The Leelanau School Reviews
Rating 4.58 out of 5 26 reviews
Notice nearly all of these reviews are from 2019. Much changed at this school in recent years. Cycle through kids very quickly and desperate for students. Not many students attend for four years. Every few years they come up with what they think will make them a niche school. Maybe a school for autistic students? Perhaps a school for ADHD students? Or, most recently, students questioning identity? Unfortunately they do not provide the trained staff to deal with these special issues—but recruit kids with them. This is not a safe place. Problems in recent years as the school can’t quite figure out their identity. Lack of supervision in dorms with most students needing it! Plus- beautiful setting, some of the seasoned staff members truly caring, wonderful people. Facilities are sub par. Strangely, all kids get good grades but NOT college prep. No AP, few even take ACT/SAT. Everyone gets a B so parents fooled into thinking kids are great. Don’t believe it! Many disappointed families.
If you are looking for a special place that will be like a second home to your child, with loving staff, incredible teachers, and a once in a lifetime experience, this is the place. I genuinely get emotional when I talk about how much we love this place and what an incredible difference this school has made on our child's self esteem, education, and life in general. This school was a HARD decision for us as a really close knit family to decide on for many reasons: price, distance, being away from your child. But, someone recommended it and after visiting and touring the campus our son fell in love with it. He has loved all 4 years there, and I will tell anyone who listens that without this school my son would not be and have the things he has today (confidence, music skills, comfort with adults, and an education like none other). My advice to anyone on the fence is just GO VISIT. Very simple, go and visit and spend a day on campus.
Our daughter is a 4 year senior at The Leelanau school. We looked into the school when she was in 7th grade. At that time, what we learned about The Leelanau School really seemed like the kind of education that would be best for her personality. Words cannot describe how fortunate we feel about her experience at the school. The Leelanau School has brought out the happy, engaging, and confident girl that our daughter deserves to be. We are blown away by the dedicated, brilliant and loving staff.
