It's acted, shot, and scored nicely, but The Five People You Meet in Heaven makes an unsuccessful leap from book to film, with writer Mitch Albom and director Lloyd Kramer cutting out parts of the novel that really needed to be in there but weren't and nonsensically switching some sequences. It also doesn't help that the more sappy and melodramatic moments of the original source are even moreso here, to an obnoxious extent.

Of all my time substitute teaching, this is the first time I've been given the stereotypical sub plan: watch a movie. I'm surprised it took me this long, but honestly...it rules. I got a lot of work done, and the kids were pretty engrossed or just bored. They probably read this book in class, I don't know.
Anyway, the movie's kind of bad.
Having just devoured the book again in a few hours a couple of days ago, I definitely wanted to see this again, a movie I held dear to my heart when I was younger. It doesn't exactly hold up, unfortunately, not as good as the book (which is absolutely sublime). Jon Voight produces a performance that is great in places, but spotty in others. Altogether, though, it does maintain a large part of the amazing heart that the book did, and that's good enough in my book.
Absolute dogshit “hallmark” film. Only watched this because I had to for AP Lit and I can only imagine what my life would be like if i had the three hours I wasted on this movie back in my life. The actors suck, the shots suck, writing sucks, overall everything sucks. The level of “hallmark-ness” of this film is so through the roof that it’s infuriating. The scenes were so immensely shitty that you honestly couldn’t understand unless you watch it yourself. The budget for this movie was probably about the amount of a quarter pounder at Mc Donald’s.
