Summary

  • Lucifer season 6 is the final season of the hit series, with no plans for a season 7. The showrunners have stated that season 6 resolves the story and there are no plans for further episodes.
  • There will be no crossover between Lucifer and the Arrowverse, as the Arrowverse is coming to an end and there are no plans for Lucifer to appear in any non-Arrowverse DC projects.
  • While there are currently no spinoffs in development, the showrunners have discussed the possibility of an animated series or a musical based on Lucifer. There is still interest in exploring the character in different formats.

Lucifer season 6 marked the end of Netflix's hit series, but is there still a continuation for the Devil and his human friends planned for the future — perhaps Lucifer season 7? Lucifer season 6 picks up after season 5's cliffhanger where Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) became God. But the Devil has good reason to stall his ascension to becoming the Almighty when Rory Morningstar (Briana Hildebrand), his daughter with Chloe Decker (Lauren German) from the future, time travels to confront Lucifer over his mysterious disappearance. Lucifer's first three seasons aired on Fox, but the series was canceled in 2017. However, after fan outcry, Netflix purchased the rights to the series, giving Lucifer a 10-episode season 4. Netflix then ordered Lucifer season 5, intending it to be the end of the series, but the streamer changed its mind.

Lucifer season 5 became 16 episodes split into two parts that streamed in late 2020 and early 2021. Meanwhile, production on Lucifer season 6 happened in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the final season received a September 10, 2021 release date on Netflix. Lucifer season 6's 10 episodes include multiple callbacks and a special animated episode that follows up on Lucifer's gimmicks like the film noir and musical episodes of season 5. Of course, whether Lucifer fully becomes God is resolved in season 6, as is the emotional conclusion to the Devil's love story with Chloe Decker. But the potential of Lucifer season 7 and whether the Devil and his friends could pop up elsewhere in the future is a question still on fans' minds.

Lucifer Season 7 Isn't Happening Because The Showrunners "Stuck The Landing"

Unfortunately for Lucifer fans, season 6 really is the end of the series. When Netflix originally canceled Lucifer with season 5, the producers approached it as the end before Netflix reversed course with the show's Twitter account announcing that Lucifer season 6 would be the “FINAL final” season, and Lucifer's crew signed a new deal for a 10-episode season 6 to resolve the story. Of course, anything is possible and Netflix could order more Lucifer in the form of a movie or a miniseries, but the show ended in 2021, and there has been no indication that Lucifer season 7 episode 1 is on the way.

Lucifer showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich have also indicated that they are done with the Fallen Angel’s story. Henderson and Modrovich said that they had initially struggled with renewing for season 6 but eventually decided it was best for the story. In regard to Lucifer season 7, the showrunners plainly stated that season 6 would be the end of the show, via EW. Season 6 is the last of the titular character’s story and while the season 5 ending was able to be stretched for season 6, there are no such plans to do the same for Lucifer season 7.

Lucifer Will Not Return For An Arrowverse Crossover

Tom Ellis as Lucifer in Crisis on Infintie Earths

For a time, Tom Ellis reprising Lucifer Morningstar in another Arrowverse crossover. While Lucifer itself was never officially part of the Arrowverse, Ellis officially brought the character to the Arrowverse (and went to great lengths to keep his cameo a secret) during Crisis on Infinite Earths in 2019. Further, the Arrowverse maintained the Multiverse's existence after Crisis, and Lucifer also utilizes the Multiverse within its own series.

However, the Arrowverse's future after The Flash series finale, season 9 episode 13, "A New World, Part 4", spelled the end of TV superhero franchise, and thus any chances of Lucifer appearing in the Arrowverse in lieu of Lucifer season 7 are essentially dashed. It remains to be seen if Lucifer will appear in any other, non-Arrowverse DC movies or TV shows.

Lucifer Spinoffs In Development

There are currently no Lucifer spinoffs in development or being planned. Lucifer's series finale resolved every main character's arc and gave everyone from Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt), Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia), Dr. Linda Martin (Rachael Harris), and Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) fitting endings to their individual stories. Further, Chloe and Lucifer ended the series together in the afterlife after showing the future where an elderly Chloe dies with Rory at her bedside. Unless Netflix changes its mind (again), Lucifer appears to be definitively over with season 6.

Despite the Lucifer series appearing well and finished, there still could be some opportunities for more of the character and his worldm even if those options are not Lucifer season 7. Lucifer's showrunners discussed the chances of a revival, musing on some possible future explorations of the character. Henderson mentioned an animated series while Modrovich half-joked, "My vote is for Lucifer The Musical, personally, on Broadway. If anybody wants to hashtag that, get that going." While Lucifer season 7 seems to be a no-go, there is still universal interest in stories about Lucifer Morningstar.
