      Critics Consensus

The Conjuring 2 can't help but lose a bit of its predecessor's chilly sting through familiarity, but what remains is still a superior ghost story told with spine-tingling skill.

Kambole Campbell One Room With A View Wan is still effective in creating memorable and horrific imagery that lingers in the mind, as well as moments of levity in-between that are surprisingly genuine and sweet. Rated: 3/5 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review K. Austin Collins The Ringer It is a basic thing done very well, in many ways a pristine example of what Wan always shows up to do. He's going to keep you anxious  --  nothing can feel totally stable when a camera never ceases to move. Rated: B+ Mar 21, 2017 Full Review Savina Petkova A Good Movie To Watch You can't tell from its beginning, but the second Conjuring is even more proficient, deeply troubling, and most of all, bold in the way it renders the possession horror genre a canonical must. Rated: 8.3 Nov 7, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies There is a very old-fashioned horror movie approach to these films that I adore. The sequel wisely embraces that formula while also telling another compelling story from the Warren’s casebook. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Wilson and Farmiga hold the otherwise typical proceedings together, making the usual mechanics of a filmic haunting feel dialed-up on emotional terms. Angel the movie was pretty exciting and creepy. Really good!!! Good effects, awesome music, nice cinematography. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/21 Full Review Farah A Having just experienced the thrill of 'The Conjuring 2 ', I can confidently say it’s a rollercoaster of suspense and horror that sets it apart from other films in the genre. As a devoted fan of the first installment, my expectations were high, and this sequel not only met but exceeded them. One of the standout aspects of 'The Conjuring 2' is the exceptional performances by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, reprising their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren. Their chemistry is not just palpable, but it's the heart of the film, adding layers of depth to the narrative. Their love and dedication, both to each other and to their mission, make them relatable and engaging characters. This time, the story takes us to London, and the change in setting adds a fresh, creepy vibe. The haunting of the Hodgson family is genuinely terrifying. Janet Hodgson is fabulous; she brings so much emotion and believability to her role, making you genuinely care about what happens to her. The movie also delves deeper into the Warrens' personal struggles, particularly Lorraine's fears and premonitions. This added emotional layer makes the story even more compelling. It’s not just about the scares but also about the characters' journeys and the impact of their work on their lives. While there are a few familiar horror elements, they are executed so well that they feel fresh and exciting. The pacing is excellent, keeping you hooked from beginning to end without dull moments. Overall, "The Conjuring 2" is a fantastic sequel that does justice to the original while bringing unique scares and emotional moments. If you loved the first movie, you’re going to enjoy this one. It’s a must-watch for horror fans and anyone who loves a good, scary story with heart and a great plot. Get ready to be scared all over again! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Bearded H When you see a 2nd part of a horror movie series you are going to automatically assume that it is going to be way worse than the first. But the truth is the 2nd movie is on par if not better than the first. Great cast a great Movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review matthias s "The Conjuring 2" is a rollercoaster of scares, delivering thrills aplenty for horror aficionados. While it may not reinvent the genre, it sure knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat with its expertly crafted sound design and spine-chilling effects. The jumpscares are plentiful, strategically placed to jolt even the most seasoned horror buffs. What sets this film apart is its commitment to delivering a fun, terrifying experience that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The standout performance comes from the talented little girl, whose portrayal of the possessed Janet is both haunting and impressive. James Wan once again proves his mastery of the horror genre, orchestrating tension and terror with finesse. While it may not be a perfect masterpiece, "The Conjuring 2" is undeniably a blast to watch, offering a solid dose of scares and entertainment for those brave enough to endure its chilling atmosphere. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Thom G Like other films by James Wan, "The Conjuring 2" is neat, well-done, and effective, with some scary moments, but it maintains a mainstream and sometimes unoriginal feel, with some plot developments that are too simplistic.
