If Herman Yau's first Ip Man film distinguished itself from the other recent movies about the man by focusing intensely on the intricacies of the Wing Chun style, this one does so in the detail historical backdrop it creates for its main character. The opening shot, a long digital zoom from high over Hong Kong down to a CGI-scrubbed period street as Ip arrives in town, a refugee from the Civil War, and asks for directions to what will be his first residence/school, hints at Yau's approach throughout the film. 15 years or so of post-war Hong Kong is chronicled: vicious labor wars, the corruption of the police force, a vast influx of immigrants, dire poverty, gang wars, economic recovery…

Not connected to the Ip Man series of films that spans over four titles and one spin off Ip Man:The Final Fight is its own telling of the life of the Wing Chun Grandmaster. Snuggled between Ip Man 2 and Ip Man 3 this film stars Anthony Wong in the titular role and portrays the period from 1949 when Ip Man arrives in Hong Kong.
Whilst it is suggested that the film stays more true to real events in Ip Mans life it struggles to grasp an interesting narrative. The key draw of the Ip Man series was the combat choreography but we find here…
Anthony Wong gives the second best performance in any Ip Man movie, after Zhang Ziyi in The Grandmaster.
I know this is how genetics works, but it still weirds me out how much Timmy (Son of Sammo) Hung looks like a skinnier version of his dad.
Better than the first Herman Yau Ip Man movie mostly because of Wong but also because the ridiculous third act action sequence (in this case an all out brawl in the middle of a typhoon in the Kowloon Walled City) is slightly less ridiculous. And also the whole Eric Tsang sequence is pretty fun. The fighting is much better in the first one though.
With a few Ip Man movies already under my (black, but with a buckle) belt, the two with Donnie Yen plus The Legend is Born: Ip Man, I wasn't sure how effective yet another cinematic "chapter" in Ip's life was going to be.
In the end, The Final Fight was pretty good. Leaning more heavily on Ip's philosophy, this film showed an older actor in the role, but he was no less prodigious when situations came to blows. And the fight scenes were still plentiful enough and definitely impressive. Wing Chun in action is a beautiful thing, especially in the hands and feet of a master.

Herman Yau’s film about the last two decades of Ip Man’s life plays like a corrective to the bombast on the recent crop of Ip Man movies much like his previous Woman Knight of Mirror Lake tried to rescue Chinese historical film from its usual bloat. It is a very episodic film less interest in build a narrative (outside of a contrived climatic fight that justifies the regrettable title) than in just let Ip’s life breathe in the middle of post war Hong Kong’s social fabric. If Ip Man the legend is born is more about the action and the fights, this one (despite the title "the final fight") has hardly any (or at least when it comes down to physical fights), and when there are some, they're not very greatly done, even sometimes a bit ridiculous, the fights are cut, quite messy, showing mainly some close-ups on the hands, feet, strikes. More interested in the elegiac winding down of a Hong Kong on the brink of change than being a martial arts film. The fights are fun and performed by non-martial artists like Anthony Wong and Eric Tsang, but they're often cut short because they serve no purpose beyond setting a mood. I don't think the rambling narrative quite works as well as it should, with Ip Man's mistress glossed over so it can't be perceived as a moral failing, but it's nice to have a movie about older heroes whose lives reach their end without a big dramatic sacrifice.
Just putting it out there if anyone is interested: This is a much better film than Ip Man 4: The Finale.
It was a shame they couldn't bring Donnie Yen back as I enjoyed his portrayal in the first two Ip Man films. Although checking Wikipedia has confused me somewhat as to what's a sequel and what isn't.
I still enjoyed this and liked seeing a more sedate side to the mans life. Not that there wasn't some quality action for me too.
Director Herman Yau returns for a second Ip Man outing but with a mostly new cast and crew and a very different tone to Ip Man : The Legend Is Born. Antony Wong now plays the Grandmaster of Wing Chun and the story mostly focuses on his time in Hong Kong throughout the 50s and 60s up to the end of his life. As ever, it's heavily fictionalised, rattling through the usual beats of Ip's life in the first 20 minutes or so before focusing on an ensemble cast of his Wing Chun students.

From the same director of "The Untold Story" and "Ebola Syndrome", I suppose I went in expecting something a bit more extreme, rather than another very safe, very wholesome, and overly told recount of the life of the Grandmaster of Wing Chun, IP Man. The film suffers from my own "Ip Man-fatigue" as I have watched this story played out over and over, much to the exact same results.
