You would think it would be simpler to just kill the mother at that point? Or is what she does after the children are gone the whole point of the time traveler's mission?
Once the child is killed no one realizes they grew up to be a monster. They juat know that a sibling died in the next kid's childhood.

Interpretation: Mother is bad enough to make their children come back in time to kill themselves once born, and the pattern repeats with each child

This started as a "Go back to kill baby evil" thought experiment from the parent's pov but I wanted to make it vague enough that it could be the parenting, environment, fate or just something else that always causes a monster to manifest.
I like it! It definitely achieved the desired “What goes wrong?” effect when I read it :)
