      Critics Consensus

The Darkest Minds does little to differentiate itself in a crowded field of YA adaptations, leaving all but the least demanding viewers feeling dystopian déjà vu.

olivia This is probably one of my favourite films and i thought it was one of the better remakes of a book than other remakes out there (Percy Jackson). I don't know who gave these critics their jobs but trust they're not doing them well, this was a fab film especially for major fans of Alexandra Bracken's work. This film is underrated and 15% is crazy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Natalie Storyline was quite predictable. It definitely felt targeted at teens , and would actually be a pretty good movie for that audience and a tame introduction to an M rated film for high schoolers. The ending annoyed me with rushed wrapping up, and lack of explanation of what the league is or does. The more I thought about it the more the ending annoyed me. But the bulk of the movie was fine, albeit somewhat juvenile Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Jasmin F I think this is a very underrated movie, and I'd wish it had a sequel, tho the book is better, the movie sure makes up to it Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/26/23 Full Review Kenxavia S I wish there was a second movie already 💔 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/20/23 Full Review jxsminenugget j IT WAS SO GOOD AND IM SO MAD THEIR ISNT A PART TWO LIKE WHYYYY Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/23 Full Review Maddy P I loved it, wish they continued with the series Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader To say the film suggests a mix of hazy political allegory and Henry Darger's outside-art classic The Story of the Vivian Girls is to make it sound more interesting than it really is. Mar 4, 2020 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine The Darkest Minds puts an X-Men spin on the typical 'teens in dystopia' YA formula, but the result is more derivative than creative. Rated: 2/5 Aug 17, 2018 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The film is framed so deliberately as a prelude to more exciting times to come in its sequels that it renders the ending oddly anti-climactic. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 15, 2018 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast The film leans into all of the book's worst impulses and, most disappointingly, gives star Amandla Stenberg nothing to do. The FX is on par with other YA films, but the disinterest in exploring this dystopia renders The Darkest Minds hollow. Dec 1, 2021 Full Review Matt Cipolla Film Monthly [I]t isn't much of anything new, but must it be this boring? The Darkest Minds is stultifying -- a truly joyless experience of YA clichés and generic, licensed pop songs. Rated: 1.5/5 Jul 25, 2020 Full Review Alex Hudson Exclaim! There's nothing that makes a dystopia seem less threatening than a shopping montage in a mall that's lit up by Christmas lights. Rated: 4/10 Jul 18, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
