An almost enjoyable, good horror film let down by CGI and some other questionable magic sequences. Also the final act could be better made and thought out.

The movie had a lot of potential. The camera work and photography for the first third of the movie was promising. What failed, in my opinion, was character development. The antagonist for instance, is never understood what his motivations are, he seems like a relatable person at first and then the next minute he's basically an absolute evil SOB, that's unrealistic. You either establish the antagonist as a merciless psychopath or a morally questionable coward. This movie does neither, just a little bit of both. The dialogues and story writing was lazy and one dimensional, which was very noticeable in the acting from the supporting cast (they can't be blamed). This could have been a very interesting movie about people dealing with remorse (the antagonist) and grieve (the mother), through the lens of a psychological horror/ghost story.

In "The Deeper You Dig", you see development in the writing and visual ideas of the trio behind these 'Adams Family' projects/movies. You get a further sense of some of the ideas, themes, psychological effects they are going for, and experience more of the techniques they choose to use to create the most successful version of the concepts they prefer to work with; especially on such limited budgets. Their work from the shorts through "TDYD" came to its greatest fuition yet on 2021's "Hellbender".
They are Toby Poser, John Adams and their daughter Zelda Adams. Their films are the result of a combing of their skills as writers, behind the camera, and for Toby & Zelda, acting. There's tremendous chemistry to go along with their experience and skills.
"The Deeper You Dig" is another psychological horror piece with elements of mystery, vengeance, and especially the supernatural. What sets the film off first of all for me is having such distinct characters. It's much easier to be drawn into the world and the story of a movie if you have figures who are more than a mere cut-out version of a type of person; a generic. These three embody traits we all know from tv/movies, but the acting along with the dialogue create characters I wanted to keep following from early on.
Nice work on the score; used to good effect in building and relieving tension and also keeping the viewer agitated at times. Those icy keyboard 'strings' still work.
John & Zelda again did remarkable work on the visual images and effects. The cinematography reminds me of such great films as "Dead Zone", "Fargo", and some Peter Jackson works. Imagine these done on a multi-million dollar budget. But, they just don't need the production design that could bring to create highly effective, successful films that bore into your psyche and linger a bit.
Then there's the story itself. This I very much enjoyed, as there's the revenge possibility, but from whom? There's the gradual changes in the attitudes and behavior of Kurt and Ivy. Is the guilt on Kurt's part for something in his past? Are they seeing and hearing what they want to hear or what they fear is real?
That's enough. Watch this. 3.4 stars

I love the foundation of the story and emotion, but that foundation calls for a larger building that I feel these gifted filmmakers still have room to build. I hope to see more from the Adams family. I want them to dive even deeper into the darkness because they clearly have the acting, writing, and directing chops to unearth a masterpiece.

A dramatic ghost story about grief, regret and sorrow. The girl's ghost keeps haunting the man who accidentally took her life ("Tell my mother what you've done!"). On the other hand, we see a mother desperately trying to connect with her missing deceased daughter.
Gothic, artsy and beautifully dark!
