD. "Keep playing! Keep playing! What happens?!?"

I know it's diluted since 1996 with all these copies and sequels and follow ups, but that initial phone call has serious weight and shock for anyone who is not aware of the film series.

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

I'm so surprised there are people who only know about this franchise via osmosis. But man that sounds like a fun time. We watched the first film in my film class to study the editing and pacing in editing. Actually fun fact it was film school in NAU that got me INTO this franchise...talk about ironic eh lol.

We also watched transformers 07 to study sound design man that professor was so good. Very into show rather than lecture. We'd watch a couple movies take notes then use what we learned to make our own films in groups.

Filming in the fucking winter isn't recommended lol

Should've shown them the whole film 😭

4 has the best calls by far.

u/DasRotebaron avatar

4, imo. "I never said I was in YOUR closet" takes the cake for best Ghostface line of the whole series. For me, at least.

"Name the remake of the groundbreaking horror movie in which the vill-"

i love “ever seen the movie psycho”

u/dsbwayne avatar

Gale 100% “can i put you on hold?”

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

gave me Sidney vibes lol

"I'm bored."

"Wait-"

lol

I actually really like the S5 opening call. Idk why put it resembles this comfortable quite calming talk like S1 had in the beginning. Tara being interested about what her mother says about her and then walking around happily through her house just gets me. It’s soooo simple but for some reason I love the sequence.

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

I think part of that is you THINK you know where it's gonna go cause it does feel so familiar, then Tara brings up elevated horror movies, and your stomach just DROPS knowing what kind of questions Ghostface is gonna ask. Only for Tara to cheat with IMDB only to STILL get fucked up by Ghostface it's comfortable yet twisty lol

Yes! It’s the atmosphere which feels so cozy and warm and then the topic suddenly switches and this nice sunshine like feeling just drops! Ahh damn it now I need to rewatch S5 tonight 😂

As much as I love the og,nothing tops scream fours phone calls.

Scream 1 “Because I wanna know who I’m looking at” “Hello Sidney” Scream 2 “Do you want to die tonight cici?” “my pleasure” Scream 3 “Sarah gets skewered like a fucking pig” Scream 4 “I never said I was in your closet” “I’d be happy to put you there, in the morgue” Scream 5 “Do you think I made it inside your house before you could rearm “ “Ever seen the movie psycho” Scream 6 “You won’t be able to stop this”

Original has the best phone calls, there isn't another than comes close, honestly.

They could've left the phone call thing in the original and found other, creative ways to sculpt an attack scene. It has gotten quite lazy with the phone calls now, you can tell that the passion for the call scenario isn't there as we just get rushed transitions like Scream5's opening and Scream6's opening.

The original works so well because it shocked the audience, now it's the expected. It's worn.

u/AceCoordinatorMary avatar

really? That's the first that I've seen someone go "THEY ALL SUCK but the original."

I really can't imagine Scream without the phone call; we kinda got that in Scream3 and it wasn't really great was it.

But to each their own I guess. The phone call is expected but each is different. That's what makes it fun. You don't know what he's gonna say.

Just the phone calls. Not the entire movies. The phone calls kinda aren't different though, they're all now revolving around the STAB franchise so you can usually bet on the cliché lines being pushed in there somewhere.

Scream 6 kinda went against that a little, but I still thought the phone calls were a weak point in this new movie.

I'm also still just waiting for the realism of somebody just not answering the phone for a change.

Casey in 1, followed by Randy in 2

Scream 1, scene 1. Too easy.

"I'm gonna slit your eyelids in half so you don't blink when I stab you in the face." Favorite call/line by GF.

Honestly, the entire string of phone calls to Casey Becker are so haunting.

"Why do you wanna know my name?" "Because I wanna know who I'm looking at..."

"Hang up on me again and I'll gut you like a fish, understand!?"

"Is this some kind of joke?" "More of a game, really. Can ya handle that? Blondie!"

"What do you want!?" "To see what your insides look like!"

u/Weird-Ingenuity97 avatar

I’d say 4 has some of the best calls. Jill’s malice and hatred comes through the phone so well. 6 had the best Ghostface lines “Now I see something red” and “who gives af about movies!?!” are iconic.

u/Such-Cauliflower-254 avatar

“I wanna see who I’m looking at” - Scream “You wish it was Ted” - Scream 2 “She has a nice voice” - Scream 3 “If you want to be in the hospital, I could put you there. IN THE MORGUE” Scream 4 “Maybe cause you’re a selfish bitch who can’t even make a decision to save the life of the one you love” - Scream 5 “His muscles didn’t seem to help” - Scream 6
