A struggling NYC artist, John Hollar (John Krasinski), is forced to return to the small, middle-American town he left behind after learning about his mother’s illness. A surprisingly sweet, intriguing story

I had never heard of The Hollars until I was searching Amazon Prime Video the other day. I saw it, read the description, saw actors my wife and I truly enjoy, such as the very talented Margo Martindale, John Kransinski, and Richard Jenkins. It was on a great deal so I bought it for our streaming library, and we watched... coming away really charmed and impressed by the story. Directed by Kransinski (who is proving himself a talented storyteller), and anchored by he, Martindale - who is one of our favorite “character actresses” - and the memorable Jenkins, this family of chaos comes together when Sally Hollar (Martindale) is found to be sick. This is a character piece, where in getting to know these characters as they deal with her illness, my wife and I found Sharlto Copley really annoying - in a good acting way - as son Ron. His obsession with his ex plays out as a great B Storyline against his own family background. Add in Anna Kendrick as Kransinski’s John’s girlfriend, pregnant with his child, and this family is in for a lot of dysfunctional moments. One of today’s drama-comedy, this story is about real life. Sure the characters are a bit over the top - they have to be - which is why we go for the ride. Along with Charlie Day as Jason, the nurse-husband of John’s high school sweetheart, and Josh Grobin as the new man in Ron’s ex wife’s life, you have some great performances. I don’t want to give things away, but the story keeps turning with some nice surprises and touching moments, along with a few really well played laughs. Like Copley, Jenkin’s Don Hollar, patriarch of this dysfunctional clan, is really annoying - like father, like son. But that too is important - we hated him at times, finding our way back to his torment over his wife’s illness. And the moments between Martindale and Kransinski are off the charts great. We had never heard of this 2021 film, lost in the abyss of Covid and not getting a proper release apparently, but we hope that folks find it and take the ride... it’s a charming little sleeper that deserves to see the light of day.

Most folks won’t realize John Krasinski directed this - or that he got his feet wet with a David Foster Wallace adaptation and a few episodes of The Office - but directorially he did a good job.

The story is fine, not Earth-shattering but not at all boring. It’s a dramedy with some genuinely funny laughs and tender, heartfelt moments.

I doubt anyone will reach the credits feeling they had just seen a masterpiece, but it will leave you smiling in a nostalgic sense, and not just because Krasinski - as the lead - feels and acts a lot like Jim Halpert.

He’s grown a lot since this film, but it sure showed his promise.

This film held my interest from the first 5 minutes and all the way through, which is hard to do these days. It is both touching and funny, and strikes a chord which everyone can relate to. Whether you are a parent, a divorced spouse, a sibling, a girlfriend or an adult child who has lost their way, this story will appeal to you on many levels. The dialogue especially, is natural and easy, and the scenes play out like any one of us would experience in our own family. Kudos to Krasinski for both his reliably solid acting and this time, his excellent directing fused together with a great script and well-chosen, music. I was impressed with singer, Josh Groban's turn as a Reverend and Charlie Day as a take-no-prisoners, nurse. Margo Martindale, as the matriarch, shines, as always. This is a story about going home again for reasons you may not have welcomed, and the lessons learned in the process of coping with what life throws your way, until you are fine again. Bravo.

This is a little sleeper of a gem. John Krasinski is an excellent story-teller as a director. The movie and the characters are so real and quirky. It is not overtly funny, but it is funny because of the reality of the life experiences and reactions of people. I believe John Krasinski has caught and exemplified the foundational movie-making principle of creating from a base of love and he does this here and he does it well.

this movie does not rely on profanity, nudity, sexual innuendo or violence to make a story. Instead, it relies on actual story-telling that requires much more intellect, creativity and effort than the former list requires. I can only hope that Mr. Krasinski will continue his story-telling efforts utilizing these same principles of movie-making as here. If he does, he will be on track to be one of the greatest directors/movie-makers of all time, just you wait and see.

not have the new life coming in, after losing the big loving life that just left!)
2. I cried, drippingly, when elder son so lovingly and caressingly, shaved his mother's head. That seemed to be the
essential message of the whole movie - show care through whatever happens.
3. I laughed out loud when elder son and mom escaped from hospital before her "Last Meal" to an ice cream shop!
4. I felt shared happiness and delight the at "wedding" ceremony, and how they gave each other their betrothal rings.
5. I felt joy when the dad finally grew up at the end; he was glad, too.

I've avoided John Krazinski (sp) only seeing the "Jack Ryan" ads, which are not of interest, but am so glad to have bothered to look at what else he may have done. Perhaps he is a force for humanitarianism, caring, and compassion in stories that reflect more or less real situations, and how we can actually get through them without despair.

Die Hollars sind eine seltsame Familie. Mutter Sally macht im Krankenhaus noch Späße, Vater Don weiß weder ein noch aus, weil seine Firma vor der Pleite steht, Bruder Ron ist noch immer nicht über seine Scheidung hinweggekommen und John sitzt mittendrin in der Familie und weiß nicht, wie es weitergehen soll. Eine ziemlich ausweglose Situation, die eigentlich nur eine Familie lösen kann...

Das hat mir gut gefallen. Ohne großen Aufwand bringt John Krasinski die Geschichte auf den Punkt. Zu dem Auf und Ab bei den Hollars gibt es eine Filmmusik, die zum größten Teil von Josh Ritter stammt. Die passt perfekt zum Film. Für Freunde von Familiengeschichten ist -The Hollars- klares Pflichtprogramm.

Young kids would find it boring because the topic is for adults so it wouldn't keep their attention...older kids would understand it so could watch as a family but due to the topic each family should decide if it's a good fit. I really enjoyed the movie.
