Synopsis
Janet Flanders is a small-town, unsophisticated young woman who yearns to escape her drab Midwestern town. Seduced by the fantasy of romantic love, she believes that someday her prince will come to sweep her away. Then she meets handsome Brett Becker; their passionate lovemaking convinces Janet that at last she has found the man of her dreams -- little suspecting he is engaged to marry someone else. Janet's obsession with her fairy tale of true love know no bounds. Deep into her illusion that Brett loves her, Janet moves to Chicago to be closer to him. She deluges him with love notes, cards and phone messages; she confides in family and friends about her wonderful boyfriend. Brett, however, admits to her that he is about to marry someone else.
Janet becomes a woman obsessed, refusing to accept the truth. She begins incessantly following Brett and his new wife, Kathleen Murdock, a wealthy socialite. When Kathleen is found savagely murdered, evidence and motivation all point to Janet as the killer. Although by new her delusional nature is clear, Janet steadfastly maintains her innocence. Placed under arrest, she hired a famed feminist laywer, Evelyn McGinnis, to defend her. At Janet's trial, McGinnis grills Brett on the witness stand. Testimony brings to light another sequence of events on the night of Kathleen's murder -- and with it, a startling new possibility about the murderer's identity.
