Sobre el autor
Stephen Hawking's ability to make science understandable and compelling to a lay audience was established with the publication of his first book, A Brief History of Time, which has sold nearly 10 million copies in 40 languages. Hawking has authored or participated in the creation of numerous other popular science books, including The Universe in a Nutshell, A Briefer History of Time, On the Shoulders of Giants, The Illustrated On the Shoulders of Giants, and George's Secret Key to the Universe.

Mr. Hawking has gained the ear of the public over the last few years with his amazing books which enable the average person to understand what man has learned about his universe to date. We are trusting that anything he publishes on a public venue like Amazon, will be equally enjoyable and informative to the average person. If you compare those previous books as advertised on Amazon, to this book, you can't see any difference. You are led to believe it is another great book by Stephen Hawking, which some of us thirst for like children thirst for the next Harry Potter book.
I was greatly disappointed when I got into the book and realized I was reading the unedited original publications of the great physicists of the last 100 years. Not that there is anything wrong with them but I don't have a prayer of understanding the material as presented. I did well in algebra, calculus and differential equations - 40 years ago in college. Now I can just barely recognize that there are differential equations in this book - and lots of them. You had better be using higher math on a daily basis RIGHT NOW if you hope to understand anything in this book. I was trusting Mr. Hawking to translate this information into language I could understand - like he has done in his previous books.
If you have a mastery of higher mathematics and are interested in learning the history of physics on the deepest level - this book is for you. Otherwise, don't waist your money. I place the blame not on Stephen Hawking - assuming he has no control over the way his books are presented on Amazon, but the blame is on Amazon itself. They could put a short blurb like "contains advanced mathematics" or "not for the novice" or some such warning in the description but they did not. Now, I may be the only fool to buy the book without investigating further, but I doubt it. How many Hawking fans have bought this book only to find it is hopelessly over their heads? Shame on you, Amazon, for taking advantage of your customers.

The first thing to jump out at me was the uniform font throughout; the papers are clearly not in their original formats (as in e.g. Schwinger's similar [but narrower] collection Quantum Electrodynamics)...which wouldn't necessarily be a problem if the editor took a time to lay out the new text, but that doesn't seem to have happened here.
Worse, though, are the actual transcription errors. Since some of these were re-published translations, I thought it might be possible that the errors were in the original, but I happened to have the original cited in one case handy (the AMS/Chelsea translation of Schrodinger's papers), and a comparison of just the first two pages shows unambiguously that the fault lies with Hawking's publisher (Running Press). Most of the errors seem to be at the beginning or end of lines in the original -- as if it was scanned/OCR'd with the margins set too large.
Basically, it looks as if the papers were quickly pasted together with no copy-editing at all.
There is no index, very few references and/or footnotes, and some blatantly obnoxious failures of computer translation of mathematical expressions and equations.
All that being said, if you can get a "VERY-GOOD" copy for a reasonable price, (less than$5 plus shipping) the book offers the best opportunity I have seen for the interested reader with a good graduate-level, BASIC physics and math foundation to review the theoretical milestones bridging the gulf from Newtonian to Nuclear to Cosmic Particle Physics.
Especially without all the sci-fi mythology and P.T. Barnum showmanship currently being employed to attract a gullible public...
