Calvin Coolidge was the thirtieth president of the United States, serving in the White House from 1923 to 1929. He oversaw one of the greatest periods of prosperity in American history and reduced the federal budget even as the economy grew. Amity Shlaes (editor) is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Coolidge, The Forgotten Man, The Greedy Hand, and, most recently, Great Society. She chairs the board of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation. Matthew Denhart (editor) serves as president of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation.

A Man of a Different Era

Calvin Coolidge is one of those "nondescript" presidents who most of us don't know much about. If anything, we have read bits of trivia. He was sworn in by his father in his parents' kitchen when President Harding died. His teenage son died of blood poisoning shortly after he became president. He had a reputation for being a very quiet man - earning him the nickname "Silent Cal." Certainly not a riveting page turner, but definitely an insight into the personality of a man who dedicated his life to public service. His intelligence, patriotism, and even sense of humor radiate from every page. American life and the logistics of government in Washington nearly one hundred years ago are yet another fascinating aspect of this book. It truly was a different day and age. An informative read!

Superbly edited book which was already excellent in its original form. Shlaes is well-versed in Mr. Coolidge's life and, thus, contributes a deep frame of reference to this task. If only President Coolidge had lived a longer life that would've helped us to see our way through the dark days of the Roosevelt presidency. Sigh....
