Jamie Bell pulls off the role of Dean beautifully. Silently angst-ridden and intensly serious he carries the movie. Through wise cynicism, and a brash demenior he is human emotion at its darkest and most intense.
With a hauntingly creepy score, and equelly creepy actors, (Glenn Close, and Ralph Finnes)The movie is very dark, almost sinister feeling. Everything is too perfect to be real, except for the people whom each have their own issues. A boys suicide, a childs kidnap. A teens spiriling downfall, a girls frustration, a womans desperation, a mans narcissism, and a community of lost souls, are all intertwined into a suburbian postcard.
If you are at all interested in a nameless generation, and a comedy at at its darkest, then I most deffinatly recommend The Chumbscrubber to you.
Everyone seems so wrapped up in themselves and their superficial lives they dont even notice whats going on around them. Even after they find out the boy is dead they still act nonchalant and careless. The story then ties in with 3 bullies at the school Dean goes to - they want Dean to go to Troys house and get some drugs they say he has in his room. When Dean dosent cooperate they kidnap a boy who they think is Deans little brother. They get the wrong kid. Soon Dean is trying to save the kid whos kidnapped. During all this the adults are oblivious to whats going on around them , they are trapped in their own worlds, seems like they dont care about anyone but themselves. Even their kids. Their solution to dealings with the kids problems is giving them some pills to make them feel better. Lots of pill popping throughout the film.
The ''Chumscrubber'' is a comic book/video game character- a decapitated teenager thats a pop culture icon. I was watching this film thinking when is this going to get good? whats the point? This can be considered a donnie darko-esque picture for 2005- though nowhere near as good as Darko. A slice of pop culture for the new millenium. They had enough flat screen tv's, cell phones, futuristic video games.
Only reason i call this donnie darkoesque is because it has the pop culture. Donnie Darko had that special ''somthing'' , this film dosent. It will leave you disapointed and confused. Not confused in a good way like Donnie Darko did. You could actually sit there and contemplate that film and be interested. This one lacks in so many areas it cant even be compared to Donnie Darko or American Beauty. Donnie Darko captured the era of the 80s, the music, the atmosphere and had an interesting story to boot - this one captures ''2005''with the technology and atmosphere but the story and plot is nowhere near as compelling as Darko. I was suprised to see some of these great actors in this film. Their performances didnt impress me like Kevin Spacey in american beauty or Jake Gylenhal as Darko. For example Glenn Close, Ralph Fiennes and Rita Wilson. Overall i would not recomend this film. 2.5-3 stars. Rent then decide.

I guess it could be described as a really ‘unique’ type of film, or at least it would be if it wasn’t for the fact that it feels very similar to the legendary ‘Donnie Darko.’ In today’s world of ‘shared cinematic universes’ I reckon there’s a reality out there somewhere where the two of these films co-exist. Both are about a young, troubled boy whose world is turned upside down in an insular community of modern suburban America.
Whereas ‘Donnie Darko’ was definitely science fiction, I’m tempted to say that ‘The Chumscrubber’ is also – at least part – sci-fi. However, on my latest re-watch I’d say whatever ‘supernatural’ elements are here, they are so minor they’re barely worth talking about. Jamie Bell plays Dean, whose drug-dealing best friend kills himself, leaving the local thugs out of pocket when it comes to their stash. Therefore, the town’s clichéd school bullies kidnap another boy and try to blackmail Dean into retrieving the ‘merchandise.’
Seeing as I’m refusing to acknowledge ‘The Chumscrubber’ as science fiction, I’m going to call it a ‘satire.’ In other words... it’s not quite funny enough to be a comedy, but there’s enough in it to make you smile to stop it from being an out and out drama. Its message is how parents are too wrapped up in their own – legally medicated – worlds to notice what’s happening to their own children.
I can see a lot of people finding this film ‘too weird’ to be enjoyable, but, put simply, if you’re a fan of ‘Donnie Darko’ type movies, you should like what’s happening here, too. It’s clever, dramatic, funny, different, has a message about our modern way of life and did I mention practically every cast member is a recognisable face in his or her own right?
The rest of the cast are top-notch too, each involved in their own small stories that are all ultimately cleverly moulded together with perfect co-ordination and convincing co-incidence. The tales involve tensions between high-school mates, between neighbours on the estate, within families, between families: it's all very true - and therefore often very funny. The title of the film refers to a supposed computer game played by the kids, but it also acts as a metaphor for the surrounding reality, comprising a society with the wrong priorities in life.
Elements of farce and dark humour keep the viewer smiling and engaged. Dean's father (a perfect William Fichtner) is a psychiatrist more interested in using his son's feelings as source material for his `inspirational' books than in helping his cope; whilst Dean's mother (the consistently excellent Alison Janney) sells vitamins over the phone - "Not just vitamins - they're an entirely new life system". Meanwhile the town's mayor (another Brit in a convincing American role, Ralph Fiennes) sees visions of dolphins in spilt wine, whilst his fiancée (a comic Rita Wilson) worries more about the minutiae of her wedding plans than the state of her husband-to-be's feelings. Chuck in a bunch of teenagers kidnapping the wrong schoolboy, as well as fine performances from the likes of Carrie Ann Moss and Glenn Close, and you can understand the attraction of this left-field production.
The film too has its own tension, between comedy and tragedy, a topic raised in the unadvertised commentary with director Arie Posen and writer Zac Stanford. At some screenings prior to release, some viewers laughed all the way through, but some took what was played out on screen very seriously. They remark that the intention of the film is to be funny - but in a dark way. By the way, this film must have one of the worst director's commentaries I have ever heard, much of it consisting of Arie Posen telling us what we already know, along the lines of "Billy now picks up the cup", as we watch on the screen Billy picking up a cup. But at least we learn that Ralph Fiennes himself painted the dolphins on his fiancée's wall. Other extras comprise some deleted scenes and a ten-minute featurette. One final plus about this movie: for once, James Horner comes up with a great, distinctive, and atmospheric soundtrack.
