Book of The Year - 'The Ickabog' (Children's Fiction) 'Troubled Blood' (Fiction: Crime & Thriller) (Audiobook) shortlisted for The British Book Awards 2021
The British Book Awards (aka The Nibbies, aka THE publishing event of the year) will take place virtually this year on 13 May. The book trade shone from every possible corner in 2020, with publishers, retailers, agents and authors pushing far beyond what we'd ever imagined possible in the most extreme conditions. We cannot wait to bring everyone together to celebrate the industry's achievements as we announce the winners of our fabulous Nibbies trophies.
Philip Jones, editor of The Bookseller, said: “In a year dominated by Covid-19, social distancing rules, and lockdowns, the 2021 British Book Awards will surely showcase the trade’s incredible resilience in the face of the biggest disruption seen since the Second World War. The 2020 awards show was a triumph, and the intention is to build on this for 2021 with an even bigger and better virtual event followed, if we can, by a summer party.”
The British Book Awards shortlists have now been announced. We look forward to unveiling the winners on 13th May.
What started as a story that J K Rowling wrote for her own children became a hit when she decided to serialise it for free online, in a bid to brighten up lockdowns for those across the world who may have needed cheering up. Little, Brown Books for Young Readers added value to the hardback edition by featuring full-colour illustrations from young competition winners.
The fifth book in J K Rowling pseudonym Robert Galbraith’s crime series saw Cormoran Strike and sidekick Robin Ellacott head to the Cornish coast. The dynamic pair were called “one of crime fiction’s most engaging duos” by the Guardian, and their return was highly anticipated by fans of the series: according to the Sphere, the title garnered more than 90,000 pre-orders.
Robert Galbraith’s latest Cormoran Strike novel saw fan favourite Robert Glenister return to narrate the audiobook for the fifth time in the series. The popularity of the books has only grown since the publication of The Cuckoo’s Calling in 2014, and book five was no exception: it was Hachette UK’s biggest ever audio pre-order for a single title, up 76.9% on book four.
