The story is quite engaging and motivating for 7-11 yo children.
Children will like the episodic style of the chapters with their cliffhanger endings. Lila and Chulak are good leading characters, but my favourite (and I'm sure that of many children) is Rambashi and his ramshackle pirates/waiters who get the ending they truly deserve.
I'm doing this book with my guided reading group at school and I can't think of a better one to start the year with

Any book that can hold the attention of such a varied group of children so strongly must be good! And it is! The characters are distinct and vibrant, the language crackles and swirls delectably, the plot moves briskly and the ending is momentous, wondrous, satisfying and sweet.
