Italy 1-2 England RECAP: Harry Kane becomes Three Lions' all-time leading scorer with winner from the penalty spot as Gareth Southgate's side cling on to victory after Luke Shaw red card

What a win.

A first defeat in 41 Euro qualifiers for italy.

England have had to show two very different sides today. Great football in the first half and grit in the second.

Southgate must be pleased.

Five minutes of stoppage time.

Scamacca comes on for Verratti.

James and Gallagher come on for Bellingham and Saka.

A worry now England as Bellingham appears to be limping.

It's substitute Foden who pays the price. Trippier comes on.

Shaw picks up an immediate second yellow and he's off.

He clips a player's heels on the counter and after a long period of deliberation the referee shows him a yellow for the second time in less than a minute.

Shaw is booked for time wasting.

Gnonto wanders in from the left-hand side but is forced backwards with no shooting option. Tonali then tries his luck but Stones again gets in the way to block before Saka wins a foul inside his own half.

Southgate look a little concerned.

His side just haven't got going in this half.

Foden replaces Grealish.

Tonali and Gnonto come on for Jorginho and Pellegrini.

Saka turns his man inside out on the right before delivering a brilliant inch-perfect cross with his right.

No one gambled on it, however.

A very different to half to the first.

England still yet to have a shot.

Two changes for Italy.

Berardi is replaced by Politano. Cristante comes on for Barella. 

Jorginho is booked for hauling down Kane. No complaints there...

Maguire is booked for going over the top on Barella. A painful one.

Retegui will be happier now!

Pellegrini picks up the ball just outside the box and play a clever no-look pass into the path of Retegui on the right hand side of the box.

He takes a touch slashes it into the bottom left.

Retegui blazes over from about 35 yards. Born out of frustration that one.

Walker was booked for his role in that melee.

A coming together now between both sets of players as Rice and Maguire collide with Barella.

The hosts want a second yellow for Rice but they;'re not getting it.

A couple of early corners for Italy and neither are dealt with particularly well.

Kane has hurt himself blocking the second one but he'll be alright.

He is completely unmarked as it comes across the face of goal from Kane but he slies wide from a few yards out.

Kane smashes it into the top right corner to stand alone as England's all-time top scorer.

He moves up to 54 with Wayne Rooney left behind on 43.

Referee Jovanovic consults the screen and takes a long look before awarding a penalty to the Three Lions.

The referee is being sent to the monitor... we know what that usually means.

There wasn't too much contact with the arm but we've seen them given when they're this close to the goal.

Big shouts for a penalty from England as Kane claims his back post header hit Di Lorenzo's hand.

Good defending from Stones as he blocks Retegui's shoot at the end of a dangerous italy counter.

England's back line has looked solid.

Phillips picks up the ball in just outside the box and narrowly drags a shot wide of the bottom left corner. Keeper was beaten.

England just edging possession (54%) and they've had four of the match's six shots.

Good from Pickford who comes out quickly to deal with a through ball.

Rice is shown a yellow for something he's said to the referee.

Doesn't look happy about that one bit.

The noise of the Italy fans has certainly dissipated after this first 25 minutes from England.

Really impressive from the visitors.

A few words from the official for Trippier on the bench as he irritates Verratti by holding on to the ball too long when it goes out of play.

Kane now fries a really dangerous ball across goal from the right but Bellingham can't quite reach it.

Bellingham drives through the middle again and slides a ball through the middle for Saka.

He tries to lay it off for Grealish in space on his left but the ball is cut out.

England work it well down the left but Shaw's low cross is well read by Donnarumma.

England lead!

The corner reaches Kane at the back post and he has time to take a touch before shooting towards goal. It's blocked but falls for Rice, who turns it in.

England have really woken up now.

Bellingham receives it on the right and drives towards the box before letting a fierce shot fly. Donnarumma tips over.

Saka tries to make things happen as he plays a one-two with Bellingham on his way into the box but he doesn't catch his right-footed shot cleanly.

They come on the charge again but Stones blocks the cross from the left.

It reaches an unmarked Di Lorenzo in the area but he completely fluffs the volley.

A confident passing move from Italy to start the game but Maguire cuts out the attack.

Speaking on ITV just now, he said: It's one of the hardest games in world football really, not only the quality of the players they've got but the historic nature of the football nation. We haven't got great record here and tonight's an opportunity to put that right.

Hendo was a big part of the team at the World Cup but he's not been able to train fully over the last week or so. Kalvin is a player that has played really well for us. He's a super player but he's at a big club where it's hard to get into the team. It's not ideal in terms of rhythm but he's more than capable of doing the job.

A really impressive lights show at the famous stadium now. The home fans are defining as the announcer rallies them.

The warm-ups are nearly complete and it's almost time.

"It was heartbreaking in terms of how we [England] went out of the competition [2022 World Cup] but I think there were lots of positives to take.

"There is an abundance of talent. This stadium is built for football and atmosphere and if you're a proper player then you need to come here and perform."

There's no doubt that the big talking point from the England XI is the presence of Phillips in midfield. 

He's played just 56 minutes of Premier League football this season and 344 in all competitions. 

Italy are without a Juventus player in their matchday squad for the first time in over 29 years.

Just 60 minutes until England's Euro 2024 campaign gets underway.

Starting XI: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Acerbi, Toloi, Spinazzola; Barella, Jorginho, Verratti; Berardi, Retegui, Pellegrini.

It's Rice and Phillips behind Bellingham in midfield with Grealish and Saka on the wings. Maguire retains his place at centre-back alongside Stones with Walker and Shaw occupying the full-back positions.

Unsurpringly, Kane leads the line.

The England captain drew level with Wayne Rooney as England's all-time leading goalscorer at the World Cup when he scored his first penalty against France at the World Cup.

Sadly for the Three Lions he missed his second as England crashed out in the quarter-final.

He remains level with Rooney on 53 and can stand alone with a goal tonight.

Fans are starting to arrive and excitement is building...

Heading into the international break, Southgate believes that his players are up for a 'humdinger' game against Italy.

The England manager also gave his thoughts on his recent squad selection. 

'That is the big challenge we have got. To go to a World Cup, everyone wanted to be there and the fight for places was immense, the hunger was there and it was clear. Now you have to start again,' Southgate said at the live squad announcement last week.

'I know exactly where our most senior players are with that challenge: they are ready. The Hendersons, the Kanes, they set the tone for that sort of mentality that is going to be needed.

'We have basically a couple of days on the training pitch to prepare for a humdinger of a game in Naples so we have got to make sure we are ready for that but I think the players will be ready for that. I know we are as a group of staff and it is a good test for us. These are the sorts of games where we have to show we can go to these places and win. That is the next step for us as a team.'

Mancini included three uncapped players in a 30-man squad ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifiers with the Three Lions and Malta. Wladimiro Falcone, Alessandro Buongiorno and Mateo Retegui will all be looking to make their debuts against the Three Lions.

Paris Saint-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to feature from the off in goal.

Leonardo Bonucci looks set to lead the backline - with Francesco Acerbi and Rafael Toloi on either side of the Juventus defender.

Heading into tonight's game, Southgate already has a few problems to deal with.

Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Nick Pope have all withdrawn from England’s Euro 2024 qualifiers with Italy and Ukraine.

Rashford suffered a knock during Manchester United's 3-1 win over Fulham in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope has also withdrawn due to a minor injury and has been replaced by Tottenham’s Fraser Forster. 

In Rashford's absence, Manchester City's Phil Foden and Jack Grealish will both be in contention to feature from the off.

The two teams kick off their European Championship campaign the same way they ended the last one.

The Three Lions were famously beaten on penalties by the Azzurri in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley in 2021.

England fans will not be too optimistic heading into the game, having lost  of their last five meetings with the Azzurri.

Their last win against Italy came in a friendly back in 2012 -  with Phil Jagielka and Jermaine Defoe both scoring in a 2-1 win.

The two sides last met in a UEFA Nations League match last year - with Giacomo Raspadori scoring in a 1-0 win for Italy. 

Tonight's match takes place at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, home of Serie A leaders Napoli.
