Ignore the naysayers -
emdoub12 August 2008
Remarkably entertaining and refreshing little comedy here. The cast of unknowns do a spot-on job of portraying their roles, the writer and director had something ... well, not new, but not overdone, and interesting to say, and, as other reviewers have said - this is true. I have known these people, and even been a few of them. There were very few laugh-out-loud moments - but there were an awful lot of delighted grin times here.

Your experience may be very much a matter of taste - I also thought _Romance and Cigarettes_ and _Go!_ were fun, couldn't make it through more than 30 minutes of _Click_, and have no interest in trying _Dumb and Dumber_, _Jackass_, or _Napoleon Dynamite_. If you need overblown to enjoy comedy, skip this one. If subtle, wry wit works for you - enjoy it.

fantastic and fun.

Overall, fantastic!

A warning: if you don't live in LA - you might not get it. Those that have given descriptions that say this is a fictional portrayal of stereotypic characters haven't partied in LA and haven't experienced how true and hilarious this movie really is.

B&G's guide is a portrayal of hipster party life in Los Angeles. It's story is told like a "how to" manual for the various scenarios that scenesters find themselves in. Its well shot, and I thought that the director, Paul Sapiano, did an excellent job. I love that one of the main characters brought an old mobile to one of the parties in silver lake, and made it a fashion statement. Its too bad that this movie was not released in more theaters. As far as I know, there was only one showing thus far in LA at the Chinese Mann theater in Hollywood. I hope to see it released, and more accessible in the future.

Great movie
mattniraq328 February 2008
One of the most originally hilarious movies I'd seen in a long time. From rating other movies I'd seen, this was a recommendation and I took a chance on it. I watched it probably 20 times in the course of 2 weeks with different groups of friends, none said one bad thing about it. One of my friends actually went online and bought it. For a movie that has no A B or C list actors, I thought it was great.

The mockumentary style of presenting 'How to get down' was well played. You can't take the movie seriously or you will be disappointed, it's not a real guide. Enjoy the fun at pokes at this lifestyle, and it might help if you are / were someone who parties, so that you can relate to the movie. People really are like this.

A Joking, But True, Look at Partying
gavin694211 August 2009
This film offers a humorous, yet informational, guide for men and women on how to meet members of the opposite sex. Such things covered include parties, clubs, drugs and different signs that might be misinterpreted. The plot, if there is one, is very thin.

I instantly loved this film. Another reviewer said it's not funny just because it's true. And that's a valid point, not everything true is funny and not everything funny is true. But in this case, it is both funny and true. And that is what makes it really hit home -- if you've ever been a guy (I can't speak for the ladies) in a social situation, this more or less sums up exactly what your evening is going to be like.

There are a series of experiments presented by some scientist guys... these parts are not generally as funny, but break up the sections nicely. Also, there is a fair amount of hotness and some nudity, which is what you're going to want if you're watching a film about "getting down". If you're not into partying and never have been, you may not relate, but otherwise this is a must-see.

Go & Get Down
thesar-210 January 2009
Disclosure: I don't use drugs (Okay, fine, alcohol/cigarettes, but specifically referring to the pot/cocaine in the film) and after watching 'The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down,' I'm curious to see if this is just a comedic guide to using, or what actually occurs. And curious enough only to learn about the latter. Having less exposure to the (fill in the blank) guide shorts of decades past, and more on the guides examined/ridiculed on 'MST3k,' I thought this movie was hilarious. I loved the fact it didn't do a straight up remake of the guide films, but it showed one long night of partying and how to conduct yourself. Sort of a spoof off of one of my favorite films, 'Go,' 'Boys and Girls' explored everything from getting to the hot/not spots, what to do when partying, uh, getting down, and how to make your exit. Years past since I hit these types of scenes/clubs, and since I never was a user, I was so oblivious to drug usage, someone could've been doing a line in front of me, and I would've probably asked them why they just didn't put their sugar in their tea instead of their nose. So, it just leads me to wonder… how much of the movie is true. (Yes, I am stating my – happily – ignorance.) Either way, it's a hilarious effort, original and hopefully, most people won't be taking it seriously enough to use this as their 'guide.'

Great, fun, real, refreshing
sunsetcookie30 March 2007
This film has been referred to as the newest cult classic -- maybe. It is cool, it is fun and it is, most of all, REAL. Yeh, that probably describes a cult classic. What I liked about it is that it was fun and the entire theater laughed one scene after another - in unison and spontaneously. I mean, I could not stop laughing and the fact that others were laughing with me was major fun.

This movie just Rocks. The character, Andy, in green visor and basketball shirt is really very good. And the other dudes are also all good -- I mean really good. Frankly I was surprised how together this film was. I expected an okay little indie film but this blew me away cause it was actually all pulled together. The acting was all good, the photography work was precise and there and the writing was witty and real. Sometimes gems happen.

All the guys on this shoot have a shot. I think we will see them all again and again. It reminded me of "The rat pack" flick. Go see this -- you'll really like it and follow this crew -- they are really all going places!

the people who say it wasn't good, haven't REALLY partied, great movie
evoalex19 August 2008
just finished watching B&G's guide... awesome movie. I've seen myself in so many of those scenarios in real life... and people who say this only happens in L.A. haven't lived in Las Vegas, because living here in Vegas is this movie time and time again. Your talking about the number one party city in the world. This stuff happens on a daily basis over here. Back to the movie though, great movie and explained the scene great. Loved the house party scenes. I would give an A to the director, especially for being one of his first films... If you haven't seen this movie i definitely suggest going to go watch it, especially if your in the party scene.

The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down Rocks!
larimie10 March 2007
If you haven't seen "The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down", you must check it out when it comes out in theaters!! This independent movie is hysterical and innovative. It's writing is fantastic. It was written and directed by Paul Sapiano.

Definitely a breath of fresh air at the movies, especially when it comes to comedies. The movie is a satire on Los Angeles nightlife and the hipsters in Cahuenga scene. Its ensemble cast is stellar, they create memorable characters that take you through the "dos" and "don'ts" of partying in LA. The movie is set up into chapters and like a guide is supported by some killer graphics. There are also a group of scientist that help us understand the scientific side of "getting down", why things really work the way they do.

If you like to party and want to learn from the best... how to get free drinks, get into clubs, buy drugs, get laid, then this is the flick for you! Have some beers and smoke and go enjoy this movie with friends! It will be in theaters March 23!

The Boys & Girls Guide to The Worst Movie Ever Made
marshreed9 November 2007
I would rather eat my own vomit than watch one more minute of this dreck.

IMDb's automated Editor warns that I must include ten lines of text without adding unnecessary padding or else my privileges will be suspended. I do not think this movie deserves any more than two lines. So please do not take my slightly extended review as any indication that this movie warrants any attention whatsoever.

The Boys & Girls guide is a movie about the do's and don'ts of partying. If Swingers is the Rolls Royce of the genre, The Boys & Girls Guide is a rusty tricycle accidentally dredged from the Hudson River by a bass fisherman.

Holy abysmal, Batman. Negative like 26 stars. Was this a practical joke? Come on guys, where's the hidden camera?

The one clear message that this movie gives
tsannasardo13 September 2008
I have to say, this movie was one of the most real independent films I have ever seen. It gives you the reality of nightlife, with every detail spelled out into slightly confusing concepts. While most are pretty clear, the events and situations are either extremely realistic, or just blown WAYYYYY out of proportion. This movie gives us many messages, and tips to improve your haggard lifestyle, but you're too dumb to get most of them, get this one. Posers listen to FERRY CORSTEN, women are B-i-tches, and drugs are the way to seduce any woman into having wild, unprotected sex with you.

The end.

Like a Traffic School Movie for Party Goers
cj-12321 October 2008
Seriously, every college student/random young adult, planning on coming to party in South Beach ( or LA or NYC ) should view this film. It's a serious look at the party " do and don't " list.

Basic party manners and how to avoid the pitfalls of everyone not wanting you to come to the next party are contained.

View it with the same mind that had to sit through the stupid movies in traffic school. It's not meant to be anything but a guide. I don't think the characters were supposed to evolve. They set out with basic characters that the viewer could identify with ( at least one of them for each viewer ). They put them in a party situation and allowed each to stay in that environment with the aide of the guide.

If you're viewing hoping to get an academy award performance from a virtually unknown cast of party peeps in LA - you're out of luck. If you'd like to go and party like a rock-star, take notes. Nothing worse in a party than someone who has no class or party savvy.

You either are or know that person. Very true movie.

Warning: Spoilers
I just stumbled across this movie last night and wow! Some might bash this movie as a rip-off of Swingers but it is FAR from it. I live in Dallas and it's pretty much like it is in the movie here. The reason I like it so much is that I know the "Fiend", "Dealer", "Girl or Guy who will not shut up", etc. The going to the bar and having some girl try to get you to buy her a drink or the cheese ball guy hitting on every girl is very true. Going to the after hours party (Uptown, Addisson, Oaklawn, Lakewood Etc.) but never had to worry about Mr.Belding. See it with an open mind and if you do go out and partake in any of the activities you will say "my god what am I doing"!??

My favorite "Documentary"
uberlefty3 November 2018
This is a very unique film. It never takes itself too seriously yet it does divulge some honest and true information all the way through. It is filled with great humor and some mediocre acting, but overall, a very enjoyable movie. It starts rough, but once it gets to the first voice over after the first set of characters are introduced, it never stops being informafunny. You might learn a thing or two, or just laugh, either way, it should be enjoyable.

Full of giggles.
k_mas25 October 2009
So far I haven't seen a movie like this. A movie that is funny and maintaining originality at the same time. Have you seen a movie like this? I don't think so.

I watched this before I turned the ripe old age to legally drink and party, and let's just say that without this movie, I would definitely be the girl crying on the steps and I'm a guy.

Despite the full frontal nudity of illicit drugs, it deserves a kudos because of its gonad kicking ability to society by showing the true fact that these things happen in life. The movie title itself is basically what the movie is all about, 'getting down'. It isn't meant to offend people, it isn't meant to encourage people. Its soul purpose (in my opinion) is to say "Don't turn the blind eye because this s*** goes down at parties".

I wouldn't go to far to say that this is the way of life. I'm just trying to say that this movie does capture that wild side and puts it on the big screen and shows you angels what it's like on the other side.

Honest, Funny, Entertaining
lolligag628 December 2010
Most people have remained unsure about the nature of this film, about whether it is intended to be serious or parodical, intended as a satire of partying, or advice of how to do so. I believe that is because it isn't firmly either of these things. Just as in the partying it illustrates, you should never try to take it seriously, or figure out what it is that lays at the core; this movie doesn't have a firm plot line, or a truly serious face when it comes to doling out advice. However, it is very entertaining. The movie has some ridiculous situations, but I'm sure most people can say that more ridiculous things have happened. It takes a very casual attitude towards drugs, but at the same time makes it clear that drugs can be, and often are abused. This movie offers a fairly honest look at what happens in the "partying scene" in all its hijinks and inglory. In the end, you will most likely either come away with a strong reaction to this movie, be it positive or negative. It is obviously intended for younger audiences, and on a personal note, I recommend being as chemically influenced as the people in the film when you watch it. (In some way, you feel more "in" the movie, more in touch with the film's "spirit" as it were)
