Fun and well made indie horror film about a guy being chased by mysterious creatures who kill him and cause him to return in a different life each time. Kind of a Happy Death Day without the comedy. I saw this when it first came out with the whole After Dark Horrorfest thing.
The story is interesting even if it’s got some plot holes, but the biggest draw for me is the cast. I fell in love Jaime Murray back when she was in that AMC show Hustle and Mike Vogel is just a delicious slice.
Who remembers Scott Bakula?
Good.
Throughout the film I was wondering why the actors (except 'Mr. Shittiest Fate Ever') were speaking with a heavy British accent. Then I saw a red double-decker bus (one of the most iconic symbols of England after Led Zeppelin) pass by in the background, in one of the scenes. They imported a 'bos'? I thought. Later 'Mr. God Hates Me Fo' Shizzle' gets hit by a van on the other side of on-coming traffic. Turns out, the film is from England, with a British director and an all English cast except for Mike Vogel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2003) who plays Ian Stone.
The fact that paying attention to details goes awfully wrong for me…
bro and i think i have bad days? pretty sure that Ian Stone is having his worst days of his life... and death.
i was expecting this to be like happy death day or groundhog day, but oh boy it was definitely something different– follows the same pattern but also not at all. it could've been a lot better, like the concept was there but the execution....uhm- yeah not that good. all in all, it's the same old thing again: love conquers all.
"dream as if you'll live forever. live as if you'll die today."
I enjoyed this creature film. It has a slight Dark City vibe about it.
Mike Vogel (Barbie from Under the Dome) is Ian Stone who seems to die and then is reborn as the same person living a different life. A person finds him and awakens his memories of previous lives and then the fun begins.
The lovely Jaime Murray is in this one and she is quite good.
The movie has a nice creepiness and paranoia about it. The digital creature EFX are real good. There is some decent gore.
A lot goes unexplained or just doesn't make sense but this didn't stop me from enjoying this movie even after multiple watches.
Note: An oversight that may have caused some discomfort. Below is a paragraph from the original review, the way I wanted it to sound or be taken:
On the other hand I'm beating myself when I read a review of a film I've watched and written about, and come across a brilliant observation that either comes as revelation (most times) or something I had initially meant to include but forgot because I was paying too much attention to the ravishing Christina Cole and her lovely curves and also smoking up.
After Dark Horrorfest Rewatch
Totally dig this film. It tends to crumble under the weight of its own higher concepts in the third act and misses some of its landing, but it's Outer Limits elements, Dark City lite vibes, and fun first two acts that result in a multi-life (multiverse?) chase sequence is a blast.
Add in Mulder and Scully investigating this young man who talks about monsters and life hopping and this would have been an fun X-Files movie.
Hellraiser x The Matrix x Groundhog Day, but in a good way. I was pleasantly surprised by this largely unknown horror gem. The effects and CGI are top notch for the time and while the acting isn't great, the story is inventive and interesting.
My expectations for this movie were low, since almost all of the films released as part of the AfterDark HorrorFest are terrible, ultra-low-budget junk. So I spent the first twenty minutes just being pleasantly surprised that it looked like a real film - in spite of some seriously dodgy CGI.
The story itself is kind of interesting, as Ian leaps from one life to the next, endlessly pursued by some kind of supernatural beings intent on killing him over and over again. Unfortunately, once the film shows its hand and explains what's going on, it's pretty sappy. And a mystery is only ever as good as its reveal.
So, yeah, in the end, this wasn't a great film. But by AfterDark's standards, it's one of the best. :\
Halloween Horror Challenge #28 - Anos 2000
Unlike every other movie I have seen that After Dark Horrorfest has distributed, The Deaths of Ian Stone is at least interesting and does a lot of things right. However, it is kind of a drag and it gets way too convoluted near the end.
This horror film has a fairly original idea and the acting is satisfactorily good but ultimately, it wasn't very interesting or scary. It's an okay movie for what it is but it starts to get pretty boring in the second half.
