I love Meryl Streep performance, she did a great job. The make up artists and hairstylist did a great job with this one.

A life's retrospective viewed via flashbacks is nothing new and yet I found director Phyllida LLoyd brought something fresh to the concept, perhaps by somehow reducing or disguising the predictability of such a format but also, I think, because the starting point is so utterly alien to most viewers who feel they've 'known' Margaret Thatcher for a large part of our lives. And yet did we? Once she eventually disappeared from British mainstream politics I think the vast majority of us simply switched off from this 'yesterday woman'. Why would we take any notice as she aged and then gradually deteriorated heath-wise?
Obviously, Margaret Thatcher was, still is and always will be a divisive figure and yet the Russian nickname of 'The Iron Lady' is so incongruous with the very idea of a retired, elderly and physically fragile lady (however 'scratchy' certain ladies may become as age withers them!) that marrying sympathy or empathy with this particular elderly lady (dependent, of course, upon one's own take on Thatcher and her legacy) can, I imagine, for many be a bit of a struggle.
Perhaps this is where Phyllida Lloyd succeeds as I was able to empathise with this character and indeed feel warmth towards her. I remember admiring Thatcher dispassionately at the height of her powers in 1980's Britain while also disagreeing vehemently with several of the policies she orchestrated during this period. But I never felt a connection with what seemed to me to be a very cold fish on both domestic and world stage. I rather think Phyllida Lloyd wasn't particularly aligned with Thatcher's politics either and yet she was intrigued enough to look deeper when approaching this retrospective view on MT. I thought, to her credit, that Lloyd was very fair in her treatment of The Iron Lady.
The keystone to the film, of course, is Meryl Streep's highly-convincing performance in the title role which is probably as close as any actor will ever get. The makeup and mannerisms are almost spot on, apart from just the odd moment here and there where Streep somehow resembles a slightly startled Ken Dodd (no, honestly, have another look!) but it's the voice approximation where Meryl really nails it. Very few American actors can successfully 'do' a definitive British accent (Robert Downey Junior is another) but Streep is uncanny in this respect.
From initially 'giving it a go' to thoroughly enjoying and engaging with the film I would therefore recommend it to others regardless of your feelings towards the Margaret Thatcher who so dominated so many of our lives.
The lady became Prime Minister in the early days of my marriage and I watched as the country came to it's knees and so many jobs were lost. A lot of heavy industry was allowed to die though the mining industry fought back. The Unions too tried and we are all suffering now as the Finance industry which became a mainstay has proved flawed in some cases.
For some able to buy their council houses the time was good but this left less houses for others leading to the homelessness of others as there is not enough housing stock. I do not believe her Prime Ministership was a success though it certainly seemed to raise some people in the 80's but has left others in poverty which seems to have continued since.
Her high point of course was the victory of the Falklands.
This overall situation is then what was in my mind as I watched a film I had said I would not buy.
I felt this film mixed up the audience - first of all it showed her young life and then her climb in politics. Then the film became giddy going on and then sliding back in time.
This going forward and then back continued through the film until towards the end when the stages of early dementia were affecting her and she is shown having flashbacks again to better days.
I know her husband died but in some of these scenes her husband is alive and in others he is visiting her in her mind. It was hard to differentiate between these later scenes.
I felt the film was just half a story. All in all though I have to admit I enjoyed the film despite things I remember and cared about not being mentioned.
In Northern Ireland the men who died in the hunger strikes and so many UK soldiers being shot. Only the bomb in the Brighton Hotel was shown. We had so many bombs in Northern Ireland and on the mainland that were not mentioned. There was also the arguments over the school milk. No mention of her son getting lost in the desert. So many other things that should have been shown, good and bad.
fine performance from Meryl Streep in the leading role. The readily remembered notable incidents in a
contentious career are included and help towards understanding the personality that saw Lady Thatcher
become an iconic political figure, although the constraints of writing for film prevent any real degree
of elaborating on the contemporary context affecting events. She was clearly a conviction politician
who had pride in her country and its reputation around the world and was determined to free it
from the sneer of being "The sick man of Europe". Her departure at the hands of her own Party
has its parallel in the fate that befell Boris Johnson and it might be said that both occurred
through a hubristic failure to understand the public mood and their own Party's ruthless sense of
electoral self-preservation.
The really good elements of this movie are firstly one should not under estimate the challenges of portraying a major politician who left people very divided over her legacy. This film by concentrating on Thatcher's point of view and a retrospective story focussed around her relationship with her now deceased spouse Dennis results as many have commented in a lot of the political events and the other characters becoming largely peripheral. However the plus is to portray her in a largely sympathetic light - not an easy task I would suggest.
The focus on Streep and Broadbent who act brilliantly as Maggie and Dennis plus their younger versions and an older daughter Carol now struggling with her mother's frailty and inferred early stages of dementia, is probably why many feel the film does not work since they expected a more factual political biopic. Instead the consequence is almost a carousel of chosen political events and scenes from Thatcher's life, with an accepted high dose of fiction in how some are depicted.
The flaw for me is that the sub text of the script in how Maggie now faces up to the loss of her faculties, ends up drowning the two combined stories of her marital and family relationship and her political career. The theme that she relied on Dennis and their relationship viewed from the present as she battles with the loneliness after his death and being out of politics for twenty years, is simply too dominant. While this interpretation may be factually correct, someone who was so involved in UK and world politics for so long cannot have that side of their life so ignored or handled in the piecemeal fashion followed here in doing it some justice.
Overall a very brave attempt on a difficult person to portray (hence my four stars) but sadly flawed in its overall execution.
